Do Fans Use a Lot of Electricity? What Different Fans Really Use

A ceiling fan’s electricity use depends on wattage, speed and runtime. Learn how to calculate kWh and cost, and see DOE estimates for several residential fan types.

Usually, a household ceiling fan uses a modest amount of electricity, but the answer changes with fan type, speed and run time. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2015 residential assessment estimated average ceiling-fan use at 132 kWh per year, based on 2,350 operating hours. That is a study benchmark—not a prediction for every fan or home. A furnace or air-conditioning circulation fan can use considerably more.

To estimate your own fan, multiply its wattage by the hours it runs, then divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours (kWh). Multiply that result by your electricity rate to estimate the energy cost. The calculation should use the fan’s wattage at the speed you actually use.

How much electricity do different fans use?

Fan type matters. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2015 assessment gave these average annual energy estimates for selected U.S. residential fan applications. They are assessment averages, not ratings for every appliance.

Fan application Average annual energy Annual operating hours used in the assessment
Ceiling-fan circulation 132 kWh 2,350 hours
Furnace circulation fan 678 kWh 1,870 hours
Central air-conditioning and heat-pump circulation fan 360 kWh 1,000 hours

Source: the Department of Energy’s 2015 Pump and Fan Technology Characterization and R&D Assessment. These categories perform different jobs, so a ceiling fan’s consumption is not a substitute for the energy use of an HVAC circulation fan.

How to calculate a fan’s electricity use and cost

Use this formula:

Watts × hours of use ÷ 1,000 = kWh

Then multiply the kWh by your electricity price per kWh. For example, if a fan draws 50 W and runs for 8 hours, it uses 0.4 kWh. Its estimated cost is 0.4 multiplied by your utility’s per-kWh rate. This example illustrates the calculation only; it is not a claim about a typical fan or electricity price.

  • Use the wattage for the speed you normally run. A fan’s draw can vary by speed.
  • Count actual hours of operation. Runtime can matter as much as wattage.
  • If the fan has a light kit, calculate the lighting separately and add it if you want the total electricity use of the fixture.
  • Include standby draw if you are estimating total use for a fan that remains connected while switched off.

Why ceiling-fan estimates vary

Runtime assumptions are not universal

The DOE’s 2015 assessment used 2,350 operating hours per year for its ceiling-fan estimate. In a separate 2023 proposed-rule analysis, DOE reported a Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory survey mean of 6.45 operating hours per day and modeled use across different speeds. These figures come from analyses with different assumptions and scopes; they should not be combined into a single current estimate for an individual household.

Speed and standby draw also count

DOE’s 2023 proposed-rule analysis modeled ceiling-fan power at high, medium and low speeds and estimated 0.7 W of standby draw for representative standard and hugger fans. The estimate is specific to those representative fans and that analysis, not a guaranteed standby figure for every model. See the 2023 proposed-rule analysis for its assumptions.

What a ceiling fan does—and does not do—for comfort

A ceiling fan moves air across people, creating a wind-chill effect on skin; it does not directly lower the room’s temperature. The Department of Energy says fans can help occupants feel cooler and may allow a higher thermostat setting. Because the comfort benefit is for people in the room, switch the fan off in an unoccupied room unless it is being used for another purpose, such as ventilation. DOE also describes low-speed winter operation with a changed rotation direction. Its consumer guidance discusses possible bill savings, but those depend on household conditions and should not be treated as a guaranteed percentage. See DOE’s renter guidance.

How to compare fans for energy use

When comparing models, look beyond a single wattage figure. The most useful comparison reflects how the fan will actually be used.

  • Compare wattage at the speed you expect to use most.
  • Check airflow relative to power use (airflow per watt), where product information provides it.
  • Consider expected operating hours and any standby draw.
  • Separate motor use from a fan’s light-kit use.

In the DOE’s 2015 analysis, ceiling fans accounted for about 10% of residential fan-related primary energy, while furnace circulation fans were the largest load in the report’s residential fan table. Primary energy includes energy used to deliver electricity, including generation and transmission losses; it is not the same as electricity recorded on a household meter. These are findings from a national analysis, not a current survey of individual homes.
