DJI Adapted Its Drone Navigation Technology for the ROMO Robot Vacuum—Here’s What That Really Means

DJI’s ROMO robot vacuum genuinely draws on drone-derived sensing, mapping and navigation technology. The important caveat: that means adaptation, not proven hardware transplantation.

Yes, the claim is substantially true—but “repurposed” is shorthand. DJI’s ROMO robot-vacuum family uses sensing, mapping and navigation technology that DJI says is derived from or adapted from its flagship-drone experience. That does not establish that DJI removed an identical obstacle-avoidance module, camera or firmware package from a drone and installed it in a vacuum.

The more accurate description is that DJI transferred drone-derived expertise in perception, sensor fusion, localization and path planning to a ground robot designed for cluttered homes.

What DJI actually brought from drones to ROMO

ROMO combines three important technology layers:

  • Binocular fisheye vision sensors to view and classify objects around the robot.
  • Wide-angle solid-state LiDAR to measure surroundings and support mapping.
  • Navigation and path-planning algorithms adapted from DJI’s experience with autonomous flight and drone mapping.

Together, these systems help ROMO localize itself, build a map, recognize objects and decide whether to pass over, go around or avoid them. DJI describes this as leveraging flagship-drone technology; the available product information does not prove identical drone hardware, processors or software are used in the vacuum.

Why drone expertise transfers to a robot vacuum

Drones and robot vacuums operate in very different physical environments, but they share a core autonomy problem: both must understand their position, interpret a changing environment and move without colliding with obstacles.

  • 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐈 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: With structured light and an RGB camera, the robot intelligently detects and avoids 108 types of objects, seamlessly navigating around obstacles in both well-lit and dark spaces—no need to clear your floor beforehand.
  • 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲-𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬: The Roborock AdaptiLift Chassis technology brings a new level of versatility, allowing the robot to lift its entire chassis to 4cm max or adjust individual sections—front, rear, left, or right—based on the terrain. Whether tackling high thresholds or effortlessly maneuvering around furniture legs, it adapts seamlessly to your home's layout, enabling smooth, uninterrupted cleaning. (roborock was the first in the robot vacuum industry to mass-produce a product featuring a liftable chassis system with three-wheel control, officially launching this technology in Q3 2024.)

A drone navigates three-dimensional space at speed. ROMO moves close to the floor, under furniture and around chair legs, cables, toys, pets and household clutter. It also has to cope with darkness, reflective surfaces and objects partly hidden beneath furniture. That means DJI’s transferable advantage is more likely to be its experience with computer vision, sensor fusion, mapping and route planning than a literal one-for-one drone design.

Which ROMO models use the system?

The initial family includes the ROMO S, ROMO A and ROMO P. DJI’s comparison material lists binocular fisheye vision and wide-angle solid-state LiDAR across the lineup.

  • ROMO S: The entry model, with up to 25,000 Pa suction and anti-tangle roller brushes.
  • ROMO A: Adds a transparent robot design and bristle-rubber brushes.
  • ROMO P: The premium transparent model, with additional cleaning and deodorizing features in the robot and base station.

All three are positioned as all-in-one robot vacuums, with vacuuming, mopping and an automated dock.

What “millimeter-level” obstacle detection means

DJI says ROMO can detect cables as thin as 2 mm in standard mode and obstacles at least 15 mm high. It also says the robot can identify and avoid pet waste. Those are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee that every cable, toy or accident will be detected in every home.

Kilgone Robot Vacuum Self-Emptying, App, Alexa & Google Assistant for Pet Hair, Carpet & Hard Floor
  • Robot Vacuum Self-Emptying, App, Alexa & Google Assistant for Pet Hair, Carpet & Hard Floor

DJI’s own qualifications are important. The advertised results assume conditions including:

  • Matte, textured surfaces rather than highly glossy or transparent ones.
  • Reflectivity above 20%.
  • Ambient light of at least 0.1 lux.
  • Standard operating conditions and compatible firmware.

