Don’t use Epsom salt to kill aphids. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, not an aphid treatment. Washington State University Extension says it is not registered as a pesticide and should not be used as one; it also reports no scientific evidence supporting pest-control claims. No aphid-specific evidence establishes that Epsom salt kills aphids. Washington State University Extension’s Epsom Salt Use in Home Gardens and Landscapes
How to manage aphids without Epsom salt
Choose a response based on how much damage the aphids are causing, whether you can reach them, and whether the plant can tolerate rinsing or a contact treatment.
1. Check the damage before treating
Aphids often cause little or no harm to established plants, and natural controls may reduce an infestation. Look for meaningful damage—such as curled or distorted leaves, yellowing, or stunted shoots—rather than treating every aphid you see.
2. Rinse or prune accessible infestations
On sturdy plants, wash aphids off with a strong stream of plain water. If practical, prune away infested leaves or stems. Aphids sheltered inside curled leaves or galls may escape contact sprays; remove affected portions where appropriate.
#1 Best Overall
- READY-TO-USE CONTACT SPRAY: No mixing required. Thoroughly spray insecticide on all plant parts, including the underside of leaves. Pests must be sprayed directly to achieve control
- FOR ORGANIC GARDENING: This product can be used indoors, outdoors and in greenhouses on vegetables, fruit trees, ornamentals, shrubs, flowers and gardens
- USE UP TO DAY OF HARVEST: This product may be applied to edibles up to and including the day of harvest
- KILLS BUGS THROUGH CONTACT: Controls aphids, mealybugs, mites, leafhoppers, psyllids, scale insects, thrips, whiteflies and other listed pests.
- CONTAINS FATTY ACID SALTS: The formula contains specifically selected soaps (fatty acid salts)
3. Give natural enemies a chance
Lady beetles, lacewings, syrphid fly larvae, soldier beetles, and tiny parasitic wasps feed on aphids. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides that can harm these beneficial insects.
4. Consider a labeled contact treatment if needed
If physical measures are not enough, an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil labeled for the plant and pest may help. These products work by contact: spray the aphids directly and cover leaf undersides thoroughly. They kill aphids present at application, so repeat applications may be needed; follow the product label.

Choose a method that fits the infestation
| Situation | Practical choice | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| A few aphids on an established plant, with little damage | Monitor and preserve natural enemies | Aphids may decline naturally, and established plants often tolerate them. |
| Aphids are accessible and the plant can take a forceful rinse | Wash them off with plain water | Rinsing is less suitable for plants that cannot tolerate a strong stream. |
| Infested leaves or stems can be removed | Prune affected portions | This can help when aphids are sheltered in curled leaves or galls. |
| Damage persists after physical measures | Use a labeled insecticidal soap or horticultural oil | Direct, thorough coverage is essential; check plant and pest directions, temperature, plant sensitivity, and pollinator exposure. |
