DIY Bike Fenders and Mudguards: How to Choose and Install Them Safely

Match fenders to tire width, frame clearance, and mounting points, then adjust and check the installation before riding.

To fit bike fenders (also called mudguards), match the fender to your tire and frame—not just the wheel size—then mount it securely, center it over the tire, and confirm it clears the wheel and frame through a full rotation. The right mounting style depends on whether your bike has fender mounts and how much coverage you want.

Choose a fender that fits your tire and frame

Read the tire sidewall and note both the wheel size and tire width. Examples include 29 × 2.35 for a mountain tire and 700 × 25c for a road tire. Those measurements help narrow your options, but they do not prove that a fender will clear your frame. Check the fender’s profile width against the actual space at the fork, stays, bridges, and other narrow passages. SKS explains these fit checks and mounting styles in its selection guide.

Choose a mounting style

  • Quick-release or clip-on: Clips or straps attach to parts such as the seatpost, frame, or fork. These can be easier to remove, but check that the attachment points suit your bike.
  • Bolt-on: Full-coverage fenders generally use frame mounts. If your bike lacks the required mounts, some systems use compatible clamps; follow the fender maker’s instructions for the specific frame and hardware.

Compare wheel-size and tire-width ranges, profile width, mounting points, coverage, and adjustability. A product labeled “universal” still needs a real clearance check.

Example: a quick-mount rear fender

Topeak lists its TETRAFENDER M2 for 26–29-inch wheels, tires up to 2.8 inches wide, and seatstays 95–125 mm across. It attaches with hook-and-loop straps and has an adjustable length. These specifications can screen out obvious mismatches; they do not replace checking the particular tire, frame, and attachment clearance. See Topeak’s compatibility details for the TETRAFENDER M2.

Inspect the bike and gather the right hardware

Before fitting anything, identify the fork crown and legs, frame bridges, dropout eyelets, cable routes, brake parts, and any rack or battery that could interfere. Find the tightest passages between the tire and frame. Check the instructions supplied with the fender: attachment points, fasteners, and required tools vary by model.

  • Gather the suitable wrench or hex key, a ruler or tape measure, and the exact fasteners, washers, spacers, brackets, or clamps specified for the kit.
  • Protect the frame at clamp contact points only as recommended by the manufacturer or a qualified mechanic.
  • Do not improvise hardware that could loosen, touch the wheel, or damage the frame.
  • Use a drill only when the instructions call for a hole in the fender and the bicycle configuration explicitly supports that procedure. A model-specific instruction to drill is not general permission to drill a fender or frame.

Install and adjust the fender

Follow the fender’s own instructions as the controlling procedure. For instance, Vvolt’s aluminum fender guide attaches the front fender at the fork crown and fork legs, and the rear at the seatstay or chainstay bridge and dropout eyelets. Its kit uses stays and M5 bolts, washers, spacers, brackets, and an anti-rattle strip. The exact steps and hardware may differ on another fender or bicycle. Vvolt’s installation guide shows its model-specific procedure.

Check clearance and safety before riding

There is no single clearance measurement established for every fender and bicycle. Use the requirements for your specific equipment. Vvolt specifies a 10 mm gap between the tire top and fender blade bottom for its kit, explaining that debris can lodge when space is insufficient; that figure is not a universal rule. Vvolt’s guide gives the clearance for its installation.

Test wheel and frame clearance

  • Spin each wheel through a full rotation and look and listen for rubbing.
  • Check that the fender is centered and does not contact the tire, frame, brakes, cables, or other components.
  • Make sure stays and fasteners cannot shift into a wheel.

Take extra care with suspension forks

For a suspension fork, follow the fork maker’s model-specific safety procedure. SRAM instructs installers to depressurize the air spring or remove the coil spring, compress the fork fully, turn the handlebar from side to side, and check clearance at the down tube, fork crown, and tire. If any part contacts, adjust the fender or remove it. SRAM also warns that failing to meet the specified torque can create a crash hazard; do not guess torque values. Find the relevant SRAM manual and follow its model-specific instructions.

Planet Bike likewise tells users to check the finished installation and consult a qualified bicycle mechanic or local shop if unsure. Read Planet Bike’s Grunge front fender instructions.
