Washington, D.C.’s Earth Day bike tour was announced as a free, two-hour ride on April 22, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. ET. The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and Toole Design organized it, with Jennifer Toole, FASLA, AICP, president of Toole Design, as tour leader. The event was intended to show how bikeway design affects the rider experience and why fitting safe, useful facilities into existing city streets involves difficult trade-offs.
That date has passed. The announcement does not establish current registration, a later tour date, an exact route, or a tour-specific safety result. Its value for residents, planners and construction professionals is the design question it raised: Washington’s bicycle network is not one uniform facility. Protected lanes, painted lanes, multi-use trails, signed routes and shared streets provide different levels of separation, continuity and comfort.

What the 2026 Earth Day bike tour covered
ASLA and Toole Design described the ride as a practical look at the complexity of building bikeways on urban streets. The stated subjects were climate action, safety, health and well-being, and equitable access to sustainable transportation and recreation. Those are the event’s purposes and framing; they are not independent measurements showing that a particular project caused a safety or health improvement.

Because no route was published, it is not possible to say which corridors, intersections or facility types the group actually visited. It would also be wrong to infer that participation demonstrated a safety improvement. A future event would need to publish its route, operating conditions and evaluation method before those claims could be tested.
Why bikeway design is a resilience issue
A bicycle facility is part of a street’s physical infrastructure, not merely a painted symbol. Designers and builders must allocate limited width among moving traffic, bicycles, pedestrians, transit, loading, parking, drainage, utilities and emergency access. A choice that makes one section comfortable can create a difficult merge, turn or delivery conflict at the next block.
Safety depends on the whole trip
Riders experience a route as a chain of links. A protected segment that ends abruptly, a trail crossing without a clear connection, or a lane that disappears at an intersection can determine whether a journey feels predictable. Evaluating only a single block can therefore miss the condition that matters most to a person traveling from home to work, school or a recreation area.
Resilience includes more than crash prevention
The event’s reference to climate action and sustainable transportation points to a broader goal: giving people a dependable alternative for some trips. A connected network can also provide access to recreation and daily destinations for people who do not drive. The announcement did not quantify emissions, health outcomes or equity effects, so those benefits should be treated as planning objectives rather than measured results of this tour.

Construction decisions shape user experience
For a construction team, the rider’s experience is affected by details such as barrier placement, surface quality, drainage, sight lines, transitions and the order in which work is staged. Temporary closures and detours can be as consequential as the finished design. A resilient project plan therefore considers how people will move during construction and how the completed facility will be maintained.
What “bike infrastructure” means in Washington, D.C.
DDOT’s 2021 Washington, DC Bicycle Map distinguishes several facility categories. They differ in physical separation, whether they are on or off the roadway, who uses them and how directly they connect to destinations. The map should not be read as evidence that every route is protected.
| Facility type | Separation and setting | What a rider should expect | Planning question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protected bike lane (cycle track) | An exclusive bicycle facility in or next to a roadway, physically separated from motor traffic. Barriers can include parked cars, bollards or raised curbs. | More separation from moving vehicles than a painted lane, but crossings, driveways and intersections still require attention. | Where does the physical protection continue, and how are turns and crossings handled? |
| Ordinary bike lane | Roadway space designated with striping, signs and pavement markings rather than a physical barrier. | Riders remain in the roadway environment and may encounter turning, parking or loading activity. | Are markings current, continuous and visible, and what happens at junctions? |
| Off-street or multi-use trail | A route separate from the roadway, generally shared by several user groups. | Walkers, runners, rollers and bicyclists may be present, so speed, passing and crossings matter. | Does the trail connect directly to the destination and provide a safe street crossing? |
| Signed route | A designated bicycle route identified by signs; the map does not treat the sign itself as physical separation. | Comfort and traffic conditions can vary from block to block. | What other facility appears on each segment of the signed route? |
| Shared lane | Bicycles and motor vehicles use the same lane, with signs or markings indicating the expected operation. | Riders must account for vehicle speed, width and turning movements. | Is the route appropriate for the rider’s comfort and ability, especially at busy times? |
| Contraflow lane | A bicycle movement traveling opposite the general motor-vehicle direction on a one-way street, as identified on the map. | Drivers and riders may be looking in different directions than usual. | Are signs, signals and crossing points clear in both directions? |
The map also identifies trail access points, bike-share locations, parking and repair resources. Those supporting features can determine whether a route is practical for a daily trip, not just technically available.
Are there bike trails in Washington, D.C.?
Yes. DDOT’s Trails Program describes an “equitable, connected, and low-stress trail network” intended for bicyclists alongside rollers, walkers and runners. The program page gives a headline figure of 67 miles of multi-use trails, attributed to DDOT on a page accessed in 2026, and says the agency plans to build more than 10 additional miles over six years.