The 15 mm figure also does not mean every object of that height will be avoided. ROMO may decide that some objects are safe to cross. Thin tangled cables, dark glossy objects, transparent items, partly concealed objects and clutter in very low light remain challenging for vision-based systems.

Does it work in real homes?

Independent testing supports the narrower conclusion that ROMO has unusually capable obstacle avoidance. In its hands-on testing, TechRadar described the ROMO P’s avoidance as exceptional and reported particularly strong performance around household obstacles. A separate TechRadar comparison with the Roborock Saros 10R made a similar observation.

That is evidence that the system can perform well in testing, but it is not proof of a universal market-wide ranking or of an identical drone system transplanted into ROMO. A fair evaluation also needs to consider whether the robot avoids obstacles so conservatively that it leaves uncleaned edges or gaps.

Obstacle avoidance is not the same as cleaning quality

Seeing clutter is only one part of a robot vacuum’s performance. Buyers should also look for evidence about:

  • Pickup on hard floors and carpet.
  • Hair and pet-hair handling.
  • Mopping quality and stain removal.
  • Cleaning along walls and in corners.
  • Noise and dock performance.
  • App reliability and map recovery.
  • Water, detergent and replacement-part consumption.

ROMO’s hardware includes dual extendable cleaning arms for edges and corners, four cleaning modes—Vacuum & Mop, Vacuum, Mop, and Vacuum Then Mop—and an onboard 164 mL water tank. DJI estimates approximately 200 m2 of mopping coverage from a full clean-water tank, although actual coverage depends on settings and the home.

What the dock and app add

DJI lists a high-pressure water-jet system for cleaning the base station’s washboard, plus dust-box drying. Its “up to 200 days of maintenance-free operation” claim applies specifically to washboard cleaning—not to the entire ownership experience. Owners still need to refill clean water, empty waste, replace consumables and perform other maintenance.

The DJI Home app supports cleaning controls and custom plans. ROMO also supports remote video and voice calls. That may be useful for checking on pets or rooms, but it introduces a privacy consideration: a navigation system with cameras can also become a mobile home-monitoring device. Before enabling remote viewing, check account permissions, camera controls, access settings and DJI’s current documentation about footage and telemetry. Those details should not be assumed from the obstacle-avoidance claim alone.

Availability and price vary by country

DJI’s launch material shows regional availability beginning in parts of Asia and Europe, while official store pages also list ROMO products in markets including Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe. As of the regional pages surfaced on August 18, 2026, this research did not establish a standard U.S. DJI Store listing or a confirmed U.S. retail launch. U.S. buyers should check DJI directly rather than relying on a converted foreign price.

Regional snapshots also vary. The Canada-region store pages showed the ROMO S at USD $1,089, the ROMO A at USD $1,309 and the ROMO P at USD $1,339. A UK page showed the ROMO S at a £749 sale price against a £929 reference price, while one European page listed the S, A and P at €1,339, €1,649 and €1,959 respectively. These are territory-specific prices and promotions, not universal MSRPs.

Who should consider ROMO?

ROMO is most compelling for buyers who prioritize obstacle avoidance and premium automation—especially households with pets, children, cables or frequently changing floor layouts. DJI’s drone background gives its navigation claims a credible engineering basis, and independent testing suggests that obstacle avoidance is a genuine strength.

The premium price also puts ROMO against established high-end robot-vacuum brands, so navigation should be weighed alongside vacuuming, mopping, dock hygiene and regional support.

How to interpret the headline

The headline is accurate only if “repurposed” is understood broadly. There is support for saying DJI adapted drone-derived sensing and navigation expertise for ROMO. There is not enough evidence to say that a specific drone obstacle-avoidance module, camera system or firmware was physically moved into the vacuum.

That distinction matters because the home environment demands different tuning. A drone must avoid collisions while flying; a vacuum must make safe, useful cleaning decisions near floors, walls, furniture and fragile household objects. ROMO’s result may be influenced by DJI’s drone experience, but it remains a purpose-built robot vacuum.
