The Viking E-32T Series is a hands-free SIP IP intercom that calls programmed destinations over a VoIP phone system and can operate an access-control relay. Choose the standard E-32T-SS-IP for protected indoor locations; choose the E-32T-SS-IP-EWP when the station can face precipitation or condensation. Security depends on how TLS, SIPS and secure RTP are configured with the organization’s SIP server, not on the presence of a “secure” label alone.

What the E-32T Series does

Viking describes the E-32T Series as IP intercoms for SIP VoIP phone systems. In practical terms, the station is a networked SIP endpoint: pressing its blue backlit button starts a hands-free call to one or more programmed destinations, while the receiving party can speak with the visitor and, where the installation permits, release a door or gate.

The E-32T can store programmable call numbers and cycle through backup numbers when the first destination is busy or does not answer. That behavior is useful at unmanned entrances, loading areas and service gates because an unanswered desk phone does not have to be the end of the call sequence. Status indication shows dialing and answered-call states at the station.

Programming is performed through a browser-based Web UI, and the manual documents downloadable firmware. Initial installation and SIP provisioning require a network administrator or IT technician. The intercom must be treated as part of the organization’s telephony and access-control infrastructure rather than as a standalone analog door phone.

Viking’s product description calls the series “designed to provide reliable and secure voice communication for SIP VoIP phone systems.” That is a manufacturer statement. It is not a published independent field-test result or a third-party security certification, so a project specification should separate the vendor’s design claim from acceptance testing performed at the customer’s site.

How SIP security works in practice

TLS protects SIP signaling

The manual lists SIP transport over TLS. TLS protects the SIP control exchange used to register the endpoint, establish calls and communicate signaling information while the traffic is in transit. It does not, by itself, prove that the voice media is encrypted end to end.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SIPS and secure RTP protect a complete call

The manual distinguishes SIPS from ordinary SIP over TLS. For fully encrypted calls, it instructs the installer to select SIPS and enable secure RTP, then make sure the SIP server or service provider uses the correct port. A deployment therefore needs matching settings on the E-32T, the PBX or hosted SIP service, and the network path between them. If the server does not support the selected secure transport and media method, registration or calls can fail.

Do not describe every E-32T call as automatically encrypted merely because TLS appears in a feature list. Ask the network administrator to confirm which signaling transport is active, whether SIPS is required, whether secure RTP is negotiated for the media stream, and which server-side ports and certificates or policies apply. Record the approved settings as part of the site’s telephony configuration.

A commissioning checklist for secure deployment

  1. Confirm the SIP service. Verify that the PBX or provider supports the E-32T account type, SIP 2.0 behavior and the intended secure signaling and media options.
  2. Assign network service. Provide the Ethernet connection and Class 2 PoE budget, then apply the organization’s normal addressing, VLAN and firewall policy. The network administrator should document the intercom’s address and account identity.
  3. Open the Web UI. From an authorized maintenance workstation, use the browser-based interface to enter the SIP account, registrar or server information, programmable destinations and backup sequence.
  4. Set transport deliberately. Select the signaling option approved by the PBX or provider. If the project requires fully encrypted calls, select SIPS and enable secure RTP as instructed in the manual, using the server’s required port.
  5. Test both ends. Place calls to the primary and backup destinations, check that audio works in both directions, and verify that the receiving system reports the expected secure signaling and media state.
  6. Protect administration. Limit Web UI access to authorized administrators, change any default credentials supplied during commissioning, and keep a controlled record of firmware and configuration changes.

Choosing between the two models

The central buying decision is environmental exposure. Both identified models provide the same basic SIP intercom function, but the EWP suffix identifies the weather-protected version.

Model Best fit Environmental qualification Mounting and planning notes
E-32T-SS-IP Protected indoor or otherwise sheltered installations Standard product listing: 5–95% relative humidity, non-condensing Flush-mount in a standard double-gang electrical box or use the optional VE-5×5 surface-mount box
E-32T-SS-IP-EWP Locations exposed to precipitation or condensation Viking states EWP products are designed to meet IP66; the listing allows up to 100% humidity Confirm enclosure, cable-entry and mounting details for the actual exposed location before specifying

IP66 in this context is Viking’s design specification, not an independently reported test result. Exposure decisions should account for driving rain, wash-down, condensation, shelter overhangs and the way the intercom is mounted. A sheltered wall can still experience wind-driven water, while a covered entrance can produce condensation when temperatures change.

