Data centre cooling systems compared: air, liquid and immersion cooling

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universally best data-centre cooling system. Air cooling is usually the practical choice for lower-density or mixed-use rooms; direct-to-chip liquid cooling targets high-heat components while retaining some room-air cooling; and immersion cooling captures heat by surrounding equipment with a nonconductive fluid. The right architecture depends on rack density, IT compatibility, climate, heat-rejection plant, water strategy, retrofit scope, service procedures and the level of redundancy your project requires.

This comparison explains the heat path, construction interfaces, operational trade-offs and a selection process for “air vs liquid vs immersion cooling for data centres.”

What the three architectures actually do

Air cooling

Fans move air through servers and across the data hall. That warmed air travels to room- or row-level cooling equipment, where heat is transferred onward to the facility’s heat-rejection system. The architecture is familiar to most facilities teams and can serve conventional servers, storage and networking in the same room.

Performance depends heavily on airflow design rather than on the cooling unit alone. Supply and return paths, hot-aisle or cold-aisle containment, blanking panels and disciplined cable management reduce mixing between conditioned and heated air. ASHRAE guidance also describes direct air economizers, which bring suitable outdoor air into the space, and indirect economizers, which exchange heat without mixing outdoor and data-hall air. Climate, outdoor-air quality, humidity limits and the environmental envelope allowed by the IT equipment determine whether an economizer is appropriate.

The reviewed engineering guidance does not establish a universal rack-density ceiling at which air cooling stops working. A density limit must therefore be established for the specific servers, room layout, supply temperatures and cooling plant rather than assumed from a generic rule.

Direct-to-chip liquid cooling

In a direct-to-chip system, liquid reaches selected high-heat components through cold plates or similar interfaces. A coolant-distribution unit (CDU) separates and manages the technology loop and the facility loop. The CDU typically provides heat exchange, pumps, valves, monitoring and controls before heat is rejected through the building’s cooling system.

This is often a hybrid arrangement. Processors, accelerators or other designated components may be liquid-cooled while memory, power supplies, disks, fans and room loads still release heat to air. The fraction of heat captured by liquid therefore varies with the equipment design. A project must specify the remaining air load instead of treating a liquid connection as permission to remove all room cooling.

Successful deployment requires IT designed or adapted for liquid interfaces, compatible fluid and materials, temperature control, leak detection and a planned connection between the CDU and facility water or another heat-rejection loop. The distribution route, isolation points, filtration and controls become part of the critical infrastructure design.

Immersion cooling

Immersion places equipment wholly or partly in a nonconductive dielectric liquid. The fluid surrounds heat-generating devices, circulates through a tank- or chassis-level system and transfers heat through a coolant-to-water heat exchanger into the facility loop. Because the liquid contacts more of the equipment than a cold plate does, immersion can send nearly all IT heat through the liquid path and reduce the need for auxiliary air infrastructure. The actual reduction depends on the equipment and deployment.

Immersion changes the physical service model. Tanks or vessels, fluid handling, lifting and draining arrangements, materials compatibility, inspection and cleaning procedures must be designed with the IT hardware. Technicians need a defined process for removing equipment from fluid, controlling contamination and restoring the system. Vendor support and the service method are therefore project requirements, not afterthoughts.

Air, direct-to-chip and immersion compared

Decision axis Air Direct-to-chip liquid Immersion
Heat path Airflow through IT and room cooling equipment Liquid captures heat at selected components; room air may remain necessary Nonconductive liquid surrounds equipment and transfers heat through a liquid loop
Equipment fit Conventional air-cooled IT IT designed or adapted for liquid interfaces IT and service processes designed for immersion
Facility integration Air handling, containment and heat rejection CDU, dedicated piping and loops, facility heat exchanger Tank or chassis vessel, dielectric fluid, circulation, heat exchanger and facility loop
Most natural use Lower-density or mixed-density zones where airflow can be controlled High-density components in a hybrid room or a purpose-designed liquid zone Specialised deployments seeking very high liquid heat capture
Resilience issue to examine Airflow path and cooling-plant redundancy Loop redundancy, pumps, controls and backup provisions Fluid thermal mass may provide ride-through during an interruption, but duration depends on system design
Retrofit question Can existing containment and heat rejection handle the load? Can the building accept CDUs, piping, isolation and compatible IT? Can the room, structure, logistics and maintenance process support vessels and fluid?

The table is a decision framework, not a performance ranking. Climate, redundancy, operating temperatures and the proportion of heat captured by liquid can reverse an apparent advantage.

Which system fits your workload and facility?

Start with the heat profile

Inventory the equipment by rack and identify which components create the highest heat flux. A room containing conventional servers and storage may have a very different requirement from a zone dominated by accelerators. For mixed workloads, keeping lower-density racks on air while applying liquid to selected high-density racks can avoid converting the entire room to a new technology.

Specify inlet-temperature limits and allowable liquid temperatures for every equipment class. A cooling method is only suitable when its supply and return conditions remain inside the IT manufacturer’s environmental envelope. Do not select a loop temperature first and hope the hardware will tolerate it.

Check compatibility before designing the plant

  • Air: confirm server airflow direction, containment geometry, filter and humidity requirements, and whether economizer operation is acceptable for the site climate and air quality.
  • Direct liquid: confirm factory liquid connections or an approved adaptation, cold-plate coverage, fluid chemistry, maximum pressure and temperature, and the CDU control and alarm interfaces.
  • Immersion: confirm that the hardware, seals, cables and service tools are rated for the dielectric fluid and that the operating team accepts the tank-level or chassis-level maintenance procedure.

