Dyson’s PencilWash is a separate wet-and-dry hard-floor cleaner inspired by the slim design of the PencilVac—not a wet-cleaning attachment or conversion for the existing vacuum. Dyson announced it on February 19, 2026, with U.S. availability beginning March 17 at a launch price of $349. The Dyson U.S. product page later showed a temporary $249.99 price, reduced from $349.99; check the live product page for the current price.
What the PencilWash is—and is not
The Dyson PencilWash applies the company’s “pencil-thin” design philosophy to wet floor cleaning. It is designed for collecting wet spills and dry debris from compatible hard floors in the same pass.

Its relationship with the PencilVac is primarily visual and ergonomic. The two products use a similar slim, cylindrical design language, but they are separate machines with different cleaning systems. PencilVac is a dry vacuum family; PencilWash is a dedicated wet-and-dry hard-floor cleaner. Dyson has not presented PencilWash as a wet roller that PencilVac owners can add to their existing machine.

That distinction matters. PencilWash is not a carpet vacuum, and it should not be treated as a universal replacement for a cordless stick vacuum. Its appeal is the attempt to make a traditionally bulky floor washer easier to steer, store, and grab for everyday hard-floor messes.

How Dyson says it cleans
PencilWash uses a dense microfiber roller rather than a conventional dry-vacuum head. According to Dyson, the cleaning process works as follows:
- Clean water is delivered to the roller through an eight-point hydration system.
- The microfiber roller contacts the floor, loosening stains and collecting wet and dry debris.
- As the roller rotates, dirty water and debris are continuously extracted into the waste system.
- The waste is contained in the machine’s cassette or tray instead of being redistributed across the floor.
Dyson says the roller has 64,000 microfiber filaments per square centimeter and is supplied with fresh water throughout its rotation. That describes the machine’s hydration and extraction design; it is not a promise that the cleaner sterilizes floors or eliminates all microorganisms.
There are two hydration settings. The lower setting is intended for lighter messes and routine cleaning, while the higher setting is meant for more persistent spills or stains. Dyson does not publish detailed water-flow rates for the two modes in the launch material.

The weight figures need careful reading. The cleaner weighs approximately 4.9 pounds fully assembled; 0.84 pounds is Dyson’s stated in-hand figure, not the total weight you lift and store.
Dyson’s marketing pages round some specifications differently, displaying approximately 1.4 inches for the handle and about 0.83 pounds in hand. The figures above use the more detailed U.S. press-release specifications. Dyson’s claims that PencilWash is especially slim or lightweight should also be understood as company claims based on specified comparisons, not as an independent industry-wide test.

What floors can it clean?
Dyson lists PencilWash for hard floors including:
- Tile
- Vinyl
- Laminate
- Marble
- Sealed wood
“Sealed” is the important qualification. Before using a wet cleaner on wood, stone, laminate, or another moisture-sensitive surface, follow the flooring manufacturer’s care instructions. A suitable machine cannot make an unsealed or water-sensitive floor safe to saturate.
The advantage—and compromise—of the slim format
Maneuverability and storage
The PencilWash’s narrow body, low stated in-hand weight, and 170-degree maximum recline are intended to make it easier to steer around furniture and reach beneath low pieces. The compact shape may be particularly useful in apartments, smaller kitchens, and homes with limited closet space.

That is the central proposition: PencilWash prioritizes accessibility and maneuverability rather than the largest tanks or the longest uninterrupted cleaning session.
Small tanks
The 10-fluid-ounce clean-water tank is notably small for a wet floor cleaner. It helps preserve the slim profile, but it can mean refilling during a larger whole-home session. Dyson’s “up to 1,076 square feet” coverage figure comes from a low-hydration simulation and can vary with the selected setting, floor type, mess, and cleaning routine. It should be treated as a controlled estimate, not a guaranteed area per charge or per tank.
The 12-fluid-ounce dirty-water tank also does not guarantee that a session will finish without emptying. A heavy spill or particularly dirty floor can fill the waste container sooner.

Runtime
Up to 30 minutes may be adequate for daily maintenance in a smaller hard-floor home, but the 3.5-hour charge time makes PencilWash less suited to repeated long cleaning sessions. “Up to” figures depend on operating conditions and should not be interpreted as a universal continuous runtime.
Maintenance is part of ownership
A wet cleaner is not a use-and-forget appliance. The current U.S. user guide instructs owners to remove the cassette containing the roller, clean-water tank, and waste tray. Before use, the guide says to fill the clean-water tank to the MAX line, hydrate the roller under running water, squeeze out excess liquid, and reinstall it. If using cleaning solution, it specifies 10 ml of the appropriate solution or non-foaming detergent.
After cleaning, owners should follow the manual’s current instructions for emptying, rinsing, cleaning, and drying the roller, cassette, tank, and waste components. A filter-free waste system does not mean maintenance-free ownership. A damp roller or dirty waste tray left unattended can still develop an unpleasant odor.
Cleaning solution: what to use
PencilWash can be used with water, while Dyson also markets its separately sold Dyson 02 Probiotic hard floor cleaning solution for wet-and-dry cleaners. The company describes it as non-foaming and formulated for floor cleaning.
Do not casually substitute a generic detergent. Foam, excess solution, or chemicals unsuitable for the machine or floor could cause operating problems or damage the surface. Use only the amount and type permitted by the current manual, and also follow the flooring manufacturer’s cleaning guidance.

A household that already owns a PencilVac should not assume it can gain wet-cleaning capability by buying a PencilWash head. They are different products. Some homes may want both: one for dry vacuuming and one for wet hard-floor cleaning. Others may be better served by a more versatile vacuum paired with a conventional mop.
Who should buy it?
PencilWash is most compelling for people who:
- Have mostly or entirely compatible hard floors.
- Deal with frequent kitchen, bathroom, or pet-related wet spills.
- Want a lighter-feeling cleaner for quick daily maintenance.
- Need to reach under low furniture.
- Have limited storage space.
- Value compactness more than tank capacity.
A larger wet cleaner is likely a better choice for large homes, uninterrupted whole-home sessions, or shoppers who prioritize fewer refills. Dyson’s broader wet-floor lineup includes products such as the Clean+Wash Hygiene and WashG1, although availability and specifications vary by market.
Skip PencilWash if you need one appliance for carpets, upholstery, stairs, and hard floors; if you dislike washing and drying wet-cleaner components; or if you expect it to replace a high-performance carpet-capable vacuum.
Price and availability
Dyson announced a U.S. launch price of $349 on February 19, 2026, with availability beginning March 17. That is a dated promotion, not a permanent MSRP; pricing, stock, and included items can change.
Verdict
Dyson has not made the PencilVac wet. It has created a separate wet-cleaning sibling that borrows the PencilVac’s slim, lightweight design idea and applies it to a microfiber roller, water tanks, and waste extraction.
PencilWash makes the most sense when maneuverability, compact storage, and quick hard-floor spill cleanup matter more than large capacity or all-surface versatility. Its small tanks, limited runtime, premium pricing, and required post-use maintenance are the trade-offs for that unusually compact format.
