Usually, no. University extension guidance does not support ultrasonic rat repellers as a dependable way to clear an open yard, garden or other outdoor area. Rats can habituate to repeated sounds, and the strongest practical evidence favors removing food and shelter, sealing building openings and using carefully placed traps instead.
That conclusion is about reliability, not a claim that every current device has been tested in every outdoor setting. No trustworthy outdoor coverage radius or current model-by-model success rate is established in the cited sources.

What “work outdoors” needs to mean
An outdoor repeller would need to do more than produce a sound. For a useful result, it would have to make rats leave, stop returning, or prevent new rats from entering an area for a sustained period. A device that briefly changes movement in a small test enclosure is not the same as dependable control of rats around a yard, compost pile, shed or garden.

Outdoor conditions make that standard harder to meet. Sound spreads through an open, irregular space that contains fences, vegetation, buildings and other obstacles. Rats can approach from several directions, and food or shelter may be more compelling than an intermittent nuisance sound. Weather, vegetation growth, battery condition and the device’s actual placement can also change what reaches the ground where rats travel. The cited extension publications do not establish a dependable effective radius for a current consumer unit in an open yard.

What universities and wildlife researchers have found
University of Missouri: repeated sound is not reliable control
The University of Missouri Extension publication Controlling Rats explains that rats learn their surroundings and become accustomed to repeated sounds. It concludes that high-frequency and ultrasonic sounds are generally ineffective for controlling rats in homes and gardens. It also states that ultrasound has not been shown to drive established rodents out of buildings or cause above-normal mortality.
This matters outdoors because a rat that pauses, changes direction or avoids a spot briefly has not necessarily been removed from the property. If food, water and cover remain available, the animal can learn that the sound is not an enduring threat.
University of Georgia: sanitation and trapping come first
The University of Georgia Integrated Pest Management guidance, dated December 19, 2025, says sound and flashing lights have almost no effect on repelling rats and mice. It characterizes ultrasound devices as almost completely useless against rodent pests and directs readers toward prevention and trapping. Its concise practical advice is: “Sanitation is the best method of control.” That sentence is guidance, not a measured percentage of improvement.

The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension peer-reviewed handout Sonic Pest Repellents, revised in October 2015, says commercially available sonic pest devices for residential use had not been shown effective in scientific studies. It advises against using them for common pest problems. This is broad guidance about sonic devices, not a controlled test of every outdoor rat model.
Older controlled work: a short-lived movement effect
A historical review by Stephen A. Schumake of USDA/APHIS/ADC, published in the National Wildlife Research Center’s 1995 repellents conference, describes controlled protocols for six commercial ultrasonic devices. Those tests indicated a 30–50% reduction in movement activity, but the review also reports no significant repellency effects beyond 3 to 7 days of exposure. The figures belong to those historical protocols; they are not a current outdoor efficacy estimate and should not be applied to every device.

A 1984 presentation by Denver Wildlife Research Center researchers documents laboratory tests with wild Norway rats and field structures containing rat or mouse infestations. The available abstract describes the protocols rather than offering a general conclusion about today’s outdoor products. Together, these older studies show why a short-term behavioral response should not be confused with durable yard control.
Why an ultrasonic unit can appear to work briefly
Habituation changes the response
Ultrasonic products are designed to emit frequencies above the range most people hear. A rat may initially investigate, pause or avoid a location. Repeated exposure can become predictable, however. Once the animal learns that the sound is not followed by capture, injury or loss of access to food, the avoidance response may fade.
The historical 3-to-7-day finding is especially important for outdoor expectations. A property owner may see fewer sightings immediately after installation because rats alter their routes or remain hidden. That observation does not demonstrate that the population has left. Tracks, droppings, gnaw marks and fresh burrows are better indicators of whether activity is continuing.
Sound does not remove the reasons rats are present
Rats stay where they can obtain calories, water and shelter. An ultrasonic emitter does not secure garbage, remove fallen fruit, clean a bird-feeder spill, thin dense vegetation or close a gap under a shed. If those attractants remain, a rat has a reason to tolerate or work around the sound.
Open-air coverage is not a guaranteed circle
Packaging often encourages buyers to think in terms of a simple coverage area. The cited guidance does not validate a universal outdoor radius. Sound can be blocked or redirected by walls, stored materials, thick plants and changes in terrain. A unit mounted on a wall may not project effectively into a burrow, beneath a deck or behind a stack of lumber. A battery-powered product may also produce a different output as its charge declines. Without a standardized field test, a claimed radius cannot be treated as proof that all rat pathways are covered.

