You can repurpose an EV battery for off-grid energy storage, but it is not a plug-and-play battery. The pack must be individually assessed, its battery-management system (BMS) and inverter controls must be compatible, and the complete installation must meet applicable safety requirements and local approvals. Do not connect an unknown EV pack to a solar inverter by guesswork.

Can an old EV battery power an off-grid system?

Potentially. A retired vehicle battery can have a second life in stationary storage, but its suitability depends on the condition and history of that specific pack and on whether the rest of the system can control and protect it. An EV battery is not automatically compatible with a home or workshop solar installation just because both use lithium-ion batteries.

There is no reliable general figure for a used pack’s remaining capacity, runtime, DIY cost, or payback. Those depend on the individual battery and the system design. A pack’s original vehicle range or nominal energy rating does not establish how much energy it can safely deliver now.

What should be established before choosing a donor pack?

Evaluate the pack as a complete candidate system, not just by its purchase price or advertised kilowatt-hours. UL’s guidance on repurposing describes inspection, BMS-data review where available, examination, grading, rejection, and appropriate disposal as parts of a controlled evaluation process. Its central point is that batteries have different use histories and need individual assessment. UL Solutions’ guidance on EV battery repurposing does not mean that a repurposing process certifies a particular pack for your installation.

  • Identity and history: Establish the exact pack or module, verified chemistry, and credible information about its use and condition. Missing or uncertain history is a risk factor, not a reason to assume the battery is healthy.
  • Condition and data: Have a qualified evaluator inspect physical integrity and review available BMS data. Damage, inconsistent data, or rejected components require appropriate handling; they are not problems to work around by bypassing protections.
  • Electrical operating range: Confirm the pack or module voltage and usable operating range from reliable documentation and evaluation. The voltage range must suit the charging equipment and inverter throughout operation, not just at one nominal value.
  • BMS and thermal management: Identify the BMS, its control and communication requirements, and the pack’s cooling or heating needs. Determine whether those requirements can be supported by the intended installation.
  • System and site fit: Assess enclosure, location, fault protection, system compatibility, approvals, and total installed cost. A low-cost battery can still require substantial evaluation, controls, protective equipment, and installation work.

Why can’t you connect the pack directly to a solar inverter?

A photovoltaic (PV) inverter is not necessarily a battery inverter, and a solar label does not establish compatibility with an EV pack. UL warns that combining a PV inverter and lithium battery without verifying compatibility with the battery bank and BMS can create fire and electric-shock hazards. The required charging, discharging, protection, control, and communication functions must work together for the exact equipment. UL’s inverter guidance explains the compatibility issue; its discussion of earlier National Electrical Code editions is not a substitute for checking the code adopted where you are building.

For an off-grid design, the battery, BMS, inverter/charger, and any associated controls need a compatible operating and protection strategy. Confirm the inverter’s permitted battery voltage and current ranges, fault-current requirements, BMS communications, and system listing or certification with the equipment manufacturer and a qualified integrator. Do not assume that a standalone battery-management product or a generic inverter can safely control an unidentified pack. UL’s energy storage system overview distinguishes battery and complete-system evaluation, including charging and discharging, protection, control, and communication.

What makes the installation a safety and construction issue?

Lithium-ion battery failures can involve thermal runaway, rapid pressure build-up, and toxic gases. These hazards make the enclosure and installation location part of the design, not finishing details. The UK government’s domestic battery energy storage systems report reviews these risks. A National Laboratory of the Rockies case study describes a safe installation of a second-life system, but it is a specific research installation, not a general home-installation recipe. Read the case study.

Before construction or retrofit work proceeds, have the responsible professionals assess the battery location, enclosure, separation from other building elements and hazards, ventilation, detection, emergency access and response, and any required fire-safety measures. The right measures depend on the equipment, building, site, and local rules; do not infer a safe layout from a different project.

Which standards and approvals may apply?

Different standards address different parts of the job. UL describes UL 1974 as addressing repurposing processes, UL 1973 as a standard for stationary-use batteries, and UL 9540 as covering energy storage systems and equipment. UL 9540A is a test method for evaluating thermal-runaway fire propagation, not an installation guide. UL’s repurposing guidance and UL’s ESS testing and certification overview explain those distinctions.

Standard or process What it addresses What it does not establish by itself
UL 1974 Processes for evaluating and repurposing batteries, including inspection, data analysis, grading, and rejection. That an individual DIY pack or the finished installation is suitable or approved.
UL 1973 Battery safety for stationary and related applications. That the inverter, controls, enclosure, and site form a compliant complete system.
UL 9540 The energy storage system and equipment, including charging and discharging, protection, control, and communication. Permission to install a particular system at a particular site under local rules.
UL 9540A A test method for evaluating thermal-runaway fire propagation. A DIY design or installation procedure.
NFPA 855 Installation of stationary energy storage systems. NFPA’s page lists the 2026 edition; local adoption, amendments, and errata must be checked. That every jurisdiction has adopted the same edition or will approve a specific second-life system.

Check the locally adopted electrical and fire codes, permit requirements, and the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) before buying or installing equipment. UL notes that code editions and certification treatment change over time, so an older code discussion does not determine what is legally required at your site. A 2026 National Laboratory of the Rockies case study notes that approval for an unlisted second-life system may involve an equivalency process with the AHJ; that research-project example is not a guarantee of approval for a home installation.

How do NMC and LFP compare for this use?

Nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) are common lithium-ion chemistries in stationary storage. UK government guidance written mainly for grid-scale systems describes trade-offs in energy and power density, availability, cost, and safety. It says LFP typically has better thermal stability than NMC, but chemistry alone cannot establish whether a used pack is safe or suitable for a small off-grid project. See the UK guidance and its stated scope.

Compare actual candidate packs using verified chemistry, voltage and operating range, condition and traceable history, available BMS data and communications, thermal-management needs, physical integrity, inverter and charger compatibility, fault protection, certification and local approval, and total installed cost. Do not treat chemistry, a seller’s capacity claim, or a lower asking price as a substitute for pack evaluation.

What is a responsible path from idea to decision?

  1. Identify the exact battery. Obtain reliable pack or module identification, chemistry, voltage information, and whatever service and use history is available.
  2. Arrange an individual evaluation. Use a qualified second-life battery evaluator to inspect the pack, review available BMS data, assess condition, and determine whether it should be accepted or rejected.
  3. Confirm a compatible system design. Have an experienced battery-storage integrator verify the BMS, inverter/charger controls, operating limits, communications, and fault-protection strategy for the specific pack.
  4. Obtain site and authority review. Confirm location, enclosure and hazard controls, applicable standards, permits, insurance implications, and AHJ acceptance before committing to construction.
  5. Proceed only with a documented, professionally reviewed plan. If pack identity, condition, controls, compatibility, or approval cannot be established, do not use that pack for the project.

This is a decision framework, not instructions for opening or rewiring a high-voltage vehicle battery. Do not bypass the OEM BMS, defeat contactors or interlocks, or improvise high-current connections.
