A Dutchman wood repair replaces a damaged or missing section with a shaped wood insert, rather than covering the defect with filler. It is useful when decay or damage is too extensive for a surface repair, provided you can cut back to sound wood and make a secure, well-fitted patch. The repair should match the surrounding profile, with the patch grain running parallel to the original.
What is a Dutchman wood repair?
A Dutchman is a piece of wood shaped to fit a recess cut into a damaged wood component. The repair removes defective material—and enough additional material to expose sound wood for bonding—then fills the opening with the fitted insert. Once secured, the patch is trimmed or sanded flush and refinished.
Unlike filler, which fills a limited hole or depression, a Dutchman restores missing wood with wood. That makes it especially useful when the repair needs to reproduce a trim profile or when a larger cavity needs a substantial replacement section.
When should you use a Dutchman instead of filler?
Choose based on the extent and depth of the damage, the condition of the wood around it, and how closely the repair needs to restore the original profile and appearance.

- Tips for mixing colors: You can mix the desired wood filler color according to the color chart. When mixing colors, first add the lighter repair filler, then gradually add the darker wood repair filler, observing the color changes until you achieve the desired shade
- Consider filler for a limited hole, depression, or void where the surrounding wood is sound and a fitted insert is unnecessary.
- Consider a Dutchman when a larger or deteriorated section needs to be removed and replaced, or when restoring the wood profile is important.
- Do not bridge unsound wood. The insert needs a clean bonding surface in sound material; if decay extends beyond the visible defect, remove enough to reach that sound wood.
Size cutoffs in construction specifications are project-specific, not universal rules. For example, one New York State Office of General Services specification uses filler for holes smaller than 1 × 1 × 1/2 inch and Dutchman repairs for holes at least that size. Another directs Dutchman repairs for deteriorated, split, or missing wood larger than 1 × 1 × 1/2 inch, while reserving patch compound for limited depressions and voids. How to make a Dutchman repair
- Remove the damaged wood. Cut out defective material and continue into sound wood so the insert will bond to a clean, regular recess. Shape the opening with square corners and edges where the component and repair allow.
- Prepare matching patch wood. Select wood suited to the part being repaired. Plan the insert so its exposed face restores the original profile and its grain runs parallel to the surrounding wood grain.
- Cut and dry-fit the insert. Shape the patch to the opening and test the fit before applying adhesive. Adjust it with a chisel or sanding block until it sits tightly and correctly; avoid forcing a patch that could damage the surrounding wood.
- Apply suitable adhesive and hold the patch. Use an adhesive appropriate to the repair conditions and follow its product directions. The OGS specification calls for waterproof adhesive and clamping until set. Depending on the shape and access, a clamp or masking tape may hold the piece; a protective caul can help prevent a clamp from marking a finished surface. The This Old House rot-repair guide describes Dutchman repair as an option when rot has consumed too much wood for epoxy repair to be practical. For wooden-boat restoration, the WEST SYSTEM manual describes bonding a Dutchman with epoxy. These are application-specific approaches, not a single adhesive rule for every repair.
- Finish the surface. After the adhesive sets, trim or sand the insert flush with the surrounding wood. Refinish the repaired area to suit the existing surface.
Tools and materials to have ready
- Patch wood appropriate to the piece being repaired
- Wood chisel and utility knife for careful shaping and cleanup
- Router, if appropriate for making a regular recess
- Block sander for fitting and smoothing
- Suitable adhesive and a clamp, or masking tape where appropriate
- A protective caul if clamping against a finished surface

What affects the result?
- Sound bonding surfaces: A tight-looking patch will not compensate for decayed wood left underneath or along the edges.
- Fit and grain direction: A close fit and grain aligned with the original help the insert follow the existing wood’s appearance and profile.
- Adhesive and clamping: Match the adhesive to the application and keep the patch stable for the full setting time specified by the product.
- Finish matching: Even a well-shaped insert may remain visible if its wood species, grain, color, or finish differs from the surrounding piece.
Specifications and project guides support the basic method, but the correct wood, adhesive, and finish depend on the component and its exposure. A boat repair, an exterior trim repair, and an interior woodwork repair may call for different product choices.
