Easy Fence Posts and Hanging a Fence Gate: A Practical DIY Guide

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a fence opening that stays square and swings freely, set the posts plumb, brace them before the concrete goes in, and hang the gate while it is supported at its finished height. “Door” in this project means a fence gate; the available installation guidance does not cover an interior or exterior house door.

Use the dimensions and curing times supplied for your particular fence, gate hardware, soil and concrete product. The figures below come from different systems and are not interchangeable engineering rules.

Confirm the gate system before you dig

A gate carries more leverage than a straight run of fence. A sagging or binding gate is often the result of the wrong post, an incorrect opening, or hardware installed before the posts were stable. Identify the gate material and model, then obtain its installation sheet before laying out holes.

Verify the opening and clearances

Measure the gate leaf, the required side clearances, the hinge-side and latch-side gaps, and the height needed for the gate to clear the finished ground. Manufacturer instructions may define the distance between posts rather than the gate leaf width. Measure from the surfaces the hardware will actually use, not from an assumed centerline.

Choose the correct gate post

Some systems use a reinforced gate post that is different from an ordinary line post. The SimTek installation guide, for example, specifies a gate-post arrangement and spacing for its own system. Do not substitute a standard post simply because it has the same outside dimensions. A loaded gate can twist an undersized post or pull it out of alignment.

Call before you excavate

Contact 811 before digging so local utility companies can mark underground lines. Mark the fence line and the proposed gate opening on the ground, and check local rules for property lines, easements, drainage and frost-related depth requirements.

Tools and materials

  • Post-hole digger or a two-person auger; a powered auger can make a larger project faster, but it still requires hand checking and cleanup.
  • Tape measure, string line, stakes and a marker for the post centers.
  • Two-way level, temporary braces and stakes to hold each post.
  • Gravel for the base of each hole.
  • Concrete selected for the post and the site, mixed or placed exactly as its label directs.
  • The specified gate posts, hinges, hinge bolts or screws, latch and any reinforcement required by the gate manufacturer.
  • Blocks or another stable platform to support the gate while the hinges are positioned.
  • Drill and bits that match the approved fasteners, plus wrenches and basic protective equipment.

Size and prepare each post hole

Hole size depends on the post, soil and gate system. QUIKRETE’s general “Setting Posts in Concrete” guidance describes a hole about three times the post width and a depth equal to one-third to one-half of the above-ground post length, plus 6 inches. It also recommends a tube form where soil is loose or sandy. Treat those values as that manufacturer’s general method, not a universal structural specification.

A system guide can require something quite different. The SimTek guide calls for a 10-to-12-inch-diameter hole, 30 to 36 inches deep, for its referenced gate installation, along with its own post spacing and a 48-to-72-hour concrete cure. Those dimensions apply to that system only.

Guidance Hole recommendation Timing or limitation
QUIKRETE general post-setting instructions Width about three times the post width; depth one-third to one-half of above-ground post length plus 6 inches Use the product directions; a tube form is recommended for loose or sandy soil
SimTek referenced gate system 10–12 inches in diameter and 30–36 inches deep System-specific spacing; concrete cure stated as 48–72 hours

Remove loose soil from the bottom and keep the sides as vertical as practical. Place and compact the recommended gravel base before lowering the post. A clean, firm base helps the post sit at the planned elevation and gives water a path away from the bottom in systems that call for one.

Set and brace the posts in concrete

  1. Mark the post centers. Transfer the measured opening to stakes, allowing for the hinge and latch clearances specified by the gate manufacturer. Recheck the diagonal or corner-to-corner measurements so the opening is not skewed.
  2. Dig both holes before final placement. Keep excavated soil away from the opening so it cannot fall back into the concrete. If the gate system calls for different holes for hinge and latch posts, label them.
  3. Add the gravel base. Place the stated amount and compact it. Set the post on the base or at the manufacturer’s specified elevation.
  4. Install temporary braces. Fasten braces to stakes on two adjacent sides of the post. Leave enough room to adjust the post while concrete is being placed.
  5. Check plumb in two directions. QUIKRETE’s instruction is: “Use a level to position the post plumb (perfectly vertical), checking on two adjacent sides with the level, then fasten the braces to the stakes.” Check again after every major addition of concrete.
  6. Place the concrete. Use the selected mix according to its water, mixing and placement directions. Work around the post so there are no large voids, but do not disturb the post or allow the braces to loosen.
  7. Recheck alignment. Confirm the post is still on its mark, plumb on both faces and at the correct height. Adjust while the concrete remains workable, then secure the braces firmly.
  8. Finish the top. Slope or cap the exposed concrete as the system directs so water does not collect against the post. Keep concrete off hinge faces and threaded hardware.
  9. Repeat for the second post. Use a string line and a measurement between posts to keep the opening true. Do not rely on sight alone; a small error at the posts becomes a large error at the latch.

