Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDigital multimeter usage comes down to matching three things before every measurement: the electrical quantity you want, the selector position, and the jack holding the red probe. Measure voltage across two points, current in series with the circuit, and resistance only on a de-energized, discharged circuit. A wrong function or jack can damage the meter, the equipment, or you.
Use the procedure below as a beginner-friendly framework, then apply the limits, symbols, fuses, and category ratings in your own meter’s manual. The controls and allowable measurements differ by model.

What a digital multimeter measures
A digital multimeter (DMM) converts an electrical measurement into a numerical display. The common functions are AC voltage, DC voltage, current, resistance, continuity, diode testing, and sometimes capacitance. The selector may use symbols rather than words, and one jack may serve several low-energy functions while separate jacks handle current.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The instrument normally has a black COM jack, a voltage/resistance jack, and one or more current jacks. The black lead stays in COM for ordinary measurements. The red lead must be moved to the jack specified for the selected function. Fluke’s explanation of DMM jacks stresses that a mismatch between the selected function and red input can create a dangerous fault path: review the jack and symbol layout for your meter.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.

Before touching a circuit, identify the meter’s maximum voltage and current, fuse type, measurement category (CAT) and lead ratings. A meter designed for bench electronics is not automatically suitable for a distribution panel or other high-energy installation.
Safety checks before connecting the probes
Electrical testing can expose you to shock, arc flash, burns, and equipment damage. The following checks are a minimum, not a substitute for formal training, workplace rules, or a qualified person’s assessment. OSHA’s 1991 field memo is a historical interpretation, not a comprehensive current safety standard: read it in that limited context.
- Read the model manual. Confirm the symbols, ranges, input jacks, allowable overload, fuse ratings, and measurement-category markings. Do not infer a rating from the display or case shape.
- Inspect the meter and leads. Look for cracked insulation, exposed conductors, loose probe tips, damaged shrouds, or a case that will not close. Remove damaged equipment from service.
- Check the environment. Determine whether the circuit is a low-energy control circuit, an appliance circuit, a panel, or a distribution system. Choose meter and probe CAT and voltage ratings for the highest category you expect to encounter. Fluke gives the cited example that a 480 V electrical-distribution feeder needs at least CAT III-600 V equipment; that example is not a universal rule for every installation.
- Set the function before contact. Select AC or DC voltage, current, resistance, or another function while the probes are away from the circuit. Verify that the red lead is in the matching jack.
- Plan a safe contact. Keep fingers behind probe guards, avoid bridging adjacent terminals, and use one hand where your site procedure requires it. Stop if you cannot identify the circuit or the meter’s limits.
For exposed energized work, use the site’s qualified-person process and appropriate protective equipment. This guide explains measurement principles; it is not a complete live-work procedure.

Probe connections and measurement states
| Measurement | Probe placement | Circuit state | What the reading represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC or DC voltage | Across the two points of interest; black lead normally in COM and red lead in the voltage jack | Energized as required for the voltage to exist | Potential difference between the two points |
| Current | Meter inserted in series so circuit current flows through it; red lead in the specified current jack | Power applied only after the series connection and limits are verified | Current through the branch containing the meter |
| Resistance | Across the component or section being checked | Power off; high-voltage capacitors discharged | Opposition to current, including any parallel paths still connected |
| Continuity, diode, or capacitance | Across the device or conductors under test | Power off; capacitors discharged where applicable | A function-specific test result, not a general voltage reading |
Always give the manual priority if its connection diagram or warning differs from this overview.

How to measure AC or DC voltage
Voltage is a parallel measurement: the meter observes the difference between two points without becoming the normal load path. Choose AC volts for an alternating source and DC volts for a battery, DC supply, or control signal. If you are unsure which waveform is present, stop and identify the circuit rather than guessing.
- Put the black lead in COM and the red lead in the voltage/resistance input, not a current jack.
- Turn the selector to AC V or DC V. Select a range that is within the meter’s limit; use auto-ranging only if the meter supports it and you understand its behavior.
- Place the probes across the points whose potential difference you need. Do not put a voltage-mode meter across a current jack or intentionally short the two points with a probe tip.
- Read the display and note the unit. A minus sign on a DC reading usually means the probe polarity is opposite to the meter’s reference.
- Remove the probes, then return the selector and leads to a safe default before changing tasks.
Most DMMs have auto-polarity. Keysight recommends connecting COM to the lower-voltage, chassis, or zero-volt point as a best practice: see its digital-multimeter guidance. That convention does not authorize probing an unknown or hazardous circuit; establish the circuit’s reference and category first.
Construction and maintenance examples
On a de-energized building-control panel, voltage mode can verify whether a 24 V control supply is present once the circuit is safely powered for that check. On a battery-powered tool, DC voltage can show whether the pack is within its expected operating range. For an AC installation, the expected nominal value and the permitted test method come from the equipment documentation and site procedure, not from a guessed range.
How to measure current without creating a short circuit
Current measurement is fundamentally different from voltage measurement. The meter becomes part of the circuit, so the circuit’s current must flow through it. Accidentally placing a current-jack meter directly across a voltage source can create a near-short circuit and may blow the meter fuse or produce an arc.