The same page displays 62 miles in another section. Because the page contains both figures, 67 miles is best treated as the headline number rather than a precisely reconciled inventory. Trail mileage and planned additions can change as projects open, are redesigned or are counted differently.
Multi-use does not mean conflict-free. A rider should expect people walking, running or using rollers, especially near popular access points. The low-stress description expresses the program’s goal; it does not guarantee identical conditions on every mile or at every crossing.
How to plan a Washington, D.C. bike route
Use the facility categories and current conditions together. An older map or an app’s suggested line can omit construction, a closure or a changed intersection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Start with DDOT’s Washington, DC Bicycle Map. Identify the route’s facility type segment by segment instead of labeling the entire trip “protected.” Note trail access points, bike-share, parking and repair locations if they affect your trip.
- Check the connections. Look at where a protected lane ends, where a trail meets a street and where a signed or shared route begins. Pay particular attention to turns, crossings and entrances to destinations.
- Use a route planner as a suggestion, not a guarantee. DDOT lists online bike route-planning services but cautions that those services are private and that the agency gives no warranty of their accuracy or completeness.
- Verify conditions before leaving. Check current construction notices, closures, detours, weather and operating conditions. A route that was comfortable when mapped may be different during utility work, paving or event traffic.
- Match the route to the rider. Consider experience, traffic comfort, surface type, distance, hills, trail sharing and the time of day. The shortest route is not automatically the lowest-stress route.
- Plan equipment and a fallback. Carry water, a charged phone and a way to address a flat tire. Know where you can safely stop if a facility is blocked or conditions change.
What the available safety evidence does—and does not—show
DDOT’s Bicycle Program page reports an average of 265 bicycle crashes and 600 pedestrian crashes reported to the Metropolitan Police Department each year. The page does not state the year range or enough methodology to interpret those figures as a current 2026 trend. They should not be used to claim that one facility, project or tour caused the numbers.

DDOT says its safety work includes the regional Street Smart education and enforcement campaign and school safety classes with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. The agency also says children under 16 are required by law to wear helmets and describes helmet-fitting support for children. The cited information does not establish an adult helmet requirement for the Earth Day ride.
A properly fitted helmet is still a sensible preparation choice, particularly for young riders. It is separate from the question of whether a lane or trail design reduces risk, which requires facility-specific and properly dated evaluation.

Design separation where it solves a documented conflict
Vertical protection can reduce exposure to moving traffic, but barriers must be placed with visibility, drainage, maintenance and access in mind. A protected lane that blocks a needed loading operation or creates a blind turning condition may simply move the conflict. The right question is not whether a project uses a barrier, but how the barrier works through intersections, driveways and work zones.

Build continuity, not isolated showcase segments
Network value comes from useful connections. During design review, trace a person’s entire trip and identify every change in facility type. Construction schedules should preserve legible temporary routes where possible and clearly communicate any unavoidable detour.

Account for every user on multi-use trails
Trails serving walkers, runners, rollers and bicyclists need clear entrances, sight lines and space for passing. Their success should be judged by how different users share the route, not only by the number of miles opened.
Make maintenance part of the design
Striping, signs, curbs, bollards, pavement and lighting all deteriorate or become obscured. A resilient plan assigns responsibility for inspection, repair and snow, debris or vegetation management. Without that commitment, the map can show a facility that no longer operates as intended.
Measure outcomes with transparent dates and methods
Crash counts, travel patterns and user surveys are meaningful only when their time period, geography and collection method are clear. The DDOT averages cited above illustrate why a number without a stated year range should not be presented as a current trend.

Check the organizer’s current notice for the date, registration status, meeting location, route, pace, accessibility information and weather policy. Ask whether the ride is on streets, trails or a mixture, and whether riders must provide their own bicycle and equipment. Confirm current closures immediately before setting out, because neither an older map nor a private route planner guarantees present conditions.
The 2026 announcement supports a useful way to examine Washington’s streets: follow the route as a sequence of design decisions, observe where separation changes, and ask how construction, maintenance and access affect each person using the corridor. It does not, by itself, certify a route as safe or prove a specific infrastructure outcome.
