Bleach can discolor a mattress cover, but a pale or uneven patch does not prove the mattress core is damaged. Stop applying chemicals, check the care instructions for your exact model, and avoid soaking the mattress.
What bleach may have done
Bleach-based products can strip or alter fabric dye, leaving a pale or uneven mark. Some manufacturers explicitly prohibit bleach on mattress covers: Sealy says “Do not bleach.” Tempur-Pedic says, “Never use bleach or bleaching products with the cover.”
A surface color change alone does not show whether the inner mattress was affected. The result depends on the product, amount used, exposure time, and mattress construction; without those details, there is no reliable way to diagnose hidden damage from the mark alone.
What to do next
- Stop treating the spot. Do not add more bleach or another chemical in an attempt to remove the mark.
- Find the exact care instructions. Check the mattress label and the manufacturer’s guidance for your model before applying water or cleaner. Rules can differ on bleach, water exposure, removable covers, approved cleaners, and drying.
- Contact the manufacturer if needed. Ask for model-specific advice if the mattress is still wet or you are unsure how far the bleach reached.
Clean only if your model’s instructions allow it
There is no one cleaning method that is safe for every mattress. For example, Sealy advises using a damp cloth, avoiding soaking the layers beneath the cover, and air-drying. Tempur-Pedic says its mattress should never become wet. Follow the instructions for your own mattress rather than applying one maker’s advice to another brand.

If your model permits spot cleaning, use only a cleaner the manufacturer allows, work carefully, and keep moisture away from underlying layers where instructed. Do not assume a mild detergent or a product labeled mattress-safe is suitable for every cover.
Can you remove the bleach mark?
The manufacturer guidance available here establishes a risk of discoloration, but not a reliable way to restore the original dye or color. Treat a remaining pale or uneven area as possible bleach discoloration; further cleaning may not bring the color back.

Prevent future stains and moisture exposure
A mattress protector can help limit future exposure to dirt and moisture. Arhaus recommends using one for added protection. A protector is preventive, not a repair for bleach discoloration that has already occurred.
