Leaving interior doors open does not make heat or guarantee a warmer home. In many forced-air homes, an open door can help air from a room flow back to a central return; closing the door may disrupt that airflow if the room lacks a suitable return path. The right answer depends on your heating system and how its air returns—not on a universal rule to leave every door open.
Why door position can affect comfort in a forced-air home
A forced-air system sends heated air through supply ducts into rooms. That air must also get back to the HVAC equipment, usually through a central return. If a room has no dedicated return or other route back, its doorway may be part of that route. DOE Building Science Education explains: “Dedicated returns help ensure that the air pressure between rooms is balanced.” DOE Building Science Education: HVAC Ducted Returns
With the door open, air can move more freely between the room and the central return area. If the door is closed while the supply continues to deliver air and there is no adequate return path, pressure in the room can change. That imbalance can affect airflow and comfort. It does not mean an open door adds heat; it can simply make circulation easier in a system whose return-air path is limited.
This advice applies primarily to forced-air systems. Hydronic radiators, baseboard heating, and other systems do not circulate heated air through supply ducts in the same way, so forced-air return-path guidance should not automatically be applied to them.

What a DOE case study shows—and does not show
A U.S. Department of Energy Building America report measured one 1,750-square-foot Florida home with a central return while its air handler was running. With interior doors open, measured infiltration was 0.42 air changes per hour (ACH). As six doors were closed incrementally, measurements rose to 0.62 ACH, 0.94 ACH, and 1.15 ACH. With the doors closed, the report recorded a central-zone pressure of −6 Pa relative to outdoors and an average pressure drop of 18 Pa across closed doors. DOE Building America, Managing the Drivers of Airflow and Water Vapor Transit in Existing Single-Family Homes
Those readings describe that house and its test setup; they are not a forecast for other homes. The report’s figure concerns infiltration with the air-conditioner blower running. It does not establish how many degrees warmer a home will be in winter or how much heating energy an open door saves. No general degree or energy-savings figure is established by this evidence.

Should you keep bedroom doors open when the heat is on?
If your home has forced-air heating and a bedroom has no dedicated return, transfer grille, or jump duct, leaving its door open may help air return toward the central return. If the room remains comfortable with the door closed, its return path may already be adequate. Door position alone cannot diagnose the system, and an open door is not a guaranteed fix for a cold room.
DOE identifies several ways to provide a return-air pathway: dedicated returns, transfer grilles, jump ducts, and door undercuts. Which option fits depends on the home’s layout and HVAC design. A transfer grille or jump duct is a possible system-specific component, not a stand-alone way to heat a home.

- Save Money and Energy -Warm In Winter and Cool in Summer:Door sweep for bottom of door can prevent the leakage of air conditioning and heating, make your room more efficient in cooling or heating, Effectively Prevents Airflow, Reduce Energy Consumption.Self-adhesive door draft blocker is very suitable to cover the gaps of exterior/interior doors, rv doors, shower room, baseboard, threshold, windows, garage, basement and furniture,high-density silicone Material attaches to door, can glides smoothly over carpet
- Hollow Arc Cavity Sound Insulation Design:Door sweep triple design is adopted,This draft stopper goes beyond just blocking cold air. It also helps muffle noise from outside the room, making it ideal for bedrooms, offices, or anywhere you need a quieter environment. Additionally, door bottom seal strip acts as a barrier against other unwanted visitors crawling under the door.Multi-Purpose & Pet-Friendly
- Wide Waterproof Backing Adhesive-Strong Adhesion:Upgrade under door gap filler widened backing adhesive 1.5 inches and 1mm groove, When encountering resistance and ground friction, the adhesive will not be lifted up, This sticks well, doesn't make a dragging noise when door is opened/closed,Just in case you can use tape or thumbtacks as a protective layer
- Installs In Under 1 Minute-Adjustable:Under Door draft stopper Size: 1.96"W x 39" L,seal the gap of 0 to 1.5inch,Measure Twice, Cut Once:,it's important to measure carefully, A little extra measuring can prevent wasted material.(Note:1.In cold weather, we recommend to heat the adhesive for 2 minutes by Hair Dryer before installation. 2.The weather stripping door seal not work well if the wall surface is rough or with texture. 3. Please press several times and leave it for 24 hours
Why you should not close vents or shut off heat in unused rooms
Closing a room door is different from shutting off its supply vent, but restricting airflow can create problems in many forced-air homes. DOE’s retrofit guide says: “This is not recommended because it can reduce airflow through the air handler, causing pressure imbalances, putting stress on the duct connections, and affecting air quality if you are using your air handler for ventilation.” U.S. Department of Energy, Building America Best Practices Series Vol. 14: Energy Renovations HVAC Guide
DOE also advises against turning heat entirely off in unused parts of the home. Keep every room at least 50°F in winter to help prevent frozen pipes. This is a minimum precaution cited by DOE, not a recommendation that every room be set to that temperature for comfort.

What to check if one room is cold when its door is closed
- Identify the system type. Return-path advice here is for forced-air heating; other systems need system-specific guidance.
- Look for a return route. Check whether the room has a return grille or a designed pathway such as a transfer grille, jump duct, or door undercut.
- Notice whether the symptom changes. If comfort changes when you open the door, that is useful information to share with an HVAC professional, but it does not by itself identify the cause.
- Ask for an airflow and return-path assessment. For persistent comfort or pressure problems, have the system assessed rather than relying on door position alone. Technical field work can include pressure testing; design choices should account for the home and system.
- Consider practical constraints. A proposed grille or duct path may raise privacy, noise, safety, or building-code concerns. The sources do not rank products or prescribe one solution for every home.
The DOE Midwest Weatherization Best Practices Field Guide describes relieving room-to-room pressure differences greater than 3 Pascals in its field procedure, using approaches such as door undercuts, direct or offset grilles, and jump ducts. That figure is a technical field-guide procedure, not a universal do-it-yourself design target. DOE Midwest Weatherization Best Practices Field Guide
