A queen measures 60 × 80 inches, adding 6 inches of width and 5 inches of length. A full can suit one sleeper or a smaller bedroom; a queen is often the more practical starting point for two adults or a taller sleeper. The right choice depends on the people using it and the room available.
Double vs. queen bed sizes at a glance
These are standard US mattress dimensions—not the outside measurements of the bed frame. Nominal surface areas below are calculated from the listed width and length.

The queen adds 750 square inches of nominal mattress area. Actual product measurements can vary slightly, so use the dimensions listed for the specific mattress and frame when checking fit. Sleep Foundation’s full-size guide and queen-size guide provide the standard US measurements.
Which size works for your sleepers?
One sleeper
A full offers more width than a twin while taking up less floor space than a queen. It may be a good fit for a solo sleeper, especially in a guest room or smaller bedroom. If you like to spread out, a queen may be worth the larger footprint.

Two adults
A queen is generally the more accommodating choice for two adults. A full is 54 inches wide, so it can feel tight for couples, though comfort depends on body size, sleep habits, and preferences.
A taller sleeper
A queen is 80 inches long, compared with 75 inches for a full. Those extra 5 inches make it a stronger candidate for a taller person, but pillow placement and sleep position also affect how much usable length remains.

Children or pets sharing the bed
The queen’s additional width may help when a child or pet joins the sleepers. If more than two people or pets share the bed regularly, even a queen may not provide enough room; consider whether a larger mattress is practical for both the sleepers and the bedroom.
Will the bed fit the bedroom?
Plan around the complete bed, not just the mattress. Frames extend beyond the mattress dimensions, and bedside furniture, doors, drawers, and walking routes all need room. One practical guide suggests aiming for at least 24 inches of clearance on each side and at the foot where feasible; treat this as a planning target, not a guarantee that every layout will work. - Measure the bedroom, including any alcoves or obstructions that affect where the bed can go.
- Check the frame’s outside dimensions in the product listing, then mark that footprint on the floor with painter’s tape.
- Map the space needed to open doors and drawers, reach nightstands, and walk around the bed.
- Check the route into the room, including stairs, hallways, and tight doorways, before arranging delivery.
Cost, moving, and accessories
Purchase cost
A full generally costs less than a queen of the same mattress model, but the difference depends on the brand and product. There is no reliable like-for-like price figure here to use as a current market estimate, so compare the exact models you are considering.
Moving and delivery
A smaller mattress can be easier to maneuver through stairs and narrow doorways. Check the delivery path as well as the bedroom: the room may fit a queen even when the route to it does not.

Frame, sheets, and mattress depth
Choose a frame and bedding for the exact mattress size. Full and queen are not interchangeable, and fitted-sheet fit also depends on mattress depth. Confirm the mattress measurements, the frame’s interior dimensions, and the depth range stated for sheets or protectors. Rowley Company’s US mattress-size reference is another sizing resource.

- If shopping in the US, check that “double” means a full; size labels and measurements are not uniform worldwide.
- Use the seller’s exact mattress dimensions and the frame’s listed dimensions rather than relying only on the size name.
- Account for furniture, doors, drawers, and usable walking space when deciding whether the larger footprint works.
- Match sheets and protectors to both the mattress size and its depth.
- Consider foreseeable household changes, such as a future partner or child, alongside today’s room space and budget.
- If the fit is uncertain, tape out the bed-frame footprint before buying.