- Additional Tips - Please take off the cap before using the test leads. Check the manual for more usage information.
- Determine the expected current and whether it is within the meter’s continuous and temporary limits. Check the correct fuse and current input in the manual.
- Switch off power and open the circuit at the point where the meter will be inserted. Arrange the probes and leads so the meter will be in series, never across the source.
- Move the red lead to the appropriate milliamp or amp jack. Keep the black lead in COM unless the manual specifies otherwise.
- Select the highest suitable current range first when the magnitude is uncertain. Confirm the meter’s category and lead ratings for the installation.
- After the series connection is checked by a qualified person or by your approved procedure, restore power and read the current.
- Remove power before moving a probe, changing the current jack, or returning to voltage measurements. Move the red lead back to the voltage jack immediately.
This is a general principle, not a complete procedure for live mains work. If you do not understand how to open and restore the circuit safely, do not attempt the measurement; consult the equipment manual and a qualified electrician or technician.
How to measure resistance, continuity, diodes, and capacitance
These functions generally inject a small test signal from the meter. External circuit power can corrupt the result or damage the meter, so Fluke instructs users to turn off power and discharge high-voltage capacitors before resistance, continuity, diode, or capacitance testing: follow the full basic-use sequence.
Resistance
- De-energize the equipment, isolate its supply, and verify that high-voltage capacitors are discharged using the approved procedure.
- Put the black lead in COM and the red lead in the voltage/resistance jack.
- Select Ω and touch the probes across the component or section.
- Keep your fingers off the conductive probe tips; your body resistance can affect high-value readings.
- Interpret the value in context. A component still connected to the circuit can have parallel paths, producing a reading lower than the isolated component value.
If the circuit must remain assembled, identify which parallel components are connected. Disconnect one lead or otherwise isolate the component only when the equipment procedure permits it. For very low resistance, lead and contact resistance may be significant. Keysight describes two-wire and four-wire methods; four-wire measurement uses separate current and voltage connections to reduce lead/contact error when precision matters. Use four-wire mode only when your meter and test setup support it: consult the technical explanation.
Continuity
Continuity mode normally signals when resistance is below the meter’s threshold. Because the threshold varies by model, treat the beep as an indication, not a universal resistance value. Test only on a powered-down, discharged circuit and confirm the conductor is the one you intend to check.

Diode test
Diode mode applies a test current and displays a forward-voltage result or an out-of-range indication. Observe polarity and isolate the diode from other powered paths. A reading in circuit may be misleading when other semiconductor or resistor paths are connected.
Capacitance
Discharge the capacitor first, observe polarity for polarized parts, and allow the display to settle. In-circuit capacitance can include neighboring components, so isolate the part when the service procedure calls for a component value rather than an assembly-level indication.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reading the display and avoiding common mistakes
- Wrong lead jack: A red lead left in an amp jack is the most dangerous setup error when you switch back to voltage. Before every contact, say the function and verify the jack visually.
- AC/DC mismatch: A DC setting on an AC source, or vice versa, can produce an unexpected or unusable reading. Confirm the source type from the schematic or equipment label.
- Overrange indication: “OL,” a flashing value, or a similar symbol usually means the selected range is exceeded or the measured resistance is beyond the display range. Remove the probes and choose a permitted range; never exceed the meter’s maximum.
- Unstable resistance: Power may still be present, a capacitor may be charging, or parallel paths may be switching. De-energize, discharge, isolate, and repeat.
- Unexpected zero or near-zero voltage: The probes may be on the same node, the reference may be wrong, or a protective device may have opened. Recheck the points against the schematic.
- Blown current fuse: Stop using current mode until the fuse is replaced with the exact type and rating specified by the manual. Do not bridge it with wire or foil.
- Lead resistance in low-ohm work: Short the probes together only as the meter’s procedure allows, note the lead resistance, and use a four-wire method when the required accuracy justifies it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my resistance reading change when I touch the probes or component?
Your body, probe contact, and connected parallel components can add alternate current paths. Keep fingers behind the guards, improve contact, and isolate the component from the circuit before treating the value as its standalone resistance.
What should I do if I am unsure whether a circuit is safe to test?
Do not probe it. Identify the circuit and its category, verify the meter and lead ratings, and obtain the equipment procedure or assistance from a qualified person before continuing.
