Yes—but not automatically every electrical box. The original Shelly Wall Display X2 is designed for in-wall electrical-box installation: its power module sits inside the box, is secured with two screws, and the touchscreen mounts over the finished wall. Shelly lists the assembled unit at approximately 86 × 173 × 33 mm (3.39 × 6.81 × 1.30 inches).
That does not prove it will replace every North American single-gang switch. You must verify the box dimensions, screw spacing, depth, wiring, voltage, load, certifications and local electrical requirements—especially because the original X2 is listed for 230 V AC, while the newer X2i is listed for 100–240 V AC.

The short answer
Shelly says the Wall Display X2 fits “standard electrical wall boxes for light switches.” Its installation guide confirms that the power supply module is placed in the wall box and fastened with two screws. The display then connects to the module’s header pins and is secured with two more screws.
In other words, the X2 is not merely a tablet intended to sit on a wall. It was designed as a permanently mounted wall control with an in-wall power and relay module. However, “standard” is not a universal box specification. European switch boxes, U.S. single-gang boxes, masonry boxes, old-work drywall boxes and deep boxes can differ substantially.

What Shelly specifies
| Specification | Original Wall Display X2 |
|---|---|
| Assembled dimensions | 86 × 173 × 33 mm |
| Approximate inches | 3.39 × 6.81 × 1.30 in |
| Display-only depth | Approximately 10.5 mm |
| Screen | 6.9-inch color touchscreen |
| Mounting | Electrical wall box |
| Supply listed by Shelly | 230 V AC, 50/60 Hz |
| Maximum switching current | 5 A |
The 173 mm width is particularly important. A conventional switch opening may be physically suitable for the power module but still leave an opening that the front panel cannot cover. Measure the finished wall, not just the nominal box name.
How the X2 mounts
- Switch off the circuit breaker and verify that the conductors are de-energized.
- Confirm that the box contains the required live and neutral conductors.
- Prepare the conductors to Shelly’s stated range: 0.5–4 mm2 (20–11 AWG), with approximately 6–7 mm of insulation stripped.
- Connect live to L, neutral to N, and the switched load to O and neutral.
- If retaining a physical switch or button, connect it to SW and live according to Shelly’s wiring diagram.
- Fold the wiring carefully into the box and insert the power module.
- Secure the power module to the electrical box using its two mounting screws.
- Align the display’s female header with the power module’s header pins. Do not force or twist the display.
- Press the display into place until it clicks, then install and tighten the two lower display screws.
- Restore power and configure the device, testing both the touchscreen and relay.
This is mains electrical work, not simply wall-mounting a screen. Use a qualified electrician where required by local law or where the existing wiring is uncertain.
Will it fit a North American electrical box?
Do not assume so from the word “standard.” Shelly’s documentation confirms the intended wall-box installation but does not establish compatibility with every U.S. single-gang box, mounting-ear pattern, screw spacing or electrical code.
Before purchasing or cutting into the wall, check:
- Box dimensions: Measure height, width and internal geometry.
- Screw-hole spacing: Confirm that the X2’s two-screw power-module mounting points align with the box. Do not substitute the X2i’s published mounting dimensions for the original X2.
- Depth: The assembled product is listed as 33 mm deep, but that is not a universal minimum box-depth specification. The box must also accommodate the power module, connectors and conductor slack.
- Opening and wall finish: Make sure the large front panel covers the existing opening and sits flush against the finished wall.
- Wiring volume: Line, neutral, load and optional switch conductors must fit without being crushed or sharply bent.
- Box style: European, U.S. single-gang, two-gang, masonry and old-work boxes are not interchangeable assumptions.
- Regional approval: Check the product’s rating, approval markings and local code requirements.
A box can be mechanically attachable yet still be unsuitable because it is too shallow, has incompatible screw spacing, lacks sufficient conductor volume or is not approved for the intended jurisdiction.

