No—not as a proven treatment for an ordinary home lawn. Extension guidance says there is no research supporting sugar as a weed killer for residential turf. A preliminary study did find fewer annual weeds after sugar was applied to degraded woodlands in Australia, but that restoration experiment does not establish a safe or effective lawn treatment.
What sugar did in the woodland study
In a 2004 field study, Charles Sturt University ecologists Suzanne Prober, Kevin Thiele and Ian Lunt tested ways to restore native ground cover at two degraded woodland sites near Young, in central New South Wales. They applied 0.5 kg of sugar per square metre every three months. The researchers reported that the treatment almost eliminated soil nitrate during autumn and dramatically reduced annual weed growth; treated plots also helped native kangaroo grass establish.
The team described the findings as preliminary and called for further trials at other sites, with other carbon sources and at practical scales. This was a woodland-restoration intervention, not a lawn-care trial or a recommended household application rate.
Why it may have affected weeds
The proposed explanation was that soil microbes used the added sugar as a carbon source and took up available nutrients as they grew. Ian Lunt described the process this way: “When sugar is spread on the soil, it feeds soil micro-organisms, which then absorb lots of soil nutrients as they grow.” That proposed nutrient competition may have constrained some annual weeds in the study’s specific restoration conditions; it does not show that sugar selectively kills weeds in turf.

Why the result does not translate into a lawn recipe
The available extension guidance does not establish a home-lawn sugar rate or show that sugar controls particular weeds without harming desirable grass. The woodland trial involved different conditions and goals: reducing annual weeds while establishing native plants in degraded sites. It cannot tell a homeowner whether sugar will work on crabgrass, quackgrass or another lawn weed.
University of Minnesota Extension guidance, summarized in a local newspaper republication and an Ask Extension response, says microbes consume added sugar, that sugar does not provide the essential nutrients a lawn needs, and that there is no research supporting sugar as a weed killer. The Ask Extension response also says maple sap, which contains sugar, will not kill weeds or other plants.

What to do about weeds in a lawn
Identify the weed and the condition helping it spread
Start by identifying the weed and checking the lawn itself. Thin or stressed turf can leave room for weeds; mowing practices, watering, soil compaction and other site conditions may contribute. Extension lawn guidance treats weed management as both a weed-control problem and a turf-health problem.
Help desirable turf compete
Support dense, locally appropriate turf with sound basic care. Colorado State University Extension recommends mowing higher, watering deeply and less frequently, and addressing soil compaction. Delaware Extension likewise emphasizes maintaining a healthy, competitive lawn.

Choose any treatment for the specific weed and turf
If nonchemical care is not enough, match the control to the weed species, its life cycle and the lawn grass. A preemergence treatment targets weeds before they emerge; a postemergence treatment targets weeds already growing. A selective herbicide may control a target weed while sparing compatible turf when chosen and applied correctly; a nonselective product can kill desirable grass too. Follow the product label, including its directions and restrictions, and spot-treat where appropriate. Misapplied pesticides can damage lawns.
