Lynn Camp Elementary School in Corbin, Kentucky, replaced a failing roof section with a Duro-Last membrane assembly designed to retain the blue, standing-seam appearance. The project addressed leaks and mold-damaged ceiling tiles while giving administrators a shorter reported construction schedule than the case study’s projection for a comparable metal-roof replacement.
The Lynn Camp roof problem was disrupting school operations
Building Design + Construction reported the Lynn Camp Elementary School project on March 21, 2017. The school’s roof problems were not merely cosmetic: leaks were producing moldy ceiling tiles and interrupting normal school activities. Anthony Pennington, identified in the case study as principal of Lynn Camp Schools, described the effect on students, teachers and learning.

Administrators were looking for two outcomes at the same time. They needed a roof system that stopped the active problems, and they wanted the finished roof to retain the school’s blue color and the visual character of its existing standing-seam metal roof. Pennington’s comments, as reported, also emphasized the desire for a contemporary appearance that would continue to look good over time. The case study quotes the project urgency directly: “Time was of the essence for this project”.

Because the source presents these as project figures, they should not be used to estimate labor, material quantities or duration for another school. Roof geometry, occupied-building constraints, weather, substrate condition, inspections and local requirements can materially change a future scope.
What the retrofit assembly contained
The case study identifies a layered assembly rather than a single sheet of roofing. The listed products were Duro-Fleece, Duro-Tuff and Duro-Last membranes; Vinyl Ribs; Duro-Guard EPS Flute Fill Combo and ISO HD insulation; Duro-Guard DensDeck cover boards; EXCEPTIONAL Metals accessories and edge details; Duro-Grip CR-20 adhesive; and Duro-Caulk Advanced.

The described build-up began with Duro-Guard EPS Flute Fill Combo as a base. Duro-Guard ISO HD insulation and DensDeck cover boards followed. A 50-mil Duro-Fleece membrane was then adhered with Duro-Grip CR-20 adhesive. Vinyl Ribs were heat welded to the adhered membrane to create the raised-line appearance associated with a standing-seam roof.
How to read that sequence
- Base and insulation layers: The EPS Flute Fill Combo and ISO HD products formed the underlying roof build-up described by the case study.
- Cover board: DensDeck was specified above the insulation layers in the reported assembly.
- Membrane: The 50-mil Duro-Fleece sheet supplied the exposed waterproofing layer in the described system.
- Adhesive attachment: Duro-Grip CR-20 was used to adhere the membrane rather than relying on the Vinyl Ribs to hold the sheet in place.
- Visual ribs: Vinyl Ribs were heat welded to the adhered membrane, allowing a membrane roof to mimic the lines of standing-seam metal.
- Perimeter and detailing: EXCEPTIONAL Metals accessories and edge details, together with Duro-Caulk Advanced, were among the listed components for completing roof edges and related details.
The source does not publish thicknesses or attachment patterns for every insulation layer, wind-uplift values, fire classifications, drainage calculations, warranty terms or current product specifications. Those items must be confirmed in a project-specific design and the manufacturer’s current documentation rather than inferred from this 2017 case study.

How the reported installation sequence solved the school’s two priorities
1. Build over the existing roof conditions
The project was a retrofit of a large school roof, not a generic new-construction example. A contractor would first need to verify the existing assembly, locate wet areas and determine whether the substrate can support the proposed build-up. The case study establishes the products and sequence used at Lynn Camp, but it does not describe every preparation step, tear-off decision or moisture survey. Those decisions remain site-specific.
2. Install the insulation and cover-board package
The reported assembly placed EPS Flute Fill Combo, ISO HD insulation and DensDeck cover boards beneath the membrane. In practical planning terms, this stage is where a designer coordinates tapered or flute-fill areas, transitions, penetrations and the condition of the supporting deck. The published account confirms the component order, but it does not provide thermal calculations or a before-and-after energy analysis.
3. Adhere the 50-mil membrane
Duro-Fleece 50 mil was adhered with Duro-Grip CR-20. Adhesive coverage, sequencing, laps, perimeter restraint and substrate cleanliness are installation controls that should come from the approved project details. The case study identifies the adhesive and membrane used; it does not report field pull tests, laboratory results or independent performance measurements.
4. Heat-weld the Vinyl Ribs
Vinyl Ribs were heat welded to the adhered membrane. This step supplied the blue standing-seam-style lines the school wanted without replacing the roof with conventional metal panels. Rib layout, alignment at ridges and valleys, and coordination around rooftop equipment would be part of the shop-drawing and quality-control process, although those drawings are not included in the published account.

