A rustic garden well can be a purely decorative focal point, a planter, or both. Decide which role yours will serve before choosing its size and materials: a soil-filled base needs drainage and a sturdier frame than a hollow decorative one. There is no universal dimensioned plan for this project, so base the proportions and cuts on your chosen design and the space where it will stand.
Choose the well’s purpose, scale, and silhouette
Start with the job the structure needs to do. A decorative-only well can use a closed or open base without carrying soil. A wishing well planter needs a base that drains and a frame capable of supporting wet growing medium. A combination design can look like a well while using a separate, removable planter insert.
- Compact footprint: suits a small garden or path edge; keep the roof and supports in proportion to the base.
- Larger focal point: creates more visual presence, but needs more material and a stable, level location.
- Simple pitched roof: gives the familiar well silhouette with a straightforward shape.
- Decorative roof: a hexagonal or otherwise detailed roof adds visual interest, but requires a design-specific layout and cuts.
- Reused or new lumber: reclaimed material can add character, but inspect it and confirm it is suitable for the intended use, especially if soil will touch it.
Sketch the footprint, overall height, roof outline, and support placement before buying or cutting lumber. Use the site and the selected design to set dimensions; dimensions for raised beds or unrelated planter projects are not garden-well specifications.
Choose outdoor-suitable materials
Cedar and redwood are decay-resistant wood options for outdoor projects. Compare availability, appearance, durability, and cost where you live. Other materials may suit the design, but select them with their exposure to weather and, for a planter, contact with soil in mind. Iowa State University Extension advises securing planter walls against bowing or outward movement and keeping the top level; these are useful construction principles, not a garden-well cut list.

- Lumber suited to outdoor exposure, selected for the chosen design
- Exterior-rated screws and, where the design calls for them, metal brackets or straps
- Roof material and outdoor paint or stain, if desired
- For planter use: a suitable growing medium and permeable landscape fabric only if needed to retain it
- Tape measure, level, saw, drill/driver, and eye protection
Do not use recycled tires or wood treated with creosote or pentachlorophenol, such as railroad ties, for a growing bed. The University of Delaware Cooperative Extension states: “DO NOT USE recycled tires or lumber treated with creosote or pentachlorophenol, such as railroad ties.” Oklahoma State’s bunker-planter demonstration uses a tire, but that is not a reason to use tires as a soil-contacting food-growing bed. If considering reclaimed or treated material, verify its suitability for your intended use with local guidance.
Build the base and supports for stability
Use the sequence below as a planning framework, not as a dimensioned engineered plan. Set the exact lengths, joinery, and fasteners from your chosen design. Oklahoma State University Extension’s bunker-planter instructions and Iowa State’s raised-bed guidance support transferable practices such as working on a level site, measuring carefully, fastening walls securely, and reinforcing against movement.

- Prepare the site. Choose a firm location and level the ground where the well will sit. Check the area before assembly so the finished structure does not rock or lean.
- Assemble the base. Cut and join the base pieces to the footprint in your sketch. Check it for square and level before adding the sides.
- Attach the sides or vertical slats. Fasten them securely to the base. If using brackets or straps, place them where they help resist the sides spreading or shifting.
- Install the upright supports. Set the roof supports in their planned positions and fasten them firmly to the base or sides. Check that they are aligned before fitting the roof.
- Add the roof. Assemble the pitched or more decorative roof to match the supports and your selected design. Do not assume a roof shape has standard dimensions; fit its pieces to the structure you built.
- Finish the details. Add an optional decorative crank and handle, then apply outdoor paint or stain if wanted, following the product directions.
Follow the tool maker’s instructions and wear suitable eye protection when cutting or drilling. Oklahoma State Extension’s project instructions also call for eye protection when using power tools.
Adapt the base for a planter
A planter base needs a route for excess water to escape. Add appropriate drainage openings or another drainage route before filling it. Landscape fabric can help retain growing medium while allowing water through, but it does not replace drainage. Use a light, well-drained growing medium suited to the plants; Iowa State Extension recommends well-drained soil for raised-bed planters.

Plan for the load before adding soil. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach cautions: “Build these elevated gardens with sturdy materials, as the soil and plants can get heavy, especially after being watered.” Reinforce the frame and supports accordingly, and do not fill a decorative structure unless it was built to carry that weight.
If the well is only meant to look like a planter, a separate container inside the frame can make planting and maintenance easier. Keep its drainage functional and ensure water does not collect in the surrounding wooden base.

Check the finished structure
Before placing decorations or plants, check that the base sits flat, the supports do not wobble, and the sides and roof connections remain secure. For a planter, confirm that water can drain freely and that the frame does not bow as it is filled. Recheck fasteners and finish as part of ordinary outdoor upkeep.
