There is no single TPD or direction that fits every watch. The available project discussion does not establish a complete, verified build plan or parts list, so this guide focuses on the configuration decisions you can make reliably.
Find the right TPD and direction for your watch
Start with the watch’s make and exact model, then look up the winding specification for its movement. WOLF 1834 says each timepiece has a TPD requirement and directs owners to its winding specification database for the recommended TPD and direction. Use the specification for your particular watch rather than treating a general setting as universal.
- Identify the watch precisely. Record its brand and model; if the maker identifies the movement separately, record that too.
- Check an authoritative winding specification. Look up the model’s recommended TPD and direction. If the exact model is not listed, consult the watch manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker instead of guessing.
- Configure the winder to match. Set both the daily turns and rotation direction to the watch-specific recommendation. If a specification is unclear or unavailable, do not assume that a setting for another watch applies.
WOLF’s guidance supports model-specific lookup, not one average TPD for all automatic watches. No universal number is established here.
Why direction is a separate setting
Winding direction is not just a motor preference. A winder must be able to run in the direction required by the watch, and some programmable commercial winders offer clockwise, counter-clockwise, and bidirectional modes. WOLF describes these options in its programmable watch winder instructions. Select the mode that matches the specification for your watch; do not assume bidirectional operation is correct for every movement.

What this means for a DIY build
Before selecting a mechanism or controls, write down the required TPD and direction for the watch. Those are the configuration requirements the finished device needs to meet. A design that cannot control both appropriately is not a suitable match for that watch.
A public Reddit discussion describes an open-source watch-winder project, but it does not verify a complete, currently usable bill of materials or tested build procedure; a commenter also reported broken parts-list links. Treat it as an informal project lead, not as a validated construction plan. See the project discussion.

Safe handling during operation
Stop rotation before installing or removing the watch. WOLF’s programmable-winder instructions state: “Never insert or remove your watch when the drum is rotating.” Follow that handling instruction for a winder with a rotating drum, and use its controls to confirm the drum has stopped before touching the watch.

DIY or buy a programmable winder?
Choose DIY if you have a complete design you can verify and can configure it for your watch’s TPD and direction. Choose a commercial programmable automatic watch winder if you would rather use a documented product with selectable direction modes. Buying does not remove the need to look up your watch’s own settings: use the model-specific guidance above, then set the winder accordingly.
