The next step depends on that distinction. Dudley provides combination-retrieval instructions for eligible serialized locks and reset instructions for two named models, but does not publish one mechanical fix for every lock.
Start by identifying the lock and the symptom
Find the model number, usually on the lock or its packaging, and describe the problem precisely. A forgotten combination is different from a dial that physically will not turn or a shackle that will not release. Also note whether the lock is attached to a locker, cabinet, or other fixture; the official combination-retrieval options require an unattached lock.
- Forgotten combination: use Dudley’s official retrieval process if the lock is eligible and serialized.
- Reset needed: use instructions only if they name your exact model.
- Mechanical sticking or failure to relatch: the published Dudley guidance does not specify a universal repair. Contact support before attempting a repair or arranging a return.
If you forgot the combination
Dudley says combination retrieval requires the lock’s serial number, and records may be available only for the last 10 years. The serial number is engraved on the bottom of the lock, except on models DY1525 and DYA400K, where it is on the back. Check the current Dudley Questions & Support page for the applicable process.
Dudley describes two ways to request a combination for an eligible serialized lock:

- Take the unattached lock to a Master Lock distributor or retailer. They can contact Master Lock on your behalf and validate ownership.
- Submit a notarized Lost Combination Form. Dudley estimates this route may take approximately 4–6 weeks.
Dudley says combinations are no longer provided in response to phone, fax, or email requests. Its support page lists customer service at 1-800-227-9599 for questions, but that is not a route to request the combination directly.
If the lock needs a reset
Reset instructions are model-specific. Dudley’s support page links instructions for the Claw Mini (DYBP1AST) and Cyclone (DYCL51AST). Those instructions do not establish a reset method for other Dudley models. Confirm the model number and use only the matching PDF linked from Dudley’s support page; do not force a reset method from another lock.

If the dial, shackle, or relatching mechanism is stuck
Dudley’s published support guidance does not give a general mechanical fix for a dial that will not turn, a shackle that will not release, or a lock that will not relatch. Avoid treating combination-retrieval or reset instructions as a repair procedure. Contact Dudley support with the model number, serial number if present, a description of the symptom, and whether the lock is attached. The support page advises customers with a potentially defective lock to verify warranty status before shipping it; defective locks must be returned prepaid.
Check warranty coverage before returning or replacing it
Dudley’s official pages use different warranty language. The general Questions & Support page says, “We offer a limited lifetime warranty on all dudley products.” The separate school-administration Support Services page says serialized locks have a two-year warranty. Because those statements differ in scope, ask support to confirm coverage for your exact model and purchase context before sending the lock. The general support page lists 1-800-227-9599.

When replacement makes sense
Consider replacement only after support confirms the existing lock is defective or it cannot be recovered through the applicable official process. Match the replacement to its use and physical fit: Dudley describes combination padlocks for lockers, equipment storage, and cabinets. Some school or facility settings may require a particular key-control or administration system, so check those requirements before choosing a model.
