Double the Fun: Can You Use a Soundbar and TV Speakers at the Same Time?

Some TVs can play their built-in speakers and a soundbar simultaneously, but there is no universal cable trick. Learn which systems support it, how to configure them, and when soundbar-only is better.

Sometimes—but not with every TV or soundbar. Some televisions can play their built-in speakers and an external soundbar simultaneously. Others automatically mute the TV speakers as soon as HDMI, optical, Bluetooth, or headphone output is selected. The most reliable arrangements are manufacturer-designed systems such as Samsung Q-Symphony and LG WOW Orchestra, provided the exact TV and soundbar models are compatible.

Even when simultaneous playback works, it is not automatically better. A small timing difference can create echo, hollow dialogue, flanging, or lip-sync problems. For many households, one properly configured soundbar sounds cleaner than two unsynchronized audio sources.

The short answer

Setup Usually possible? Main condition
Compatible same-brand TV and soundbar Yes, on supported models Q-Symphony, WOW Orchestra, or an equivalent feature
Different-brand TV and soundbar over HDMI ARC/eARC Sometimes The TV must specifically support dual output
TV and soundbar over optical Sometimes The TV must support simultaneous optical output
TV and Bluetooth soundbar Often no Many TVs mute their internal speakers
TV headphone output and soundbar Model-dependent Headphone mode often disables the TV speakers

Before changing cables, check the exact television model’s manual or support page for terms such as simultaneous audio output, dual audio output, TV speaker plus external speaker, or TV speakers and soundbar.

Two different meanings of “use both”

“TV speakers plus soundbar” can describe two very different arrangements:

  • Generic dual output: The television sends the same program audio to its internal speakers and an external soundbar. The two devices may process the signal independently.
  • Synchronized speaker integration: A compatible TV and soundbar are designed to operate as one coordinated front soundstage. Samsung calls this Q-Symphony; LG uses the name WOW Orchestra.

A wireless subwoofer or rear speaker kit does not count as the TV speakers being active; those components are already part of the soundbar system. Similarly, a soundbar’s dedicated center channel is not the same as using the television’s own speakers.

Why the TV model matters

Simultaneous playback depends on the television manufacturer, exact model, model year, operating system, firmware, connection method, audio format, and sometimes the source being played. A feature available for a built-in streaming app may not work with a game console or set-top box.

Sony, for example, documents simultaneous TV-speaker and soundbar output only for particular products and operating systems. Its support guidance also warns that some models cannot play through the built-in speakers and a connected HDMI, Bluetooth, or headphone device at the same time. See Sony’s simultaneous-output guidance and its model limitations.

Do not assume that all Samsung TVs support Q-Symphony or that all LG TVs support WOW Orchestra. Both features require a compatible TV-and-soundbar combination.

Which connection should you use?

HDMI ARC or eARC

HDMI ARC/eARC is normally the best first choice because it can provide TV audio return, HDMI-CEC volume and power control, and better integration with supported soundbar features. eARC also offers more bandwidth than ARC for compatible high-bitrate formats.

  1. Find the TV HDMI port marked ARC or eARC.
  2. Connect it to the soundbar port marked HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC).
  3. Enable HDMI-CEC if the television requires it.
  4. Choose the soundbar, combined-speaker mode, or similarly named option in the TV’s sound settings.

LG’s instructions use the TV’s ARC port and a sound-output selection for the connected soundbar. Samsung likewise recommends connecting compatible soundbars to the television’s ARC/eARC port. Neither ARC nor eARC alone guarantees that the TV speakers will remain active.

  • Stream audio with Bluetooth - Connect your phone or tablet via Bluetooth to fill the room with your favorite music.

Optical digital audio

Optical is useful with older televisions, older soundbars, or systems where HDMI-CEC is unreliable. It can also be part of a manufacturer-specific simultaneous-output arrangement. However, connecting optical does not automatically create dual audio; many TVs mute their speakers when optical output is selected.