Match the facility heat-rejection system

Liquid systems do not eliminate heat rejection; they change where heat is collected. A CDU or immersion heat exchanger must connect to a facility loop with adequate flow, temperature range, pumps, controls and redundancy. The construction design must show pipe routes, isolation valves, drains, leak detection, access for replacement and the boundary between technology and facility water. Air systems instead concentrate the design effort on air distribution, room units, containment and the heat-rejection equipment serving them.

Consider climate and water boundaries

Economizers can reduce mechanical cooling when outdoor conditions permit, but the benefit depends on climate, humidity and air quality. Liquid cooling can reduce the amount of air that must be moved, yet its water and energy consequences depend on the entire heat-rejection design. Define whether the project boundary includes cooling-tower water, dry coolers, pumps, CDUs, humidification and auxiliary air systems before comparing options.

Retrofitting an air-cooled room

Air improvements are usually centred on containment, airflow balancing, sensor placement and room-unit capacity. A liquid retrofit is more intrusive: compatible IT may be required, piping must reach each CDU or row, and the facility loop needs a defined hydraulic and control interface. Immersion adds vessel installation, dielectric-fluid logistics and a new service workflow. The evidence available for this comparison does not establish a universal retrofit duration or cost; those figures require a site survey and equipment schedule.

Plan maintainability as part of the build

Provide isolation so one CDU, tank or branch can be serviced without taking an entire zone offline. Label supply and return lines, provide sample and drain points where the fluid system requires them, and expose alarms for flow, temperature, pressure and leaks to the building-management system. Immersion projects additionally need documented fluid-transfer, cleaning and component-removal procedures.

Reliability, serviceability and interruption behaviour

Air systems rely on functioning fans, room units, containment and the cooling plant. Redundancy should be assessed across the complete airflow and heat-rejection path, not only by counting cooling units.

Direct-to-chip systems add pumps, valves, CDUs, controls and liquid connections. Evaluate failure modes such as loss of flow, a failed control signal, a leak alarm or an isolated branch. Determine what load can continue on air cooling if the liquid loop is unavailable and how the IT equipment will be throttled or shut down.

Immersion fluid has thermal mass, so a tank can absorb heat for a period during a cooling interruption. The available ride-through time is design-specific and depends on fluid volume, load, starting temperature and control action; it is not a guaranteed duration. Tanks, circulation equipment and heat exchangers still require redundancy and a recovery procedure.

How to use PUE without making a false comparison

Power usage effectiveness (PUE) is calculated as:

PUE = total facility energy ÷ IT equipment energy.

ASHRAE’s Handbook, Chapter 20, defines the metric for operational tracking and cautions against using it to rank different facilities. Its wording is explicit: “It was never intended as a means of comparing the efficiencies of different datacom facilities, because too many conditions, including climate zone and level of redundancy, can affect the number.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use PUE to trend one facility over time, with the same measurement boundary and operating conditions. Do not present a single PUE as proof that air, direct-to-chip or immersion is inherently superior. A fair comparison must also state climate, redundancy, IT load, water boundary, heat-rejection equipment and the portion of the load served by liquid.

A practical selection process

  1. Map the IT load. Record rack-by-rack power, component types, inlet-temperature limits and planned growth.
  2. Divide the space into density zones. Keep mixed or lower-density areas on optimized air where that meets the environmental envelope; identify racks that need component-level or full-liquid treatment.
  3. Define the heat-rejection boundary. Document facility water, dry or evaporative heat rejection, economizer availability, pump energy and auxiliary air loads.
  4. Test equipment compatibility. Obtain written requirements for cold plates, CDUs, immersion fluid, materials, pressures, temperatures and service tooling.
  5. Lay out construction interfaces. Coordinate structural loads, pipe routes, electrical and controls, access, drainage, containment and replacement paths.
  6. Model failure states. Decide what happens after loss of a fan, room unit, pump, CDU, branch, heat exchanger or facility loop, and specify alarms and operating responses.
  7. Compare whole-system outcomes. Assess captured heat, remaining air load, water use, energy, maintainability and expansion—not just a headline PUE.
  8. Commission and trend. Verify temperatures, flows, alarms, containment performance and energy boundaries under representative loads, then use the resulting measurements for ongoing operations.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Assuming a universal density threshold: use the actual server environmental envelope and room design instead of an industry-wide cutoff.
  • Calling a hybrid system “fully liquid”: list components and room loads that remain air-cooled, then size the air system for them.
  • Ignoring the facility loop: include CDUs, heat exchangers, pumps, controls, filtration, isolation and heat rejection in the design boundary.
  • Choosing immersion without an operations plan: document fluid handling, component removal, cleaning, spares and technician training before installation.
  • Comparing PUE across unlike sites: normalize the boundary and disclose climate and redundancy, or restrict the metric to an internal trend.
  • Designing only for normal operation: test loss of liquid flow, air capacity, controls and heat rejection, including the expected IT response.

What is known about cost and comparative efficiency

No current source in this comparison provides prices, total-cost-of-ownership figures, universal rack-density thresholds, comparable site water use or measured retrofit times for all three architectures under the same workload and climate. Those values require a defined equipment list, facility design, redundancy level and vendor proposal.

Accordingly, a project should request like-for-like proposals that state capital works, operating energy, water boundary, maintenance labour, fluid management, replacement parts, commissioning and expansion assumptions. Scenario-specific estimates for artificial-intelligence systems or historical PUE figures should not be presented as average savings for every data centre.