Allow the concrete to gain strength

“Fast-setting” does not mean immediately load-ready. QUIKRETE’s separate fast-setting instructions say the mix sets hard in 20 to 40 minutes and recommend waiting about four hours before constructing a fence or applying heavy weight to a post. Those times are product guidance and vary with formulation, temperature, moisture and the load.

The SimTek guide gives a 48-to-72-hour cure for its referenced gate system. Follow the longer or more specific requirement when the gate manufacturer states one. Keep braces in place until the specified period has passed and the concrete is firm enough to resist movement. If weather is cold, very hot or wet, consult the product label rather than assuming the shortest stated time.

Hang the gate without loading the posts

Support the gate at its finished elevation

Place solid blocks or a purpose-built support under the gate so its bottom gap and top line match the final installation. The support must carry the gate’s weight while you position the hinges; do not ask the hinge bolts or a partially cured post to hold the leaf during layout.

Lay out the hinges

Position the hinges as far apart as the gate and post allow, within the manufacturer’s limits. A wide vertical separation reduces twisting in the hinge-side post. Hold each hinge leaf flush and plumb against its mounting surface. If a leaf is tilted or proud of the surface, the hinge can bind as the gate moves.

  1. Rest the gate on the blocks at the planned height and close it into the opening.
  2. Hold the hinge-side leaf in its intended position and mark every approved fastener hole.
  3. Install the upper and lower hinge hardware loosely enough for adjustment, but keep the gate supported.
  4. Check that both hinge pins or pivots are aligned on one vertical axis.
  5. Tighten the hardware in stages, alternating between hinges so the gate does not climb or twist.
  6. Remove the temporary support only after the hardware is tight and the gate remains at the correct height.

Chain-link gate considerations

For a chain-link gate, support the gate on blocks while aligning the hinge pieces on the gate frame and posts. Open and close it several times before final tightening. If the pieces bind, check their alignment rather than forcing the gate; a small angular mismatch can make the hinge seize.

Livestock-gate offset

Virginia Tech Extension notes a context-specific issue for livestock gates: hinges placed directly in line with the fence can bind and limit the opening, while a slight offset can let the gate rest against the fence. This is a livestock-movement design consideration, not a universal hinge dimension. Use the offset only when it suits the gate, animals and manufacturer’s hardware.

Install and adjust the latch

Do not drill the latch holes until the gate swings correctly. With the gate closed, set the latch components so they meet without lifting, dragging or pushing the gate sideways. Leave the gate supported while marking if the concrete cure is incomplete. Use only fasteners approved for the post and gate material; over-tightening can crush thin tubing or distort a hinge plate.

Test the latch from both sides if the design permits. Confirm that the closed gate has the intended gap from the ground, fence and latch post, and that the latch cannot release from normal vibration or contact. Add a stop if the system calls for one, but do not let a stop carry a misaligned gate’s weight.

Test the complete opening

  • Swing the gate slowly through its full intended arc. It should move freely without rubbing the ground, posts or fence fabric.
  • Open and close it repeatedly at normal speed. Watch for the hinge side rising, dropping or shifting as the load transfers.
  • Check the latch with the gate both gently pushed and gently pulled. It should engage without force.
  • Inspect braces, exposed concrete and fasteners after the first test cycle. Stop and correct movement before putting the gate into service.
  • For a double gate, verify that the leaves meet at the center and that the drop rod or center latch reaches its receiver without binding.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Correction
Gate rubs the ground near the latch Hinge posts are out of plumb, the gate was unsupported during installation, or the opening is not level Recheck post plumb and hinge-axis alignment. Adjust hardware only within its designed range; do not force a cured post.
Gate binds before it reaches the latch Hinge leaves are not flush or the hinge pieces are misaligned Loosen, realign and retighten while the gate is supported. Chain-link hinges require particular attention to the mating pieces.
Latch misses its receiver Post spacing or latch height was measured from the wrong reference surface Measure the actual closed position, then reposition the latch within the hardware’s adjustment range.
Hinge-side post moves Insufficient hole size, unsuitable post, disturbed concrete or loading before cure Stop using the gate. Keep the post braced and consult the gate and concrete instructions; a failed post may require removal and resetting.
Concrete remains soft Incorrect water ratio, low temperature, excess water or insufficient cure time Do not load the post. Follow the product’s remedy or contact the manufacturer before adding weight.

Safety and long-term checks

Wear eye protection when digging, cutting or mixing concrete, and keep helpers clear of a suspended gate. Never enter an unmarked excavation area. A two-person lift is appropriate for a heavy gate; use mechanical assistance when its weight or size makes control uncertain.

After the first week of use, inspect hinge fasteners, latch engagement, post movement and the concrete surface. Recheck after seasonal ground movement or a storm. Tighten only to the hardware manufacturer’s specification, and replace bent or elongated parts rather than compensating with excessive force.

The reliable sequence is straightforward: confirm the gate system, call 811, measure the opening, dig to the applicable instructions, brace and plumb both posts, respect the concrete cure, support the gate while aligning widely spaced hinges, then test swing and latch before declaring the job finished.