Specifications that affect a construction or security design

The following figures are manufacturer specifications in Viking’s manual dated April 9, 2026. They should be checked against the current installation documentation and the project’s electrical and access-control requirements.

Item Published specification Why it matters
Network power PoE Class 2; less than 6.5 W Confirm that the switch or injector can supply the required PoE class and that the site’s power budget includes every connected device.
Voice codecs G.711u, G.711a and G.722 Check that the PBX or provider permits at least one codec in common with the intercom.
Relay 2 A Use the rating when coordinating a door strike, gate controller or other access device; verify the load type and required interface with the installer.
Maximum sound-pressure rating 90 dB SPL at 1 m Use it as a product rating when considering ambient noise and listener distance, not as a guarantee of intelligibility at every site.
Operating temperature −40°F to 140°F (−40°C to 60°C) Compare the range with the actual location, including solar heating inside a surface box or vestibule.
Dimensions 5 × 5 × 2.25 in (127 × 127 × 57 mm) Check wall depth, box fit, clearance and finish details before rough-in.
Networking and protocol Ethernet; SIP 2.0 (RFC 3261) Plan for a compatible SIP account and a managed network connection.

Mounting, power and access-control planning

Flush or surface mounting

The station flush-mounts in a standard double-gang electrical box. Where the wall cannot accept a recessed box, Viking lists the optional VE-5×5 surface-mount box. Confirm the box’s suitability for the selected model and the wall construction before ordering. On a new build, coordinate the box, conduit, cable bend radius and finished-surface thickness with the electrical and security trades.

PoE and network cabling

One Ethernet connection supplies network service and PoE when the switch or injector supports Class 2 power. Have the network team reserve the required switch capacity, place the device in the intended security segment and document how maintenance access will be provided. A link light or PoE draw alone does not prove that the SIP account is registered; registration and test calls must be checked in the Web UI and PBX logs.

Relay and optional accessories

The onboard relay can activate a door strike or gate controller, subject to the relay’s 2 A rating and the access device’s voltage, current, inductive-load and fail-safe requirements. Do not connect an unknown lock load directly. The installer should determine whether an isolation device, suppression component or separate power supply is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Viking also lists an optional RC-4A network relay for remote relay control and an SL-2 strobe-light option. Those accessories can change wiring, power and control arrangements, so confirm current compatibility and installation requirements before including them in a bill of materials.

Installation and commissioning sequence

  1. Survey the entrance. Identify weather exposure, condensation risk, ambient noise, visitor approach, listener distance and the access device to be controlled. Select the standard model only where the location is adequately protected; use the EWP model when precipitation or condensation is expected.
  2. Verify dimensions and rough-in. Confirm the double-gang box or VE-5×5 surface box, finished wall depth and the position of the button and status indicators. Keep the microphone and speaker clear of obstructions.
  3. Prepare the network. Confirm an Ethernet run, Class 2 PoE availability, switch-port policy and the SIP service details. The IT administrator should approve addressing, firewall rules and administrative access before the unit is connected.
  4. Install the station. Mount the intercom according to the current Viking instructions, terminate the network cable, and connect the relay to the access-control interface only after the electrical ratings have been checked.
  5. Program the endpoint. Browse to the device’s Web UI, enter the SIP credentials and server settings, set the primary destination and add backup numbers for busy or unanswered conditions.
  6. Apply the approved security profile. Configure TLS or SIPS as required by the PBX or provider. For fully encrypted calls, enable secure RTP and use the server’s required port. Avoid changing server-side security settings without the telephony administrator.
  7. Run functional tests. Press the button repeatedly under normal and busy conditions, verify the backup sequence, confirm hands-free audio and observe dialing and answered-call indications. Test the relay with the door or gate in a controlled state.
  8. Document handover. Record the model, firmware version, network identity, SIP destination sequence, relay interface, approved security settings and the date of acceptance testing. Store credentials securely rather than in an exposed commissioning sheet.

