The Queen of the Night most often meant by this headline is Epiphyllum oxypetalum, a tropical epiphytic cactus with large, fragrant white flowers. Each flower opens at night and wilts before dawn—but that does not mean the whole plant blooms on only one night a year. Large specimens can produce several crops of flowers in a season, according to Bellevue University’s greenhouse account.

Which flower is called Queen of the Night?

The name usually refers here to Epiphyllum oxypetalum, also known as tan hua. Kew’s Plants of the World Online accepts it as a cactus species and describes it as a succulent epiphyte: a plant that grows on other plants for support rather than rooting in soil. Kew records its native range as Central Mexico to Nicaragua. Kew’s taxonomic record provides the accepted name and range.

“Queen of the Night” is not a unique botanical name. In Arizona, it can also refer to Peniocereus greggii, a different cactus associated with the Sonoran Desert. A local notice documented a bloom there on June 2, 2026; that date describes a specific Arizona event, not a forecast for E. oxypetalum or other places. Discover Marana’s regional guide discusses the Arizona plant and the shared common name.

What does “blooms for one night” actually mean?

For E. oxypetalum, the fleeting display belongs to each individual flower: it opens at night and wilts before dawn. Bellevue University’s greenhouse account says the plant’s white flowers appear from late spring through late summer in its greenhouse, and that a large specimen can produce several crops during one season. That observation is not a universal calendar or a guarantee that every plant will flower on the same schedule. Bellevue University’s account describes the flowering and its greenhouse context.

When does Queen of the Night bloom?

There is no single date that applies to every plant called Queen of the Night. For E. oxypetalum, Bellevue University reports a late-spring-to-late-summer flowering period for its greenhouse plant. For Arizona’s P. greggii, local timing is tied to that plant and place; the June 2, 2026 notice is a record of one bloom, not a general annual prediction. To interpret a local bloom announcement, check the scientific name and location rather than relying on the common name alone.

What is the flower like?

Bellevue University describes E. oxypetalum’s flowers as strongly fragrant, with a scent resembling magnolia. Its account identifies benzyl salicylate and methyl linoleate as principal components of the odor. Those chemical details are reported by the university; they should not be taken as a broader independently verified chemical profile.
