Yes—but only as an experimental project. A homemade heat pipe can demonstrate passive two-phase heat transfer, but a dependable device for a computer, vehicle, building system, or safety-critical application requires vacuum processing, a properly designed wick, a measured fluid charge, compatible materials, leak-tight sealing, and controlled testing. For most practical cooling jobs, buying a commercial heat pipe or complete thermal assembly is the sensible choice.
What a heat pipe actually is
A heat pipe is not simply a copper tube with water inside. It is a sealed, evacuated thermal device containing a compatible working fluid, a liquid-return structure called a wick, and an open vapor core.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Heat enters the evaporator, where liquid in the wick evaporates. The vapor travels through the core to the cooler condenser, releases latent heat as it condenses, and returns through the wick to the evaporator. The cycle repeats without a mechanical pump. See Eaton’s heat-pipe overview for the basic construction and operating cycle.
Recommended Free Tools
- Evaporator: the heat-input zone.
- Transport or adiabatic section: carries vapor toward the condenser and liquid back toward the evaporator.
- Condenser: rejects heat to a heat sink, air stream, coolant, or other environment.
- Wick: returns liquid by capillary action.
- Vapor core: an unobstructed passage for low-resistance vapor flow.
- Fill tube: a temporary service connection used for evacuation and charging before final sealing.
A solid copper rod conducts heat through metal. An ordinary hollow tube containing air or an arbitrary quantity of water does not automatically perform like a heat pipe. The vacuum, fluid, wick, geometry, and seal are the device—not optional refinements.

Heat pipe versus thermosyphon
A wickless sealed tube may work as a thermosyphon. In that arrangement, vapor rises to the condenser and gravity returns condensate to the evaporator. The condenser generally must be above the evaporator.
A true capillary heat pipe uses a wick to pump liquid back, allowing operation in horizontal or counter-gravity orientations when the wick is designed for it. Calling a gravity-dependent thermosyphon a universal heat pipe is misleading. The distinction matters for laptops, vehicles, mobile equipment, and any installation whose orientation changes. General background is available from Eaton and this heat-pipe demonstration from Idaho State University.
Is a DIY heat pipe practical?
| Goal | Most suitable approach |
|---|---|
| Demonstrate phase-change heat transfer | A demonstration unit or simple, low-load prototype |
| Move modest heat a short distance | Usually a commercial copper-water heat pipe |
| Build a solar or gravity-driven experiment | A wickless thermosyphon, if its orientation is fixed |
| Cool a CPU or GPU | A compatible commercial cooler or replacement assembly |
| Learn vacuum and thermal engineering | A carefully instrumented prototype |
| Transfer substantial heat against gravity | A properly designed commercial heat pipe or loop heat pipe |
| Make a production-quality device | Professional fabrication, leak testing, and qualification |
DIY construction is worthwhile when the objective is learning, experimentation, or an unusual geometry that justifies the effort. It is rarely a cost-effective route to reliable electronics cooling. Commercial manufacturers control wick porosity, evacuation, charging, forming, sealing, leak testing, and life qualification in ways that are difficult to reproduce in a casual workshop.

Materials and equipment
Copper tubing
For a moderate-temperature water experiment, clean copper tubing is the most accessible starting envelope. Copper conducts heat well, is relatively easy to cut and form, and is commonly paired with water. The tube should be structurally sound and free of oil, flux, loose oxide, deep scratches, and other contamination.
Thin plumbing tubing may be easy to obtain but can deform during bending or evacuation and may be difficult to seal reliably. Copper is not appropriate for every working fluid or temperature. Other designs use aluminum, stainless steel, nickel alloys, or refractory metals, but material and fluid compatibility must be evaluated as a system. Useful compatibility guidance is available from Eaton and Mersen.
The wick
Commercial heat pipes use axial grooves, screen mesh, sintered powder metal, and other structures. A first experimental build is most likely to use copper screen mesh because it is accessible and can be inserted into a tube.
The mesh must contact the inner wall sufficiently to return liquid while leaving a usable vapor passage. Too much mesh restricts vapor movement; too little, poor wall contact, or a loose roll may cause dry-out or inconsistent results. The wick is not simply packing material to stuff into the tube.
Sintered copper powder can provide stronger capillary pumping and is useful for compact or counter-gravity designs, but it requires controlled powder placement, sintering, temperature control, and often a controlled atmosphere. It is not a casual substitute for mesh. Research examples discussing mesh and sintered structures include this copper-mesh prototype study and this study of sintered-wick construction.