Ultrasonic repellers versus control measures that address the cause
| Approach | What the cited evidence supports | Persistence and coverage | Main safety or maintenance issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic repeller | Extension guidance does not support residential sonic devices as dependable rat control. | No reliable current outdoor radius is established. Historical tests found no significant repellency beyond 3–7 days. | Requires power and correct placement, yet does not remove food, shelter or entry points. |
| Sanitation and habitat reduction | University of Georgia calls sanitation the best method of control; Missouri and Georgia guidance emphasize removing food and shelter. | Works as long as attractants are controlled; property-wide rather than limited to one device beam. | Ongoing housekeeping is required, including securing waste and pet food. |
| Exclusion with hardware cloth or rodent-resistant mesh | University of Georgia identifies 1/4-inch-square hardware wire as material that keeps mice and rats outside. | Durable when openings are correctly identified and sealed; protects a building rather than repelling rats from a yard. | Needs inspection for gaps, edges and damage, especially around utilities and doors. |
| Snap traps | University guidance recommends trapping where signs show activity. | Acts at a specific travel route and must be checked and reset until signs stop. | Placement must prevent children, pets and non-target wildlife from triggering the trap. |
| Rodenticide in a bait station | Missouri Extension notes that some products require bait stations for outdoor above-ground use. | Only works while bait remains acceptable and accessible to the target; label directions control use. | Follow the product label and local rules. Stations protect bait from weather and people, pets and other animals. |
A practical outdoor rat-control plan
1. Confirm that the signs are from rats
Look for droppings, gnawing, runways, burrow openings and repeated tracks near food or shelter. Night-time sightings alone are not enough to select a control method. Distinguish rat activity from mice, squirrels or other wildlife before setting traps or using any pesticide.

- Keep garbage in tightly closed containers and clean spills around them.
- Bring pet food and water indoors when they are not being used.
- Pick up fallen fruit, vegetables and spilled birdseed.
- Store animal feed in rodent-resistant containers rather than sacks or open bins.
- Correct leaks and standing water where practical.
Sanitation is not a one-time treatment. A new food source can draw rats back even after trapping has reduced activity.
3. Reduce shelter and travel cover
Remove unnecessary clutter, stacked materials and dense cover close to buildings. Trim vegetation where it touches walls, and keep stored lumber, equipment and debris elevated or organized so the area can be inspected. Do not destroy habitat indiscriminately: the goal is to remove rat shelter and make signs visible while considering other wildlife that may use the property.
4. Seal routes into structures
Inspect the foundation, doors, vents, utility penetrations, crawl-space openings and the underside of sheds. The University of Georgia identifies 1/4-inch-square hardware wire as a material that keeps mice and rats outside. Fit the mesh tightly, fasten its edges and repair gaps rather than placing a sound device nearby. Exclusion protects the building; it is not a claim that mesh repels rats from an open yard.
5. Trap where activity is concentrated
Place rat snap traps along walls, beside runways or near fresh signs, with the trigger positioned where a rat is likely to travel. Use enough traps to cover the active routes rather than relying on one unit in a random location. Set them where children and pets cannot reach them, and account for non-target wildlife outdoors. Check traps frequently and remove captures promptly while wearing appropriate protective equipment and following local public-health guidance.

6. Consider bait only under label control
If rodenticide is necessary, read the complete product label before purchase and use. Missouri Extension notes that some products require bait stations for outdoor above-ground use. A tamper-resistant station can protect bait from rain and reduce access by people, pets and other animals, but it does not eliminate the need to comply with the label, disposal instructions and local requirements. Never scatter loose bait where it can be eaten or carried by non-target animals.
7. Monitor instead of guessing
Record where and when you see signs. Recheck droppings, gnaw marks, burrows and trap activity after each change. If signs continue, revisit sanitation and exclusion before buying another repeller. A continuing food source, an overlooked opening or a neighboring property can sustain activity even when one section of the yard has been cleaned.

Rats visit a compost area
A repeller does not correct an accessible food supply. Use a well-managed, enclosed compost system, keep surrounding material clean and remove other food sources. Trap along the routes leading to the compost area if local rules and safety conditions permit.
Rats appear under a deck or shed
Inspect for burrows and entry gaps, remove clutter and avoid sealing an occupied space until you know animals are not trapped inside. After activity is addressed, install properly fitted mesh to prevent re-entry. A sound emitter cannot close the opening.

The device seemed to work for a week
Check objective signs rather than relying on sightings. A temporary drop in visible activity is consistent with the short-lived effects reported in the 1995 review. Continue inspecting for fresh droppings, gnawing and tracks. If signs return, treat the device as unproven and move to sanitation, exclusion and trapping.
What is and is not established about current products
The available sources support a clear practical conclusion: ultrasonic repellers are not a dependable primary solution for outdoor residential rat control. They do not establish that every current model has been independently tested outdoors, that every unit is ineffective in every circumstance, or that a particular product cannot alter animal movement for a short period.
They also provide no defensible current percentage for yard success, no universally valid coverage radius and no model-by-model performance ranking. Claims using those figures should identify the test conditions, species, exposure time, product version and date. Without that information, a number on a package cannot substitute for field evidence.
Bottom line for a homeowner or property manager
Do not make an ultrasonic device the main plan for rats in an open yard. The evidence and extension recommendations point to a layered approach: remove food and shelter, block access to buildings, trap active routes safely and use rodenticide only when the label and local rules allow it. Those measures address why rats are present and provide observable ways to verify progress.
