The proposed DLR extension to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead remains a project in development, not an approved construction scheme. Transport for London (TfL) says its latest consultation feedback did not point to a need for significant changes. TfL plans to apply for a Transport and Works Act Order in 2027, but funding and statutory permissions are still required.

What did the latest DLR consultation find?
TfL published its latest consultation report on 8 October 2026. It recorded 553 responses, including 26 from stakeholder organisations. TfL said: “We do not feel that any issues were raised that mean we need to significantly change the scheme.” That is TfL’s assessment of the feedback, not a construction decision or evidence of borough-wide agreement. Support among consultation respondents
The 2025 consultation figures reported by TfL show the share of respondents who supported parts of the proposal:

These percentages describe consultation respondents, not a representative poll of all residents in either borough. The earlier 2025 consultation received 1,444 responses, including 36 from stakeholder organisations. TfL says feedback—particularly about a potential turnback location and construction concerns—will inform further development. What happens before the project can be built?
TfL says it will continue finalising proposals with government, the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the London Borough of Newham, the Greater London Authority, the Environment Agency, utilities, landowners and developers. It plans to submit a Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) application to the Secretary of State for Transport in 2027. That would be an application for consent; it is not permission already granted to build.

A TWAO application is one of the outstanding steps, alongside a funding agreement with government and the necessary permissions. In a London Assembly answer dated 25 November 2025, the Mayor’s office said discussions with government about the business case and funding approach were ongoing at that time. When could construction start, and when might stations open?
TfL says construction could begin by 2029 and the extension and stations could open in the early 2030s—but only if a funding agreement is reached with government and the necessary permissions are granted. These are conditional, indicative dates, not firm commitments. TfL’s project information

How many homes and jobs could the extension support?
A London Assembly answer dated 25 November 2025 said the scheme could support 25,000 homes and create 10,000 jobs. Those are potential outcomes, not homes already delivered or guaranteed jobs. TfL’s 2024 press release used an earlier estimate of 25,000–30,000 new homes along the extended route; the figures come from different sources and dates.
