Yes, a ceiling fan can help reduce cooling costs—but only if its breeze lets you raise the thermostat while staying comfortable. The fan itself uses electricity and does not lower room temperature, so it is not automatically a money-saver. How the bill changes depends on fan wattage and run time, your thermostat setting, cooling system, climate, and electricity rates.
How a ceiling fan can affect your power bill
A ceiling fan moves air across your skin, helping your body shed heat and making you feel cooler. ENERGY STAR sums it up: Ceiling fans cool people, not rooms.
The fan does not reduce the air temperature, so it cannot cool an empty room or replace air conditioning when the room itself needs cooling.
The potential summer saving comes from using that breeze to tolerate a higher air-conditioning setting. ENERGY STAR says that raising the thermostat by two degrees and using a ceiling fan can lower air-conditioning costs by up to 14%. That is an agency estimate, not a guaranteed or typical saving for every home; the page’s publication year is not stated. Your result depends on how much the thermostat changes, how long the fan runs, and how your cooling system and local rates affect consumption.
The fan also adds its own electricity use. Whether the overall effect is a lower bill depends on whether the reduced cooling demand outweighs the fan’s consumption. Without your fan’s wattage, hours of use, thermostat change, and electricity rate, there is no reliable universal dollar figure to apply.

When to run the fan—and when to switch it off
Summer: create a downward breeze
ENERGY STAR advises setting the fan to counterclockwise rotation in summer so it pushes air down and creates a breeze. Use the fan while people are in the room and adjust the thermostat only as far as remains comfortable.
Winter: circulate warm air gently
In winter, ENERGY STAR recommends reversing the motor to clockwise at low speed. The gentle updraft helps move warm air that collects near the ceiling back into occupied space. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that a ceiling fan does not change room temperature, but can help people feel warmer. This circulation is not a substitute for heating the room.

Empty room: turn it off
A fan’s comfort benefit is personal, and it still consumes electricity when nobody is there to feel the airflow. ENERGY STAR’s guidance is direct: If the room is unoccupied, turn off the ceiling fan to save energy.
How to compare fan efficiency
For a meaningful efficiency comparison, look beyond blade appearance or pitch. ENERGY STAR expresses ceiling-fan efficiency as cubic feet per minute per watt (CFM/W), using a weighted measure across multiple speeds and standby. Its minimum efficiency and high-speed airflow requirements vary by fan type and diameter, so compare models of a suitable type and size for the room.

For example, an ENERGY STAR product-finder record for Visual Comfort & Co’s Launceton 44 (model family 4LNCR44*) lists a certification date of March 27, 2025, efficiency of 199 CFM/W, and consumption of 1.9 W at low speed, 29.8 W at high speed, and 0.7 W in standby. Those are figures for that listed model only, not a typical-fan benchmark or an endorsement; check the current record and exact model suffix before buying.
ENERGY STAR says certified ceiling fans are up to 44% more efficient than conventional fans. Its specification lists an effective date of June 15, 2018. This is a product-efficiency comparison, not a promise that an owner’s total power bill will fall by 44%.

What to check before choosing or installing a fan
- Certification and efficiency: Check ENERGY STAR certification and the listed CFM/W figure, rather than relying on marketing descriptions alone.
- Size and airflow: Match the fan diameter and airflow to the room and the fan type. Efficiency minimums and airflow requirements vary with these specifications.
- Power at useful speeds: Compare wattage at the speeds you expect to use, as well as standby consumption.
- Lighting: If you need a light kit, account for its separate energy use when comparing total operation.
- Fit and installation: Check ceiling height, mounting, indoor or outdoor rating, and controls. ENERGY STAR advises using a ceiling-fan-rated electrical box and following the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
Check local rebates
