Dreame’s Cyber X Robot Vacuum Concept Has Terrifying Legs That Climb Full-Size Stairs

Dreame’s Cyber X is a tracked stair-climbing carrier for a robot vacuum, demonstrated at CES 2026. It is not yet a retail product and may transport—not clean—the stairs.

Dreame’s Cyber X is a working research prototype designed to carry a robot vacuum up and down full-size stairs. It uses four articulated supports containing rubber tracks, rather than walking feet. Engadget observed the machine climb and descend a staircase at Dreame’s booth during CES 2026, but the concept remains a prototype with no confirmed price, release date, or retail listing.

What Dreame’s Cyber X actually is

Cyber X looks like a conventional robot vacuum mounted on a set of mechanical legs. Mechanically, however, it is better understood as a tracked stair-climbing carrier for a separate robot vacuum.

The cleaning robot docks inside the larger chassis. Four supports fold around it, and rubber treads provide the climbing motion. The treads move horizontally against the stair edges, making the system more like a compact tracked vehicle than a robot walking upstairs on individual feet.

Dreame previewed the concept at IFA in Berlin before showing it at CES 2026. The design addresses one of the biggest limitations of today’s robot vacuums: most can map and clean only one floor unless the owner carries them between levels.

Engadget’s CES report describes the docked-vacuum and tracked-carrier arrangement and uses the company’s “Bionic QuadTrack” terminology.

It really did climb a staircase—but only in a demonstration

This was not merely a computer rendering or a promised future feature. Engadget reported watching Cyber X climb and descend a flight of stairs during a live demonstration at Dreame’s CES booth in January 2026.

That is meaningful evidence that the mechanism can perform a controlled stair climb. It is not the same as independent testing across different homes, stair materials, landings, or failure conditions. A trade-show staircase may be clean, dry, correctly sized, and selected specifically for the prototype.

How high can it climb?

Dreame reportedly claims that Cyber X can handle:

  • Risers up to 25 centimetres (9.8 inches)
  • Slopes up to 42 degrees
  • Approximately 27 seconds per flight
  • Straight and curved staircases

These are company-reported prototype specifications, not universal guarantees. A staircase’s riser height is only one part of the compatibility question. Performance would also depend on tread depth, stair width, traction, surface condition, and the dimensions and weight of the docked vacuum.

Open-riser stairs, tight switchbacks, intermediate landings, banisters, walls, carpet, dust, moisture, and loose objects could all affect whether the carrier can climb reliably. Dreame has not publicly detailed the complete geometry limits in the available coverage.

Does Cyber X clean the stairs?

Probably not in the way many people will assume. The available demonstration and reporting indicate that Cyber X’s primary job is to transport the robot vacuum between floors. The actual cleaning robot sits inside the stair-climbing carrier, rather than independently driving across each stair tread.

Once delivered to another floor, the vacuum could potentially resume cleaning there. But climbing a staircase does not mean the system automatically vacuums or mops every step. Engadget likewise treated stair cleaning as unlikely from the demonstrated configuration.

The docked vacuum is reported to have mopping hardware and a water tank, but that does not establish that the treads themselves are cleaned. Users would still need a separate solution for stair surfaces unless Dreame develops a dedicated stair-cleaning mode or attachment.

What happens if the battery runs out?

Cyber X reportedly includes a braking system intended to keep it stable on floors and stairs, including when its battery is depleted. That feature is essential for a device carrying a costly vacuum above a hard floor.

It should nevertheless be treated as a reported safety feature, not proof that the machine is safe in every failure scenario. The available information does not establish its load rating, redundancy, independent safety certification, manual retrieval process, or behaviour after a sensor, track, or navigation failure.

A consumer version would need to answer practical questions such as whether it can stop on a stair, lock its tracks mechanically, alert the owner, and be safely removed without forcing someone to reach into a precarious position.

Why the concept is important for multi-storey homes

For a two-storey home, one robot vacuum normally creates a choice: buy separate cleaners for each floor or carry one machine upstairs. Cyber X is an attempt to solve that logistical problem automatically.

