Does Humic Acid Improve Soil and Increase Crop Yields?

Humic acid may support soil and crop performance, but pooled research results are not a field-level guarantee. Learn what affects its effectiveness and how to evaluate an amendment.

Humic acid can improve crop performance, but it is not a guaranteed yield booster. A 2024 meta-analysis found average increases of 12% in crop yield, 27% in nitrogen-use efficiency and 17% in nitrogen uptake across the studies it analyzed. Those pooled averages are not forecasts for a particular field: results varied with climate, soil, crop and fertilizer management.

What the evidence says about yield

Ma, Cheng and Zhang’s 2024 meta-analysis of humic acid fertilizers reported that, on average, crop yield increased by 12%, nitrogen-use efficiency by 27% and nitrogen uptake by 17% across the studies analyzed. The authors also found that outcomes depended on environmental and management conditions. These are relative pooled results from research studies, not a promise that a specific product or farm will achieve the same gains. Read the 2024 meta-analysis in Agronomy.

The findings support considering humic acid as one possible agricultural amendment, not treating it as a substitute for sound soil management or a guaranteed return on investment. The meta-analysis reports broad averages; it does not establish what a particular field will gain or what any product will earn back.

How humic acid may affect soil and plants

A 2022 review describes reported effects on soil physical, chemical and biological characteristics, as well as crop performance. Proposed or reported pathways include changes in soil structure, water-holding capacity, cation-exchange capacity and nutrient availability, alongside effects on nutrient uptake, roots or plant growth. The evidence is heterogeneous: these are not benefits that every product will produce in every soil. Read the review in Frontiers in Agronomy.

Farm Made Organics Humic+ Liquid Humic Acid Soil Conditioner, 32 oz
  • 5% HUMIC ACID FROM LEONARDITE: Our liquid concentrate is sourced from real Leonardite ore and runs 5% humic acid, about 2X the concentration of the leading liquid humic acid brand (2% from lower grade brown coal). Blended with Fulvic Acid, Sea Kelp Extract, and Soluble Potash to support stronger roots, healthier soil biology, and better nutrient uptake for lawns, gardens, flowers, vegetables, shrubs, and trees.
  • WORKS ON LAWNS, GARDENS AND MORE: Whether you are reviving a stressed lawn or growing vegetables, Humic+ works below the surface to loosen compacted soil, encourage deeper root systems, and help your plants use the nutrients already in your soil. Great for lawns, gardens, flowers, raised beds, trees, shrubs, and indoor plants.
  • FOURTH GENERATION FAMILY FARM: We are Farm Made Organics, a fourth generation family farm in Delaware. Humic+ was not built in a lab, it is the same humic acid and sea kelp blend we used on our own fields for years before we ever bottled it for other growers. Real farmers, real soil, real results.
  • EASY TO MIX AND APPLY: Simply mix Humic+ with water and apply with a lawn sprayer, hose end sprayer, backpack sprayer, or watering can. Use every 2 to 4 weeks during the growing season on lawns, gardens, vegetables, trees, shrubs, and landscape plants for ongoing soil support.
  • YES, IT SMELLS, AND NOTHING IS WRONG WITH IT: Real Ascophyllum sea kelp and Leonardite humic acid smell earthy, a bit like the shore at low tide. That is the ingredients themselves, not spoilage and not a preservative. We do not add fragrance to hide it. Dilute it, water it in, and the smell is gone for good.

“Humic acid” does not describe a single uniform input. Products can be derived from coal, lignite, soil or organic materials, and their properties may differ by source, composition, solubility, molecular size and functional groups. That variation is one reason results from one formulation or trial should not be assumed to apply to another.

Why results vary from field to field

The 2024 meta-analysis identifies climate, soil conditions, crop type and fertilization as factors that influence the response. The 2022 review also points to differences in product source, rate, application method and chemical properties. In practice, a result depends on the interaction between the amendment, the crop and the field’s existing conditions—not just the product name.

The review calls for more field validation across crops, soils, weather and fertilizer regimes, as well as better characterization of humic-acid structure and fractions. Long-term and field-scale effects are less settled than broad commercial claims may suggest.

How to evaluate a humic acid fertilizer

Before choosing a humic acid soil amendment, assess whether its label and formulation fit the crop and the way it will be applied. Compare products on declared composition and practical fit rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

Application methods and rates

The 2022 review describes soil application, foliar sprays, seed treatment, root dipping and drip irrigation, as well as use alongside inorganic fertilizers. Those are reported approaches, not universal recommendations. Product form, concentration, crop and application route all affect how directions should be interpreted.

There is no universal rate established by the cited sources. Follow the product label for the crop and method, and seek locally relevant agronomic advice when deciding whether an application fits your soil and fertilizer plan. Do not infer a dose from the meta-analysis averages.
