The claim that Sweden’s lumber exports fell 55% in August is not supported by the authoritative August 2026 figures currently available. Statistics Sweden reported that Sweden’s total goods exports rose 11% year on year to SEK 159.9 billion in August 2026. Separate forestry statistics do show weaker activity, including lower sawlog stocks and a smaller area notified or applied for felling, but neither measure is a lumber-export total.
What the August 2026 trade figures actually show
Statistics Sweden’s official foreign-trade statistics report the value of all Swedish goods exports, not a standalone lumber series, at SEK 159.9 billion in August 2026. That was an 11% increase compared with August 2025. Goods imports were SEK 171.8 billion, producing a net trade balance of SEK -11.9 billion for the month.

| Net trade balance | SEK -11.9 billion | Exports minus imports for goods |
The Statistics Sweden database contains monthly official observations through 2026M08. However, the August release does not state that exports of lumber, sawn wood or any other specified forestry commodity fell 55%. A rise in total goods exports can coexist with a fall in one product category, but the headline cannot be inferred from the aggregate figure.
Why the 55% headline is ambiguous
A percentage change is meaningful only when its commodity, geography, period and measurement basis are identified. “Lumber exports from Sweden” could refer to a specific customs code for sawn or planed wood, all wood products, or a broader timber category. It could also mean physical volume or export value. August could mean August 2026 compared with August 2025, or a different year and comparison period.

- Volume versus value: A 55% change in cubic metres is not the same as a 55% change in Swedish kronor. Prices, currency movements and product mix can make the two measures diverge.
- Total versus destination: A decline to one country does not establish a decline in Sweden’s exports to all markets.
- Monthly versus multi-month: A six-month result cannot be presented as an August result.
- Product definition: Logs, pulpwood, chips and sawn lumber are separate categories and should not be combined without a stated reason.
Forestry indicators that did weaken
Two official forestry measures point to softer supply conditions, but neither is an export statistic.
Coniferous sawlog stocks
At 30 June 2026, Sweden held 3.5 million cubic metres of coniferous sawlogs, down 23% from the previous quarter. Stocks of coniferous sawlogs, pulp chips and pulpwood combined totaled 9.7 million cubic metres. These figures describe material held in stock at a particular date; they do not measure lumber shipped abroad during August.

Felling notifications and applications
The Swedish Forest Agency reported 15,312 hectares notified or applied for felling in August 2026, a 19% decrease from August 2025. The agency cautions that monthly notification and permit figures can vary and should be interpreted carefully. This is an area-based indicator of planned or requested felling, not the volume or value of completed lumber exports.
| Indicator | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Coniferous sawlog stocks, 30 June 2026 | 3.5 million m³ | Stock volume, down 23% quarter on quarter |
| Combined sawlogs, pulp chips and pulpwood stocks, 30 June 2026 | 9.7 million m³ | Total stock volume |
| Notified or applied felling area, August 2026 | 15,312 hectares | Area, down 19% year on year |
Where a 55% figure may have come from
Industry material uses 55% in contexts that are materially different from a total August export decline. A 2023 global forest-industry summary said the European share of Swedish lumber exports had fallen from about 80% historically to around 55%; that is a destination share, not a year-on-year change in the amount exported.

A Random Lengths International table covering January through June 2024 showed a 55% decline in Sweden’s softwood-lumber exports to Turkey. That result applies to one destination and a six-month period. It does not verify a 55% fall in Sweden’s overall lumber exports in August.
How to verify the claim before using it
- Identify the exact Swedish customs or product code for the lumber series.
- Confirm whether the statistic is measured in tonnes, cubic metres, Swedish kronor or another unit.
- Check that the comparison is August 2026 against August 2025, rather than a different period.
- Determine whether the figure covers all destinations or a single market such as Turkey.
- Separate sawn or planed lumber from logs, chips, pulpwood and other wood products.
- Check the original statistical table and publication date, then report the denominator alongside the percentage.
What can be stated with confidence
As of the August 2026 official releases, Sweden’s total goods exports increased 11% year on year to SEK 159.9 billion. Forestry supply indicators weakened: coniferous sawlog stocks were 23% lower than the previous quarter, and notified or applied felling area was 19% lower than in August 2025. Those facts may help explain market concern, but they do not establish the headline claim.

- FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY — Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs

- CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN — Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
- PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS — The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
- ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS — Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.
Until a source identifies the lumber commodity code, unit, destinations and comparison period, “Sweden’s lumber exports fell 55% in August” should be treated as unverified rather than reported as an established result.
