A programmable DIY thundercloud lamp needs three things: a lightweight cloud-shaped support, LEDs hidden behind a diffuser, and a controller that can animate the light. For a straightforward thunder effect, use addressable WS2812B LEDs, a NodeMCU ESP8266, and a correctly matched 5 V supply. If you want a simpler craft light rather than programmable lightning, a cotton-wool cloud mobile with a battery-operated LED tealight is an easier alternative.
Choose a build style before buying parts
The frame and lighting determine how much electronics work the project needs. Pick the approach that suits the intended size, appearance, and level of control.

The detailed build steps below follow the programmable wire-frame route. A layered frame is another documented way to support LEDs and diffuse them with fiberfill; leave access to the controls and power connection, as in Adafruit’s example.
Gather parts and tools for the programmable version

The cited tutorials establish these as parts used in their particular builds, not as a universal wiring diagram or compatibility guarantee. Confirm the current instructions for your selected board and LEDs, and match the supply to the design before connecting power.

Cloud materials and tools
- About 1 mm metal wire for the support frame
- Parchment or butter paper
- Raw cotton in thin layers
- Pliers, scissors, soldering iron, and hot-glue gun
Hackster’s author describes a personal lamp under 60 cm long and estimates its materials weigh about 200–250 g. Those figures describe that project only; they are not a recommended size, a tested load rating, or evidence that a ceiling attachment can support a particular cloud.
Build the cloud and hide the LEDs
- Shape the support. Bend metal wire into a cloud outline and add crosspieces to hold the shape. The frame supports the covering and lighting; size and reinforcement depend on your design.
- Plan access. Decide where the controller and power connection will sit before covering the frame. Keep them reachable rather than sealing them beneath cotton.
- Fit the LEDs. Secure the addressable LEDs to the frame and arrange them to distribute light through the cloud. Follow the wiring and mounting instructions for the exact strip and controller you use.
- Add a diffuser. Cover the frame with parchment or butter paper, then attach thin layers of cotton so the LEDs are softened rather than left exposed. Avoid obscuring or packing fluff around damaged wiring or components.
- Check the finished structure. Inspect the covering, wiring, and attachment points before hanging or powering the lamp. The cited project estimates its own weight but does not provide an engineered hanging specification.
Connect and animate the lighting
Addressable LEDs allow individual pixels or groups to show changing colors and patterns, which is what makes a programmable thunder effect possible. The Hackster tutorial pairs WS2812B LEDs with a NodeMCU ESP8266 and describes choosing patterns through the LEDfx app. It gives Hyper Sparkle as one example, with controls for effect, color, speed, brightness, and duration. App interfaces and compatibility can change, so use the current instructions for the software and hardware you select.

Do not assume every WS2812B strip, NodeMCU board, or 5 V supply can be combined without checking its requirements. Use the build instructions for your specific parts, keep the power connection accessible, and do not power a circuit that has not been inspected.
Choose the simpler battery-light option when appropriate
For a decorative cloud without app control or animated lightning, the Scouts UK mobile uses cotton wool and a battery-operated LED tealight. The activity also lists a toilet tube, yarn, paper, tape, PVA glue, scissors, and a hole punch. This route avoids a programmable controller build, but it produces a simple illuminated mobile rather than an addressable-LED effect.

Work safely around the wiring and batteries
Scouts UK advises assessing risk and providing appropriate supervision for its activity. Its guidance also applies as sensible practice when assembling a craft with electronics:
- Disconnect equipment from power before working on it.
- Inspect the circuit before reconnecting power; replace damaged equipment and do not overload it.
- Ensure electronics are properly grounded, following the requirements for the equipment being used.
- Keep electrical components and wiring accessible for inspection instead of covering damage with cotton or fiberfill.
- For a battery-operated light, ensure the battery compartment is secure and undamaged. Button and coin batteries can cause severe harm if swallowed or inserted; supervise children and keep loose batteries away from them.
The cited sources do not establish that a cotton-covered, ceiling-mounted LED cloud has been fire-tested or certified. Do not treat this DIY covering as fire-safe or as a certified lighting fixture.