Compatibility questions to settle before purchase

SIP 2.0 compliance and RFC 3261 support are useful starting points, but they do not guarantee compatibility with every PBX or hosted provider. Ask the telephony supplier to confirm that the service accepts this endpoint, the chosen codecs and the required TLS, SIPS and secure-RTP combination. Verify how the provider handles registration, inbound callbacks, certificate policy and non-answer failover.

Codec planning matters when bandwidth or legacy equipment is involved. The E-32T lists G.711u, G.711a and G.722; the PBX must offer a compatible choice. If the system and endpoint have no codec in common, a successful network connection will not produce usable audio.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The button produces no call

  • Check PoE delivery and the Ethernet link at the switch.
  • Confirm that the SIP account is registered in the Web UI or PBX records.
  • Review the programmed destination for a transcription error and test the backup sequence separately.
  • Ask the administrator to verify that the PBX permits the endpoint to place calls.

The call connects but audio is missing or one-way

  • Check that the PBX and E-32T have a codec in common.
  • Review the provider’s media and firewall policy with the network administrator.
  • Confirm that secure RTP settings match on both sides when encrypted media is required.
  • Test again from a known-good destination before changing multiple variables.

SIPS or secure RTP will not register

  • Confirm that the server or provider supports the selected secure mode and required port.
  • Check the server-side certificate or security policy with the telephony administrator.
  • Temporarily compare the configured transport with the provider’s documented endpoint profile; do not leave a less-secure mode enabled when the project requires encrypted service.

The relay does not release the door or gate

  • Verify the access controller’s voltage and current against the relay interface and 2 A rating.
  • Check whether the controller expects a dry contact, a powered output or an isolated interface.
  • Test the relay independently of the lock and have the access-control installer inspect wiring and suppression components.

An outdoor station shows moisture problems

  • Confirm that the installed model is the EWP version when precipitation or condensation is possible.
  • Inspect the mounting surface, cable entry and box for paths that can direct water toward the unit.
  • Compare the location’s temperature and humidity conditions with the published ratings and correct the installation rather than assuming an IP66 design claim makes every mounting arrangement weatherproof.

Maintenance and change control

Keep the intercom’s firmware current according to Viking’s documentation and the organization’s change-control process. Before updating, export or record the active SIP and relay configuration, schedule a maintenance window and arrange a rollback plan with the network administrator. After an update, repeat registration, secure-media, audio, destination-failover and access-control tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the call destinations whenever staffing, reception hours or emergency procedures change. For exposed stations, include the faceplate, mounting box, cable entry and surrounding seal condition in routine site inspections. Any change to the PBX, SIP provider, firewall, VLAN or access controller should trigger a focused intercom test rather than relying on the fact that the device still has power.

A practical specification decision

  • Specify E-32T-SS-IP when the station is indoors or reliably sheltered from precipitation and condensation, and the standard humidity range fits the site.
  • Specify E-32T-SS-IP-EWP when the entrance can experience rain, wash-down, wind-driven moisture or condensation. Treat the IP66 statement as Viking’s product specification and still detail the mounting and cable-entry method.
  • Require IT sign-off for the SIP account, PBX/provider compatibility, PoE capacity, network placement and encryption settings.
  • Require security-installer sign-off for the relay, door or gate interface, optional accessories and life-safety implications.
  • Make acceptance testing explicit: call setup, backup numbers, two-way audio, SIPS and secure RTP status where required, relay operation and environmental installation checks should all be recorded.

The E-32T Series is therefore best understood as a configurable SIP endpoint for controlled voice entry, not a plug-and-play guarantee of secure communications. Model selection follows exposure; dependable operation follows correct PoE, network and SIP planning; and encrypted calls follow matching SIPS and secure-RTP settings on the intercom and the supporting phone system.