The same idea could be relevant in larger homes, hotels, offices, care facilities, and other buildings where cleaning equipment must move between levels. One compatible vacuum could, in principle, serve several floors without requiring staff or occupants to carry it.

The benefit is therefore not that Cyber X has suddenly become a better stair scrubber. Its more significant innovation is floor-to-floor transport.

Why it is not the same as Dreame’s current X60 robots

Dreame already sells robot vacuums that can cross raised thresholds and small steps, but those machines cannot replace a stair-climbing carrier.

The official US product page for the Dreame X60 Ultra lists obstacle crossing of up to 3.47 inches (8.8 cm) for a double-layer step and a listed single-layer step limit of 1.77 inches (4.5 cm). The page showed a price of $1,499.99 during the research period, although shop promotions can change.

The X60 Max Ultra Complete likewise lists up to 3.47 inches (8.8 cm) of obstacle crossing. Its product page showed $1,614.99 against a displayed $1,699.99 list price during the same period.

Machine What it is designed to do Stair implication
Cyber X Carry a compatible robot vacuum between floors Designed around full-size stair climbing; prototype only
X60 Ultra Clean floors and cross thresholds or low steps Not a normal-flight stair climber
X60 Max Ultra Complete Clean floors with enhanced obstacle crossing Not a normal-flight stair climber

In other words, the X60 models handle transitions within a floor. Cyber X is intended to handle the much larger problem of moving from one floor to another.

The unanswered engineering questions

Before a stair-climbing carrier could become a practical household product, Dreame would need to clarify several points:

  • Which robot-vacuum models can dock inside the carrier?
  • Can the carrier autonomously load, secure, release, and unload the vacuum?
  • What are the minimum stair width and tread-depth requirements?
  • Can it handle landings, switchbacks, and sharply curved stairs?
  • Does it work on carpet, polished wood, wet surfaces, or dusty steps?
  • How much clearance does it need at the top and bottom of a staircase?
  • What happens if an object enters a track path or a sensor loses the stair edge?
  • Can an owner manually release or retrieve it after a fault?
  • How does it manage multiple floors and return to the correct dock?
  • What safety certifications, warranty coverage, and service arrangements would apply?

The tracks, folding joints, brakes, sensors, and articulated supports also add mechanical complexity compared with a conventional wheeled robot. That could mean more noise, wear, maintenance, and potential failure points.

Can you buy Cyber X?

No—not based on the currently confirmed information. Cyber X is a research prototype, not an announced consumer product. Dreame has not confirmed a retail launch date, price, preorder route, warranty, or replacement-parts programme.

Readers should be cautious of any listing that presents Cyber X as available for purchase without a verifiable official Dreame product page. The company’s official US shop lists retail robot vacuums, but Cyber X should not be treated as one of them.

What you can buy now

If your problem is a threshold, raised doorway, or small step rather than a complete staircase, an X60 model may be relevant. If you need a robot vacuum to travel automatically between floors, neither the X60 Ultra nor the X60 Max Ultra Complete is a substitute for Cyber X.

For a multi-storey home today, the dependable options remain carrying a robot vacuum manually, placing a separate vacuum on each floor, or using a conventional handheld or upright cleaner for the stairs. Cyber X shows what an eventual automated solution might look like, but it does not yet provide a product buyers can plan around.

Bottom line

Dreame’s Cyber X is a credible and unusual CES 2026 prototype: a tracked carrier that was demonstrated climbing and descending a full-size staircase while carrying a robot vacuum. Dreame’s reported limits—25-centimetre risers, 42-degree slopes, and roughly 27 seconds per flight—suggest a serious attempt to solve multi-floor robot-vacuum use.

But the mechanism is primarily for transport, not proof that the machine cleans stair treads. Its stair compatibility, safety systems, maintenance needs, vacuum compatibility, and commercial future remain unresolved. For now, Cyber X is an impressive engineering demonstration—not a consumer vacuum you can buy.
