Drill-guided joinery is most useful when the guide makes a repeatable hole pattern for the joint you need. Pocket-hole joinery uses an angled, stepped hole and a compatible screw to pull two pieces together; dowel joinery uses matching holes and pins to align and connect them. Choose between them based on the joint’s appearance, layout, stock, alignment demands, and the tools available—not on a universal claim that one is stronger.
How pocket-hole joinery works
A pocket-hole jig guides a stepped drill bit at an angle through one workpiece. The bit forms a pocket for the screw head and a pilot path into the adjoining piece. A compatible screw then draws the pieces together. The pocket is part of the finished joint: place it out of sight, plug it, or accept it as visible.
Setup depends on the specific jig and stock. Follow that model’s instructions for material thickness, bit depth, screw selection, and hole placement. Kreg’s guidance calls for securing the workpiece, starting the drill slowly, and checking the depth setting. Kreg also advises keeping holes at least 2 inches from an edge to reduce splitting risk; that is its guidance, not a universal spacing rule. See Kreg’s pocket-hole jig instructions.
Use the jig’s own capacity and settings
The Kreg K4 is one example, not a specification for all pocket-hole jigs. Kreg lists it for stock from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches thick, adjustable in 1/8-inch increments. Its listed components include a three-hole guide, stepped bit, and stop collar, and it is compatible with Kreg pocket-hole screws and plugs. Check the Kreg K4 product specifications for that model’s details.

How dowel joinery works
A dowel joint connects two pieces through corresponding holes and inserted dowels. The holes must line up: even a small mismatch can keep the pieces from fitting together. A doweling jig helps guide the drill, while a consistent reference face helps keep hole locations aligned from one workpiece to the other.
Make matching holes reliably
- Mark hole locations carefully and register both pieces from the same reference face where the layout allows.
- Use a self-centering doweling jig or another suitable guide to keep the bit square and repeatable.
- For edge- or end-grain holes, WOOD Magazine recommends a sharp brad-point bit, which is less likely than a twist bit to wander or twist off course.
- Set a stop collar so hole depth is consistent. Dowel centers can transfer hole positions from one piece to its mate.
WOOD Magazine’s dowel-joint guidance covers marking, drilling depth, and transferring locations. A self-centering jig with an indexing pin can also help make a repeated series of holes; the JessEm doweling jig listing describes use for edge-to-edge joints, carcass corners, shelves, and aprons.

Spacing depends on the joint
There is no single spacing rule for every dowel joint. In a 2025 update, WOOD Magazine reported Jim Lindsay of O.M.S. Tool Co. advising roughly 10-inch spacing for most edge joints. The article notes that dowels in edge-glued boards often help align the surfaces more than reinforce the joint. Treat that spacing as context for those edge joints, not a rule for corners, aprons, or other layouts. See WOOD Magazine’s doweling rules Q&A.
Pocket-hole and dowel joints compared
| Consideration | Pocket-hole joint | Dowel joint |
|---|---|---|
| How it joins | An angled pocket and compatible screw draw the workpieces together. | Matching holes receive dowels that align and connect the workpieces. |
| Visible result | The pocket must be hidden, plugged, or left visible. | Dowels can be hidden or made an exposed design detail. |
| Main accuracy concern | Correct jig setting, bit depth, stock setting, and clamping. | Accurate alignment and depth of the mating holes. |
| Typical tools | Pocket-hole jig, stepped bit, and compatible screws; plugs are optional. | Doweling jig, suitable drill bit, dowels, and optionally dowel centers. |
| Setup emphasis | Guided screw assembly using settings matched to the stock and jig. | Careful transfer and drilling of matching holes. |
Choose a method for the joint you are building
- Choose pocket holes when a screw-driven assembly suits the layout and you can put the pocket where its visibility is acceptable. Confirm the jig accommodates the stock and follow its settings for the bit and screw.
- Choose dowels when you want a hidden connection or an intentional exposed-dowel detail and can accurately align the holes. A jig, shared reference face, and depth control reduce setup errors.
- Compare the actual joint, not just the method name. Stock thickness, joint geometry, appearance, alignment tolerance, and clamping all affect which setup is practical. The sources cited here do not provide a neutral, directly comparable strength test, so they do not establish a general strength winner.
What to make of speed claims
Castle describes a low-angle pocket system with 6° pockets and router-cut pockets for composite material. The company says its assembly times are 60% to 70% faster than traditional joinery methods. That figure is Castle’s manufacturer claim; it is not an independently established result for pocket-hole joinery generally. Details are on Castle’s pocket-cutter page.
