You do not need cinnamon on indoor plants. Cinnamon has mild antifungal properties in some settings, but the available evidence does not show that ordinary pantry cinnamon reliably treats houseplant disease, prevents root rot, controls fungus gnats, or works as a rooting hormone. Healthy cuttings, clean media, correct watering, and drainage do the work that the cinnamon myth claims for itself.
Where the cinnamon idea comes from
The advice usually takes one of three forms: sprinkle cinnamon on the soil surface to stop mold, dust a cutting before it goes into water or soil so it roots faster, or add it to the pot to deter gnats and rot. Each claim is repeated widely online, and each one rests on the same thin premise: that a spice with known antifungal compounds must protect a plant in a home pot. Laboratory activity does not carry over that easily, and the field of cinnamon research shows how much the result depends on the material being tested.
What the evidence actually establishes
Three sources matter most here, and they address different questions.
University extension guidance on viral gardening tips
North Carolina Cooperative Extension tested the claim that cinnamon prevents damping-off and helps cuttings root faster in its “Gardening Hacks or Hype?” article. Its conclusion is qualified. Cinnamon has mild antifungal properties and may inhibit some pathogens when sprinkled on seed-starting mix. It does not replace sanitation, airflow, or sterile tools. Extension specialists say cuttings can be dusted with cinnamon if a gardener wants to, but readers should not expect miracle results. Source: N.C. Cooperative Extension, “Gardening Hacks or Hype? Debunking Viral Tips With Science and Common Sense”.

A laboratory and greenhouse study on tomato plants
A 2019 study in the European Journal of Plant Pathology tested cinnamon powder in vitro and in vivo against Botrytis cinerea, the fungus behind grey mould. In the laboratory, a 1% cinnamon water suspension and a 1% filtrate reduced lesion growth by 64% and 47.8%, respectively, at the first assessment the authors reported. Summaries of the work date that assessment to three days. Later results varied by formulation. Greenhouse tomato plants treated with cinnamon filtrates showed less grey-mould symptoms than plants given water alone.
These figures describe one pathogen, one crop, specific concentrations, and controlled conditions. They do not test a dusting of kitchen cinnamon on a pothos, a fiddle-leaf fig, or a soil surface that stays damp for weeks. The study is useful as evidence that cinnamon preparations can affect some fungi, and it says nothing about whether a home gardener should add the spice to a houseplant. A review of cinnamon in agriculture
A 2021 review in PubMed Central, “Cinnamon as a Useful Preventive Substance for the Care of Human and Plant Health”, covers a wide range of cinnamon materials, compounds, extracts, essential oils, pests, and plant diseases. That breadth is the main lesson. Essential oils, extracts, and water-based filtrates are different materials from ground bark sprinkled on soil, and results for one do not transfer to the other.
| Houseplant claim | What the evidence shows | Source and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Cinnamon stops damping-off or mold on seed-starting mix | Mild antifungal action may inhibit some pathogens | Extension guidance; does not replace sanitation, airflow, or sterile tools |
| Cinnamon helps cuttings root faster | Not established as a rooting hormone | Extension guidance; cinnamon is optional |
| Cinnamon cures grey mould on plants | Reduced lesion growth on tomato plants in a controlled study | Tomato, Botrytis cinerea, lab and greenhouse conditions; not tested on houseplants |
| Cinnamon controls root rot | Not presented as a treatment in university guidance | Root rot is linked to poor drainage and overwatering |
| Cinnamon eliminates fungus gnats | No established control shown | Gnats are managed through moisture, debris, traps, and Bti |
Propagating cuttings without relying on cinnamon
Cuttings fail far more often from rot, dirty tools, and a poor medium than from a missing spice. If a cutting is going to be dusted, treat the dust as a minor and optional step, not the reason the cutting roots.

- Choose a healthy parent plant. Take cuttings from firm, pest-free stems rather than from a plant already declining.
- Sterilize sharp cutting tools before the first cut and between plants. Wipe the blade with rubbing alcohol or a dilute household disinfectant, then rinse and dry.
- Use clean, disease-free rooting medium. Look for a mix with good water retention and open air spaces, not old potting soil from a plant that had problems.
- Keep the medium evenly moist rather than soggy. A cutting in standing water or in saturated soil is more likely to rot at the base.
- Place the cutting in bright indirect light with moderate humidity. Direct midday sun can scorch cuttings before roots form.
- Use a commercial rooting hormone only if the plant is known to be difficult to root. University of Illinois Extension describes powdered rooting hormone as an option for some difficult-to-root plants, not a requirement for most houseplants. Source: University of Illinois Extension, “Propagation | Houseplants”.
Suspected root rot
Yellowing, wilting, and soft or discolored roots can have several causes, but the most common pattern is a container that stays wet. University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program links root rot with poor drainage and overwatering, and emphasizes aeration, drainage, and watering that matches the plant’s needs. Cinnamon does not appear in that guidance as a treatment. Source: UC Statewide IPM Program, “Houseplant Problems”.
To check a suspected case:
- Lift the plant from its pot and inspect the root ball. Healthy roots are firm and pale to white; rotted roots are brown or black, soft, and often smell sour.
- Trim away the rotted roots with sterilized scissors. Discard the old soil rather than reusing it.
- Repot in a container with drainage holes and fresh, clean medium. Water only when the top layer is dry, as appropriate for the species.
- Discard a plant if the rot has spread through most of the root system and the stem base is also soft. Saving a plant at that stage is unlikely, and replacing it is the safer choice.
Fungus gnats
Cinnamon is not a reliable way to get rid of fungus gnats. UC IPM notes that overwatering and poor drainage encourage gnat populations, so management begins with moisture and debris. The usual steps are:

Reduce moisture and debris
Remove standing water from saucers and decorative pots, and clear dead leaves and fallen debris from the soil surface. Let the top layer of soil dry between waterings, as far as the plant tolerates.
Use yellow sticky traps
Yellow sticky traps can sometimes reduce the adult flies. They catch adults but do not kill the larvae living in the soil, so they work best as part of a combined approach.
Apply Bti to target larvae
Repeated applications of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) can control larvae in many cases. Use only products labeled for fungus gnats in houseplants, and follow the label’s rate and repeat schedule.

Visible growth on soil or leaves
Do not assume all visible growth is the same problem. University of Maryland Extension’s indoor plant disease resource, updated March 13, 2023, separates root rots, powdery mildew, grey mould, bacterial and fungal leaf spots, and algae or fungal growth on potting media. Each condition calls for a different fix, so identify the problem before choosing a treatment. Source: University of Maryland Extension, “Indoor Plant Diseases”.
Choosing the right fix
Compare options by the problem they address, not by the presence of a kitchen ingredient. A useful test is whether a measure corrects the underlying moisture, drainage, sanitation, or airflow conditions, or whether it is only a surface treatment.
| Problem | Measures that address the cause | Cinnamon’s role |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting that will not root | Healthy material, sterile tools, clean medium, steady moisture, bright indirect light | Optional; not a root stimulant |
| Root rot | Drainage, aeration, correct watering, fresh medium, trimming rotted roots | None established |
| Fungus gnats | Less standing water, removal of debris, yellow sticky traps, repeated Bti for larvae | None established |
| Powdery mildew, leaf spots, or grey mould on leaves | Identify the organism, improve airflow, remove affected tissue, use labeled treatments where appropriate | Not tested on these houseplant conditions |
Cinnamon is harmless to try on a cutting if you already have it, but it should not replace any step in the table. For a plant that is actively failing, the sanitation and watering steps matter far more than any spice.
