You can make wooden building blocks as simple loose cubes or as interlocking pieces. For a more involved project, a published plan uses half-inch sheet stock and notches cut to a 3-inch grid; the consistent stock thickness is what lets those joints fit. Choose the design around your tools and the child’s age, and treat safety and toy regulations as part of the build—not as a finish-step formality.
Choose a block design before buying lumber
Loose blocks are the simpler route: cut consistent shapes, remove sharp edges, and check each piece. Interlocking blocks add repeatable notches and tighter fit requirements. The documented plan described below is one specific interlocking design, not a universal standard or the only way to make blocks.

For project-specific lumber guidance, the plan’s named options are ash or birch plywood as alternatives to MDF. It does not establish that either option is automatically suitable for every child, finish, or regulatory market. Select flat, sound stock with uniform thickness for the design you choose; for notched pieces, thickness consistency is essential to the specified fit.
What the published interlocking plan specifies
The “Make Your Own Interlocking Toy Blocks” plan uses half-inch sheet stock. Its basic module is a 3-by-3-inch square with notches 0.5 inch wide and 0.75 inch deep. It also describes multiples on a 3-inch grid, including longer rectangles, half-height pieces, and angled pieces. These are dimensions for that design, not general toy-block dimensions.

The plan identifies a table saw and dado blade for making the notches, and a miter saw for crosscuts and angles. It also describes ganging several pieces for repeated cuts, 30-degree angled pieces, small joining pegs, and a small table-saw push aid. These are adult woodworking operations: use the machine manuals’ safe-use instructions and suitable guards and push devices, and keep small cutoffs clear of the blade path. Do not treat a project plan as a safety standard.
Plan the build around fit and repeatability
- Choose a design and intended age. Decide whether the set will be loose blocks or interlocking pieces, then choose sizes and shapes with the child’s age and use in mind.
- Select stock and confirm thickness. For the cited plan, use half-inch sheet stock and keep every piece the same thickness so the notches fit. The plan names ash or birch plywood as alternatives to MDF.
- Lay out the pattern. For the cited design, use the 3-inch grid and the specified 0.5-inch-wide by 0.75-inch-deep notches. Mark pieces before cutting so repeated parts remain consistent.
- Make cuts with appropriate equipment. Follow the saw and dado blade manufacturers’ instructions. The plan’s ganging and push-aid techniques should be undertaken only by an experienced adult who can safely manage the setup and workpiece.
- Inspect every piece. Check for splinters, sharp points or edges, loose or broken parts, and fit. A smooth appearance alone does not establish that a toy is safe or compliant.
Account for child safety and toy rules
Small-part hazards are especially important when a toy is intended for a child under three. In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says toys intended for children 12 and under require third-party testing and a Children’s Product Certificate for applicable rules. ASTM F963-23 became effective April 20, 2024; which provisions apply depends on the toy’s materials and functions. A homemade set is not certified simply because it is made of wood. The CPSC FAQ lists unfinished and untreated wood under a specific substrate testing exemption. That is limited guidance about a material category, not blanket approval of a finished toy, its dimensions, coatings, or intended use. The CPSC notes: “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to the toy standard.”
For broader mechanical and physical safety context, ISO 8124-1:2022 addresses structural features such as shape, size, contours, small parts, sharp points, and edges, with requirements that vary by intended age group. Requirements differ by country. In Great Britain—England, Scotland, and Wales—the government’s designated toy safety standards page lists a consolidated update dated February 17, 2026; check the live page for current requirements. Do not assume compliance in one market establishes compliance elsewhere.

A UK government report from October 2022 described a specific 10-piece wooden magnetic cube set that presented choking and internal injury risks because the cubes were small parts and some magnets had excessive magnetic flux; authorities required withdrawal. That case concerns that magnetic product, not ordinary nonmagnetic wooden blocks, but it illustrates why age, small parts, and product features matter in a safety assessment.
