These eight ideas start with methods and materials described by university extension and National Park Service sources, then suggest simple ways to arrange them around the home. Some combinations are creative variations, not tested recipes.
Choose a garland for the look and location
Fresh greenery brings volume and a natural scent, while dried fruit, popcorn, and yarn offer color and texture without a bough-based design. Think about how much hands-on work you want, whether the materials are fresh or shelf-stable, and whether the finished piece will be near heat. The sources below provide project methods and safety guidance, but do not establish a guaranteed lifespan for every material or placement.
| Garland direction | Main materials | Look and useful placement | Making notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Popcorn and cranberry | Plain popcorn, cranberries, floss, needle | Traditional strand for a tree, mantel, or window | Simple threading; intended as seasonal decor |
| Dried citrus | Orange, grapefruit, or lemon slices; twine | Colorful, translucent accents for a window or mantel | Requires oven drying and adult handling of the knife |
| Fresh evergreen | Fir or balsam boughs; ties or ribbon | Full, classic greenery for a mantel or doorway | Arrange and secure boughs; freshness varies with conditions |
| Layered botanicals | Evergreen, boxwood, juniper, or dried botanicals | Mixed color and texture for a mantel or shelf | Use gathered materials only where collection is permitted |
| Pinecone and greenery | Pinecones, greenery, ribbon, optional battery-operated lights | Rustic accent for a mantel or display | A flexible arrangement idea rather than a tested pattern |
| Yarn tassels | Yarn or embroidery floss, cardboard, tape, glue | Soft, colorful accents for a shelf or doorway | Make tassels individually, then attach them to a separate string or ribbon |
8 DIY Christmas garland ideas
1. Popcorn and cranberry strand
Thread plain, unbuttered popcorn onto embroidery floss or waxed dental floss using a needle; add cranberries between pieces for red accents. West Virginia University Extension recommends plain popcorn to avoid flavor or salt residues and suggests the strand for indoor use on a tree, mantel, or around a window. It is a seasonal project rather than permanent storage decor. WVU Extension assistant professor and 4-H agent Alex Mathias says, “While these usually only last the season, you can make it a tradition of stringing popcorn garland each year.” WVU Extension’s holiday decorating guide.
2. Dried citrus and twine
Use orange, grapefruit, or lemon slices for a warm, translucent garland. The National Park Service’s Fort Vancouver instructions call for crosswise slices about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Pat away moisture, arrange the slices on parchment, and bake at 250°F for about three to four hours, turning them after 1½ hours. Remove slices that begin to brown; an adult should cut the fruit. Thread the dried rounds onto twine, leaving room between them. The slices can continue drying after they are strung, and a food dehydrator is another option when used according to its instructions. 3. Fraser fir or balsam bough garland
For a classic green garland, use boughs of Fraser fir or balsam. University of Minnesota Extension identifies both as choices that tend to stay fresh longer in garlands and wreaths; that is a relative recommendation, not a fixed freshness guarantee. Layer and secure the boughs, then finish with ribbon if desired. University of Minnesota Extension’s guide to fresh-cut greens.
4. Pine layered with boxwood
For a more varied green texture, layer pine with boxwood. WVU Extension describes green zip ties as one way to hold boughs together and ribbon as a finishing accent. Use the arrangement as a mantel or doorway decoration, adapting the fastening to the materials and surface; the source does not prescribe a universal assembly for every species or setting. 5. Juniper and evergreen color mix
Add juniper or holly to evergreen boughs for contrasting color. These are material and arrangement suggestions from WVU Extension, not a tested species-by-species garland recipe. Keep the silhouette loose enough to show the different foliage, and use ribbon if you want a defined accent.
6. Dried botanicals and cones
Build a textural strand or bough arrangement with dried hydrangea, eucalyptus, pinecones, or other gathered winter materials. University of Minnesota Extension lists dried hydrangea, eucalyptus, boxwood, juniper, pinecones, birch logs, dogwood, and willow among materials that can be incorporated into winter displays, wreaths, or garlands. Choose a few materials rather than crowding them together; the source does not specify a single construction method for this mix. University of Minnesota Extension’s winter-decor material ideas.

7. Pinecones, greenery, and battery-operated lights
For a quick mantel or shelf display, combine pinecones and greenery with ribbon and battery-operated fairy lights. WVU Extension suggests these elements as a decorating combination. Keep the lights and their placement consistent with the manufacturer’s instructions; this combination is an arrangement idea, not a tested garland pattern. WVU Extension’s holiday decor ideas.
8. Yarn or floss tassel strand
Make tassels from yarn or embroidery floss, then tie them at intervals along a separate length of ribbon or string. The National Park Service’s tassel method uses cardboard, tape, glue, and scissors: wrap yarn around the cardboard, tie a hanger, cut the bottom edge, and bind the tassel near its top. The Park Service describes tassels as decorations rather than a complete garland pattern, so attaching them along a strand is a simple way to adapt the craft. Keep handmade garlands clear of heat and flame
Fresh greenery dries in warm indoor conditions. University of Illinois Extension advises against putting fresh garlands close to heat sources, lights, or candles. Keep all garlands away from open flames, and do not put lighted candles on or near evergreens. The U.S. Fire Administration advises keeping candles at least 12 inches from anything that burns; the Consumer Product Safety Commission also advises removing greenery and other decorations from the fireplace area before lighting a fire. Illinois Extension’s holiday decorating safety guidance, U.S. Fire Administration holiday fire safety, and CPSC holiday decoration safety tips.
If you add electric holiday lights to a display, inspect them each year, discard strands with frayed or pinched wires, and follow the manufacturer’s limit for connecting strands. The U.S. Fire Administration attributes the statistic that almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems to the National Fire Protection Association; it is a Christmas-tree-fire figure, not a garland-fire statistic.