Working fluid
For a copper prototype operating around room temperature or at moderate electronics temperatures, distilled or deionized water is the most defensible starting point. Water has useful latent heat and surface tension and is commonly used in copper heat pipes. Its suitable operating range is design-dependent: Eaton describes water use in suitable designs from approximately 5°C to 250°C, while Advanced Cooling Technologies describes typical copper-water operation around 20°C to 150°C. These figures are not universal safe limits.
The fluid must be compatible with the tube, wick, seals, and intended temperature range. It should be as free as practical from dissolved gases and contamination. Published experimental work uses cleaning, evacuation, measured charging, and, in some cases, degassed deionized water to reduce non-condensable gas and corrosion effects. See this research discussion of degassed water.
Do not treat ammonia, refrigerants, methanol, acetone, alcohols, sodium, or other fluids as casual alternatives. They introduce combinations of pressure, toxicity, flammability, corrosion, or high-temperature hazards. Industrial and research heat pipes may use them, but they are poor default choices for an informal home build.

The following is a conceptual build sequence, not a universal recipe. Tube dimensions, wick dimensions, vacuum level, charge, and sealing method must be designed and verified for the particular assembly.
1. Define the heat load and orientation
Decide how much heat the evaporator must accept, how much condenser area is available, what heat sink will remove the heat, and whether the pipe must work horizontally or against gravity. These decisions determine the diameter, length, wick, fluid, and test plan.
2. Form the envelope before charging
Cut and deburr the tube. Remove burrs that could damage the wick or obstruct the fill connection. Perform bends and flattening before final evacuation and charging whenever possible. Bending after charging can damage the wick, collapse the vapor passage, redistribute liquid, and reduce heat transport.
Advanced Cooling Technologies lists common copper-water diameters including 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 mm, as well as 1/8-, 1/4-, 3/8-, and 1/2-inch sizes. Its approximate guidance is a bend radius greater than three times the outside diameter and flattening to about two-thirds of the original outside diameter, but those are design guides rather than universal limits. See the ACT design guide.

Cut the mesh to the documented length and form it so it contacts the wall without filling the entire cross-section. Record the mesh type, pore or mesh dimensions, number of layers, compression, wick length, and whether it covers the full pipe or only the evaporator.

One published low-cost prototype used a copper tube approximately 280 mm long, 6 mm outside diameter, and 4.4 mm inside diameter, with copper mesh around 130 micrometres in mesh width and 70 micrometres in wire diameter. Those values describe one research prototype, not a general DIY specification. Do not assume that copying its dimensions will reproduce its performance.
4. Add a fill and evacuation connection
A controlled build needs a service path for evacuation and charging. Published designs connect a small copper fill tube or connector to a vacuum system and seal it after charging.
A rubber hose, plastic fitting, threaded plug, or adhesive may be useful temporarily in an experiment, but should not be regarded as a permanent vacuum seal. A finished device normally requires a properly executed metal seal, brazed joint, welded joint, or another qualified closure method.
5. Clean and dry everything
Remove oil, flux, fingerprints, particulates, and cleaning residue from the internal volume. Dry the tube and wick thoroughly. Water or solvent trapped in the wick can release vapor or gas later and make an apparently good vacuum misleading.
Laboratory cleaning may involve solvents, acid treatments, rinsing, and controlled drying. Those processes require appropriate chemical handling, ventilation, protective equipment, and waste disposal; do not improvise hazardous cleaning chemistry in a kitchen or poorly ventilated workshop.
6. Leak-test before charging
Check the empty assembly before investing time in a charge. Vacuum decay monitoring with a suitable gauge can reveal pressure rise. Professional work may use helium leak testing. Bubble or submersion testing can be appropriate for a low-pressure integrity check, but a simple gauge reading is not proof of long-term leak tightness.
7. Evacuate the dry assembly
Use a suitable vacuum pump, gauge, hoses, and fittings. The required pressure depends on the fluid, geometry, contamination, temperature, and design. Published low-cost and research methods use different vacuum equipment and pressure levels, so no single number should be presented as a guarantee.
The essential objective is removal of air and other non-condensable gases. Residual gas can occupy the condenser, increase thermal resistance, and prevent proper condensation. Chemical reactions can also generate gas during service. Eaton discusses these failure mechanisms in its heat-pipe troubleshooting guidance.

8. Charge a measured amount
Introduce a measured quantity of compatible fluid through a controlled filling arrangement while maintaining the intended vacuum condition. There is no defensible universal rule such as “fill it one-quarter full.” Charge depends on internal volume, wick volume, operating temperature, orientation, and required liquid inventory.
Too little fluid can produce dry-out. Too much can flood the vapor path and restrict vapor transport. A tube filled with an arbitrary amount of water and sealed is not a properly designed heat pipe.
9. Seal the fill tube safely
Close the fill connection only after the target charge and vacuum condition have been achieved. The closure must remain leak-tight and must not introduce flux, oxidized debris, solder contamination, or excessive heat into the active volume.