For LG televisions, a typical optical path is Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Out → Use Wired Speaker → Optical Out Device, although labels vary by model and software version. See LG’s connection guide.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is usually the least suitable option for combining a soundbar with TV speakers. The television may support only one audio destination, mute its internal speakers, or introduce noticeable latency. Bluetooth volume and audio-format support also vary. Use it only if the TV explicitly supports simultaneous Bluetooth and TV-speaker output and testing confirms acceptable synchronization.

Headphone or analog output

Headphone and analog outputs frequently disable the built-in speakers. Some televisions offer an accessibility or dual-output option, but this is model-specific and should not be treated as a reliable general solution.

How to set up simultaneous sound safely

  1. Verify the exact model. Search the manufacturer’s support site for “simultaneous audio output,” “dual audio,” “TV speaker plus soundbar,” or the relevant branded feature.
  2. Use HDMI ARC/eARC first. Connect the correct ports and enable HDMI-CEC where required.
  3. Open the TV’s sound-output menu. Look for TV Speakers + Soundbar, Combined Speaker, Simultaneous Optical Output, Q-Symphony, WOW Orchestra, or equivalent wording.
  4. Do not confuse “TV Speakers” with a combined mode. If the only choices are TV Speakers and External Speaker, the normal menu may not support both simultaneously.
  5. Update compatible equipment. Install available firmware updates on both the TV and soundbar, then pair them using the manufacturer’s recommended method.
  6. Begin with spoken content. A news broadcast or dialogue-heavy scene reveals echo more clearly than music or action effects.
  7. Start with the soundbar volume low. Increase it gradually; a volume setting of 20 on one device does not equal 20 on the other.
  8. Adjust synchronization. Look for AV Sync, Audio Delay, Lip Sync, Sound Sync, or Advanced Sound. Test small changes in both directions.
  9. Test multiple sources. Check built-in apps, live TV, an HDMI streaming device, a console, ordinary stereo, Dolby Digital, and Atmos content.

Samsung Q-Symphony

Q-Symphony is Samsung’s coordinated TV-and-soundbar mode. On compatible combinations, the television speakers and Samsung soundbar are processed together rather than simply duplicating audio through two unrelated devices.

Compatibility depends on the specific TV and soundbar generation. A Samsung soundbar can work with a non-Samsung television through ordinary HDMI ARC/eARC or optical connections, but that does not mean Q-Symphony will be available.

Samsung’s HW-Q800F product page identifies Q-Symphony as a feature and displayed a U.S. price of $1,099.99 when observed in August 2026; it was listed as out of stock at that time. Price and availability should be checked before purchase.

Q-Symphony may behave differently with built-in apps and external HDMI sources. Check the exact product documentation, then compare the same dialogue scene with Q-Symphony enabled and disabled. More active speakers do not guarantee clearer dialogue or a wider soundstage.

LG WOW Orchestra

WOW Orchestra is LG’s corresponding integrated approach. Compatible LG TVs and soundbars can use the TV speakers and soundbar together as a synchronized output.

It is not a universal feature for every LG television or every LG soundbar, and it does not apply to third-party soundbars. Check the compatibility information for both model numbers before buying equipment specifically for this purpose. Depending on the television and software version, the option may appear under Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Out or a similarly named menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LG’s product listings describe WOW Orchestra as a combined TV-and-soundbar system. It may provide a broader front presentation, but a soundbar alone can produce cleaner imaging if the TV speakers introduce tonal differences or timing problems.

Sony and center-channel integration

Sony’s compatible systems can use the television as part of the center-channel presentation, which is different from simply duplicating the entire stereo signal through both devices. Sony’s official support material limits simultaneous output to particular products and settings, so model-level verification is essential.