5. Complete edges and penetrations
Edge details and accessories from EXCEPTIONAL Metals, along with Duro-Caulk Advanced, were listed among the project products. Edges, drains, curbs, pipe penetrations and transitions are common leak-sensitive locations on any roof. The case study does not provide detail drawings, so an owner should require those details, inspection points and acceptance criteria in the contract documents.
Why schedule was a decisive selection criterion
The case study says a metal roof of this size was projected to require 9–12 months, while JBK Roofing president Brandon Keck reported that the Duro-Last project took 90 days. Both statements are estimates or reported project-duration figures tied to this specific case; neither is a guarantee for another building.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a school, a shorter schedule can reduce the time that classrooms, corridors and activities are exposed to construction noise, weather protection measures and interior disruption. It can also simplify coordination with the academic calendar. Those advantages depend on a realistic phasing plan: temporary protection, daily cleanup, safe access routes, material staging, inspections and a response plan for rain or high winds all affect whether a target schedule is achievable.
The source does not provide a schedule breakdown, crew size, weather log, permit dates or a direct comparison of actual metal-roof and membrane-roof costs. An owner considering a similar approach should request a milestone schedule showing deck repairs, insulation, cover board, membrane, rib installation, edge work, testing and punch-list completion as separate activities.

How the project preserved the standing-seam appearance
Appearance was not an afterthought at Lynn Camp. The school wanted to retain its blue color and the visual language of the existing standing-seam roof. The Vinyl Rib treatment addressed that requirement by adding welded raised lines over the adhered membrane. In other words, the system used a membrane waterproofing approach while reproducing the rhythm of metal seams that was important to the building’s identity.
Color matching and visual review should be handled before ordering materials. An owner should approve a sample or mock-up that shows rib spacing, edge transitions, flashing color and how the new work meets roof areas that remain. The case study confirms the intended look and reported result, but it does not publish a color code, reflectance value, rib spacing or photographs with measurable dimensions.

| Question | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Did the system address an active school-roof problem? | The case study reports leaks, moldy ceiling tiles and disruption to school activities before the work. | It does not publish a post-installation leak-rate measurement or a multi-year maintenance record. |
| Could the roof retain a standing-seam look? | The selected blue membrane-and-Vinyl-Rib approach was intended to preserve that appearance, and the case study says it delivered the desired look. | No independent visual assessment, color specification or aging study is supplied. |
| Was the project completed quickly? | JBK Roofing’s president reported a 90-day completion for Lynn Camp. | The source does not establish that 90 days is typical, nor does it provide a detailed critical path. |
| Was it cheaper over the roof’s life? | No lifecycle-cost conclusion is reported. | There is no independent cost comparison, payback calculation or maintenance-cost history. |
| How did it perform technically? | The source lists the assembly and products used. | It provides no independent wind, fire, thermal, durability or warranty comparison. |
This distinction matters when a school board evaluates the project as a precedent. The case study is useful evidence of one installation’s scope, appearance goal and reported schedule. It is not a statistically representative performance study.
A practical decision framework for another school
- Document the existing roof. Map leaks, wet insulation, corrosion, penetrations, drains, expansion joints and areas that must remain in service. Record interior damage so repairs can be verified after the roof work.
- Define the appearance requirement. Specify the desired blue color, rib pattern, transitions to existing roof areas and acceptable visibility from the ground. Require a mock-up before full installation.
- Compare systems on the same scope. Ask each bidder to price demolition or overlay work, deck repairs, insulation, cover board, membrane, ribs, edge metals, flashings, testing, permits, protection and interior restoration. A product-only comparison can hide major scope differences.
- Set a school-safe phasing plan. Identify work zones, protected entrances, noise limits, student movement, emergency access, weather contingencies and dates when classrooms or athletic spaces cannot be disturbed.
- Require current technical documents. Confirm that the proposed products, adhesives, accessories and details are current and compatible. The 2017 case study should not substitute for today’s manufacturer instructions.
- Define quality checks. Put substrate acceptance, adhesive application, membrane seams, rib welds, edge details, drains, penetrations and final water-intrusion checks into the inspection plan.
- Separate reported results from guarantees. Treat the Lynn Camp schedule and appearance outcome as a reference point. Require the contractor to state assumptions and provide a schedule supported by crew, access and weather planning for the new site.
Questions to ask the roofing team before approving a similar retrofit
- Which portions of the existing roof will be removed, and which will remain beneath the new assembly?
- How will wet insulation, corroded metal and damaged deck areas be located and priced?
- What current detail drawings govern membrane laps, rib welds, curbs, drains and perimeter edges?
- How will the school remain protected during rain, wind and overnight shutdowns?
- What inspections or tests will document that seams, ribs and penetrations are complete?
- What warranty is offered for workmanship and materials, and what maintenance is required?
- Which schedule activities are weather-sensitive, and what recovery plan applies if they slip?
- How will the finished blue color and standing-seam visual pattern be approved?
Bottom line for facility owners
The Lynn Camp Elementary School case shows why a commercial roof decision can turn on more than waterproofing alone. The school needed to stop disruptive leaks, preserve a recognizable blue standing-seam appearance and limit the duration of work on an occupied campus. The reported Duro-Last assembly combined insulation and cover boards with an adhered membrane and heat-welded Vinyl Ribs to meet those stated goals, while the contractor reported a 90-day completion against a 9–12-month projection for a metal roof of that size.
Use the project as a design and planning example, not as a promise of price, lifespan or schedule. A current roof investigation, engineered details, comparable bids, school-specific phasing and documented acceptance tests are what determine whether the same approach is appropriate for another building.