Internal pressure changes as temperature changes, and an improperly evacuated or overheated tube can become substantially pressurized. Never casually seal a hot tube, use an improvised plug as a permanent closure, or rely on adhesive for a hot working-fluid vessel.
How to test a prototype
“Put one end in hot water” is a demonstration, not a useful qualification test. A credible test controls heat input, condenser cooling, mounting, orientation, and measurement locations.
Minimum test setup
- A controlled heater or heat source.
- A heat sink or controlled coolant at the condenser.
- Temperature sensors at the evaporator, transport section, and condenser.
- Repeatable mounting pressure and thermal interface materials.
- A way to estimate or measure heat input.
- A test stand allowing several orientations.
- Shielding from accidental contact with hot metal and electrical hazards.
Start at a low heat load and increase it gradually. Record the time to steady state, evaporator temperature, condenser temperature, temperature difference along the pipe, ambient temperature, sink temperature, orientation, and whether the pipe recovers after an overload.
For context, compare the prototype with a solid copper tube or rod of similar dimensions and with a commercial heat pipe of similar diameter and length. Keep contact area, heat source, condenser, mounting pressure, and sensor positions as similar as possible. A heat pipe may show a small temperature drop over its transport section, but that result cannot be generalized into a universal “hundreds of times more conductive than copper” claim. Effective thermal conductivity varies with geometry, orientation, heat load, and operating condition.

| Symptom | Likely causes |
|---|---|
| Both ends heat almost equally | No effective phase-change cycle, poor condenser cooling, gas contamination, or poor thermal contact |
| Hot end rapidly overheats | Dry-out, inadequate wick, too little fluid, excessive heat load, or unfavorable orientation |
| Works only vertically | Gravity-assisted return or a wick too weak for the required orientation |
| Works briefly, then degrades | A leak, non-condensable gas, contamination, charge migration, or corrosion |
| Tube bulges or a seal fails | Unsafe pressure, overheating, tube damage, or poor sealing |
| Performance changes after bending | Wick damage, liquid redistribution, or a collapsed vapor path |
At higher heat loads, heat pipes encounter capillary, sonic, entrainment, and boiling limits. Capillary failure occurs when the wick cannot return liquid quickly enough; the evaporator dries out and the cycle collapses. More information on capillary design is available from Mersen and on general transport limits from IEEE TechNav.

Safety
Use eye protection, gloves appropriate to the task, ventilation for soldering and brazing fumes, and a controlled work area. Copper edges are sharp; heated metal causes burns; vacuum equipment can fail; and electrical heaters can ignite nearby materials.
Do not experiment with flammable fluids near torches, heating elements, sparks, or uncontrolled electrical equipment. Do not use ammonia, refrigerants, acetone, alcohols, or alkali metals as beginner working fluids. Avoid lead solder where the assembly may be handled frequently, heated, or used around food or potable water.
Do not rely on a low-pressure reading to assume that a heated sealed device cannot become dangerous. If the tube is damaged, contaminated, incorrectly charged, or heated beyond its intended range, pressure and failure behavior can change. Stop testing if the tube bulges, the seal deforms, temperatures run away, or the device behaves unpredictably.
When buying is better than building
Buy a commercial heat pipe or complete heat-pipe cooler when you need known dimensions, repeatable heat capacity, long service life, reliable orientation performance, or computer and electronics protection. A legitimate product should provide some combination of dimensions, working-fluid class, orientation guidance, heat-load data, temperature range, and manufacturer specifications.
Advanced Cooling Technologies offers standard and custom heat pipes with published design guidance. Eaton provides industrial and custom thermal-management solutions. Cofan Thermal publishes information on standard dimensions and screen-mesh constructions. Mersen is useful for design and material-selection guidance, while Heat Pipe Technology focuses on larger industrial, HVAC, heat-recovery, and custom applications. Availability and pricing vary, and engineering suppliers commonly quote rather than display retail prices.
When selecting a component, check:
- Outside diameter and total length.
- Evaporator and condenser lengths.
- Heat-transport capacity and intended heat load.
- Orientation and gravity limits.
- Bend and flattening geometry.
- Operating temperature range.
- Envelope and working-fluid compatibility.
- Whether it is a bare pipe or a complete heat-sink assembly.
- Whether a datasheet is provided.
- Whether custom dimensions are supported.
Alternatives to a homemade heat pipe
- Commercial heat pipe: the simplest route to predictable passive heat transport.
- Thermosyphon: suitable for a fixed installation where gravity can return liquid.
- Copper heat spreader: useful for distributing heat over a nearby area without phase change.
- Extruded or finned heat sink: appropriate when the heat source and air path are close together.
- Water-cooling loop: better when a pump, radiator, and flexible routing are acceptable.
- Vapor chamber: useful for spreading heat across a broad, thin footprint.
- Complete heat-pipe cooler: the practical choice for CPUs, GPUs, and similar electronics.
Bottom line
A DIY heat pipe is feasible as a low-load laboratory or educational prototype. The minimum credible design needs a compatible envelope and fluid, an effective wick, a vapor space, a clean and dry interior, controlled evacuation, a measured charge, a vacuum-tight metal seal, and thermal testing across the intended orientations and heat loads.
If the goal is to learn, build and instrument one carefully. If the goal is to cool valuable electronics or make a reliable production component, buy a specified commercial heat pipe or complete thermal assembly instead.