Electrical requirements
Neutral is required for the documented mains installation
The X2 power module uses L for live, N for neutral, O for the switched output and SW for an optional switch or button input. A switch location containing only a switch loop and no neutral is not ready for the normal X2 installation. The circuit would need to be rewired or a different powering arrangement considered.
Check the voltage and region
The original X2 is listed for 230 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Do not treat it as a universal household-voltage device or assume that a European-market model is automatically suitable or code-compliant in the United States.
Recommended Free Tools
The newer Shelly Wall Display X2i is listed for 100–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz, but its broader voltage range does not automatically establish approval for every country or box type.
Check the load
Shelly lists the original X2 relay for a maximum switching current of 5 A and a maximum switching voltage of 230 V AC. The load still has to be appropriate for the relay: resistive, capacitive and inductive loads can behave differently, and Shelly identifies an RC snubber where applicable. Motors, HVAC equipment, electronic drivers and unusual loads deserve particular scrutiny. A 5-A label is not permission to connect any arbitrary 5-A appliance.
Can the X2 replace an existing wall switch?
Mechanically, replacing a wall switch is the intended use. Electrically, the existing location must have the right conductors and the circuit must be redesigned correctly.
- Live and neutral present: Potentially suitable, subject to physical fit, load rating and code compliance.
- No neutral: Not suitable for the documented normal mains wiring without changing the wiring or using another approach.
- Three-way or multi-way circuit: Do not assume the X2’s SW input behaves like a conventional multi-way switch. The circuit requires careful redesign.
- Crowded box: A deeper or larger compatible box may be necessary.
USB power is not a full substitute
Shelly documents USB-C as an alternative power method. That can make the X2 useful for testing, tabletop use or a display-only installation, but the guide states that the switching-circuit functionality cannot be used when the device is powered through USB.

Original X2 versus X2i
| Feature | Original X2 | X2i |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate dimensions | 86 × 173 × 33 mm | 86 × 173 × 33 mm with power base |
| Stated AC input | 230 V AC | 100–240 V AC |
| Power design | Original integrated power module | Interchangeable power base |
| Connectivity/software | Older hardware; listed Android 8.1 | Wi-Fi 6 dual-band; listed Android 11 |
| Output options | Original X2 relay arrangement | Single-output base included; optional two-output base |
The Shelly two-output power base is listed for compatible i-series displays such as the X1i and X2i. It is not an upgrade path for the original X2.

Shelly Wall Display X2i
Choose the X2i when you want the same general long-display format with newer hardware, an interchangeable power base and a broader stated input-voltage range. Physical box fit, regional approval and code compliance still need verification.
Shelly Wall Display 4-inch
For a smaller location, Shelly lists the compact Wall Display at approximately 85 × 85 × 30 mm. It is a better match for a small wall area where the X2’s 173-mm width is excessive. See the product page.

Shelly Wall Display XL
The XL is intended for a much larger dashboard, measuring approximately 155.8 × 272.5 × 38.3 mm. It needs substantially more wall space and is not a practical choice when replacing a compact switch location.
USB-powered tablet or display
A tablet avoids mains wiring and box compatibility problems and may be preferable for renters or flexible dashboards. It will not directly replace the X2’s in-wall relay module.
Installation failure points to avoid
- Assuming “standard” means U.S. single-gang: Compare actual dimensions and mounting points.
- Ignoring depth: The module and wiring need room; do not compress them behind the display.
- Using the wrong model’s specifications: X2 and X2i ratings, power architecture and mounting information differ.
- Forcing the display header: Align the pins carefully before pressing the display onto the power module.
- Overloading the relay: Confirm current and load category, and use appropriate suppression where required.
- Making multiple terminal connections improperly: Follow the guide’s terminal instructions and conductor limits.
- Skipping the finished-wall measurement: The front panel must cover the opening and sit correctly on the wall.
What to do before buying
- Identify whether you are buying the original X2 or the X2i.
- Check the regional electrical rating and approval markings.
- Measure the box, screw-hole spacing, depth and finished-wall opening.
- Verify live and neutral are available at the location.
- Confirm the controlled load is within the relay’s rating and load category.
- Check Wi-Fi coverage at the planned wall position.
- Confirm local electrical-code requirements or have an electrician assess the installation.
Verdict
The Shelly Wall Display X2 is designed to mount to an electrical wall box. For a compatible European-style installation with the required wiring, it can replace a conventional wall control while adding a touchscreen dashboard and relay.
For a North American installation, the responsible answer is narrower: do not assume it fits a standard single-gang box or is approved for your circuit without checking the actual dimensions, voltage, wiring and local requirements. If you need a newer model with a broader stated input range, investigate the X2i. If the location is too small, consider the 4-inch display; if you only need a dashboard, USB power or a tablet may be simpler.