Why simultaneous audio can sound worse

Timing mismatch

The TV and soundbar may apply different processing delays. Even a small difference can make one voice sound like two. Common symptoms include echo, hollow dialogue, flanging, smeared speech, doubled percussion, and lip-sync errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tonal mismatch

Television speakers and soundbars often have different frequency responses. Running them together can make dialogue nasal or harsh, bass boomy, or treble brittle. Their drivers may also be positioned at different heights and angles, producing distracting reflections.

Different volume curves

The two volume scales are not directly comparable. If the TV speakers are too loud, they can obscure the soundbar’s center image. If they are too quiet, they add little benefit while still contributing reflections.

Audio-format restrictions

Some dual-output modes change how the TV processes PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, or Atmos. A combined mode may disable or restrict a format that works when the soundbar is used alone. Confirm the exact manual before assuming that a dual-output arrangement preserves Atmos or surround processing.

Fixes for echo, delay, and lip-sync problems

Symptom What to try
No sound from the soundbar Check the soundbar input, confirm the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC port, enable HDMI-CEC, restart both devices, and try a suitable High Speed HDMI cable. Test optical if ARC remains unreliable.
TV speakers stop working Look for a combined or simultaneous-output option. If the menu offers only TV Speakers or External Speaker, the model may not support both.
Echo or doubled dialogue Lower the TV-speaker level, adjust audio delay, disable virtual surround or dialogue enhancement on one device, and compare with soundbar-only playback.
Lip-sync is wrong Determine whether audio leads or lags the picture, then adjust the correct delay control. Test PCM or Dolby Digital as a diagnostic step.
Atmos or surround disappears Compare the TV’s digital-audio setting and the soundbar’s incoming format. The combined mode may use a different processing path.
Volume control is confusing HDMI-CEC generally provides the simplest synchronized control. Optical may require the soundbar remote or a learning remote.

If the feature works intermittently, power-cycle both devices, confirm CEC is enabled, try another suitable HDMI cable, and determine whether the issue is limited to one input or audio format. LG also identifies ARC/CEC settings and cable compatibility as possible causes of soundbar connection problems; see its troubleshooting guidance.

Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

Is using both actually better?

Use both when the TV has a documented synchronized mode, the models are confirmed compatible, and a controlled listening test produces a clearer or more useful result. It can also help when the television’s center position improves dialogue anchoring, when a room needs modestly broader front coverage, or when an accessibility feature permits an independently useful volume balance.

Use only the soundbar when there is no documented dual-output feature, the devices produce echo, lip-sync cannot be corrected, advanced audio formats disappear, or the soundbar already has a dedicated center channel. A stronger soundbar, subwoofer, wireless rear speakers, or room calibration is usually a more coherent upgrade than forcing unrelated speakers to play together.

For older TVs, choose a soundbar with both HDMI ARC and optical inputs. For dialogue, prioritize a dedicated center channel and adjustable voice enhancement. For genuine surround sound, use a system with properly positioned rear speakers; concurrent TV-speaker playback does not create rear channels or automatically produce surround sound.

Practical buying guidance

Buy a Samsung or LG ecosystem soundbar for this specific purpose only after confirming compatibility for both model numbers. A conventional soundbar such as the Sonos Beam (Gen 2), listed at $499 on Sonos’s U.S. store when observed in August 2026, is better understood as a soundbar-only upgrade: it supports HDMI eARC, TV remote synchronization, Wi-Fi, and Dolby Atmos, but is not presented as a system for combining unrelated TV speakers with the Beam.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, LG’s Sound Suite H7 and optional surround components are better considered a modular immersive-audio system than a simple way to turn on two independent front audio sources. Prices announced by LG on January 6, 2026 included $999.99 for the H7 soundbar, but current availability should be checked before publication or purchase.

A High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet can be useful for ARC/eARC troubleshooting. Avoid treating HDMI splitters, Bluetooth transmitters, or generic audio mixers as guaranteed dual-output solutions; they can introduce format loss, latency, extra volume controls, or compatibility problems.
