The right cordless platform depends on the tools your projects require, batteries you already own, and the work those tools must handle. DeWalt’s U.S. lineup centers on 20V MAX, with FLEXVOLT batteries supporting compatible 60V MAX tools; Bosch’s U.S. platform centers on 18V tools and AMPShare products. Their batteries are not interchangeable. Compare the exact tools, approved batteries, kit contents, and local prices before committing.
What separates the DeWalt and Bosch platforms?
Both manufacturers offer broad cordless catalogs, but their systems are distinct. DeWalt describes its 20V MAX line as containing 250+ products and offers compatible 60V MAX tools powered by FLEXVOLT batteries. Bosch’s U.S. cordless category lists 303 products across multiple categories, including both 12V and 18V products; its AMPShare system covers Bosch 18V tools and eligible 18V tools from alliance brands.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Those catalog counts do not establish equal coverage, quality, or performance. They also are not directly comparable: DeWalt’s figure is specifically for its 20V MAX line, while Bosch’s is for its broader cordless category. Bosch separately describes AMPShare as compatible with 150+ tools on its U.S. page; membership and availability can change. Check the exact tool rather than relying on a headline count.
The practical question is not which brand has the larger number on a platform page. It is whether the system includes the specific tools you need, whether its batteries are approved for those tools, and whether the kits available to you make sense for your budget and workload. A long catalog may be useful when you need multiple kinds of tools, but a product count does not tell you whether the models are suitable for your tasks or whether their price and weight work for you.

DeWalt says the 20V MAX label refers to maximum initial voltage; nominal voltage is lower. Voltage labels therefore should not be used as a direct performance comparison between manufacturers. More importantly, a DeWalt battery does not fit Bosch tools, and Bosch batteries do not fit DeWalt tools. Confirm compatibility in the product details or manual for every tool and battery combination.
That distinction matters if you are comparing a 20V MAX DeWalt tool with an 18V Bosch tool. The labels describe different manufacturers’ systems, not a standardized, direct test result for power, speed, runtime, or quality. No matched independent test is provided here. Compare equivalent tools for the job, then look at the individual model’s approved batteries, kit contents, and published specifications rather than treating the voltage number as a verdict.
How do the battery systems work?
DeWalt FLEXVOLT
FLEXVOLT batteries automatically switch voltage when moved between compatible DeWalt tools. DeWalt describes them as compatible with its 20V MAX tools and compatible 60V MAX tools. The battery system can therefore serve more than one voltage tier within DeWalt’s own platform, but that does not mean every FLEXVOLT battery works with every DeWalt tool. Verify the specific battery and tool pairing.
For high-demand work, identify whether the tool is a 20V MAX or 60V MAX model and use the battery types approved for that model. Do not assume a larger voltage label alone guarantees a better choice for a particular task; consider tool capability, battery capacity, expected runtime, and weight together.
The useful feature of voltage switching is flexibility within the compatible DeWalt system: a FLEXVOLT battery can be used with compatible tools from two DeWalt voltage tiers. It is not a universal adapter, nor does it mean that any battery carrying the FLEXVOLT name is automatically the right match for every tool. If you are buying a bare tool, a replacement battery, or a kit, compare the battery model and tool model as a pair. Check the product page or manual rather than relying on a general platform label.
For a reader who already owns DeWalt batteries, the relevant follow-up is whether those exact batteries are approved for the new tool and whether they provide a workable setup for the task. A battery’s compatibility and capacity are separate considerations: a battery may be compatible but not the preferred option for the runtime or weight you want. No matched runtime or weight results across models are provided here, so those details should be checked for the specific products under consideration.
Bosch 18V and AMPShare
Bosch describes AMPShare as a shared 18V battery-and-charger system for Bosch 18V power tools and eligible 18V cordless products from participating alliance brands. Bosch lists Fein, Rothenberger, and Wagner among alliance brands. This can be useful if a project requires a specific eligible product from one of those brands, but alliance participation is not a blanket guarantee that every cordless product from a member brand is compatible. Check that the exact tool is an AMPShare product.

Battery restrictions can also be specific to the tool family. Bosch’s GBA18V120 battery page says it works exclusively with PROFACTOR tools featuring BITURBO Brushless technology and is not compatible with non-PROFACTOR tools. That is a practical warning against buying by amp-hour rating or brand name alone: confirm the battery’s stated compatibility with the tool you intend to power.
AMPShare is most relevant when it gives you a verified option you would otherwise have to buy from a different battery ecosystem. The existence of an alliance does not make every tool from every listed brand part of it, and a shared 18V description should not replace a model check. Verify both that the particular product is an eligible AMPShare model and that the battery and charger combination you plan to use is supported.
The GBA18V120 example also shows why an amp-hour number cannot answer every buying question. Even a battery described as high-capacity has to be compatible with the target tool. Bosch’s page specifies that this battery is for PROFACTOR tools featuring BITURBO Brushless technology and excludes non-PROFACTOR tools. Treat that as a model-family restriction, not a reason to infer compatibility from the Bosch name or battery capacity alone.
Which platform fits your projects?
If you already own batteries
Start with the batteries and chargers you have. Staying on that platform can avoid replacing them, provided the tool you need is available and its manual confirms compatibility. Count usable batteries, not just tools: a platform is less convenient if the required tool needs a different battery type or if your existing batteries are not approved for it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Make a short inventory before shopping: list the battery models you own, the chargers you have, and the next tools your work requires. Then check each candidate tool against that inventory. The point is to distinguish an existing platform advantage from an assumption. Owning batteries is a practical reason to consider staying with a maker, but only if the needed tool and battery pairing are supported.
If the next tool is intended for a more demanding application, pay particular attention to its approved battery options. A battery you already own may not be the battery you want for that task, or it may not be compatible with the model at all. Compare the tool’s listed requirements and the complete working combination, including battery capacity and weight. If the combination does not suit the project, compare the cost and contents of a suitable kit rather than counting the old batteries as a benefit automatically.
If you are choosing a platform from scratch
Make a list of the tools you expect to need over the next few years, not only the first drill or driver. Compare equivalent kits and confirm what each box includes: tool, battery or batteries, charger, and any accessories that matter to your work. Then compare current local prices and warranty terms. The published catalog totals can indicate breadth, but they cannot tell you whether either platform has the specific tool, kit, or value you need.

Think in terms of a working set rather than a one-time purchase. If the project plan includes several tools, ask whether each one is available in the platform tier you are considering and whether the batteries selected for the first purchase can support later tools. For DeWalt, distinguish the 20V MAX line from compatible 60V MAX models and check FLEXVOLT details. For Bosch, distinguish the 18V tools from the broader U.S. cordless category and verify AMPShare status where an alliance product matters.
Set up an apples-to-apples comparison. A bare tool should not be compared with a kit that includes batteries and a charger as if the prices cover the same items. Write down the tool model, included battery models and quantities, charger, accessories, local price, and warranty terms for each offer. If one package includes extras you will not use, do not treat those items as value without considering whether they matter to your project.
Current matched retail prices and total ownership costs were not established for these platforms, so there is no supported basis here to say one platform is cheaper. Prices and bundle contents vary by retailer and can change. Use the offers available where you plan to buy, and compare the equipment you will actually receive rather than a platform-wide claim.
If your work includes demanding applications
Identify the exact saw, rotary hammer, grinder, or other high-demand tool before selecting a battery system. DeWalt’s cited platform information includes compatible 60V MAX tools; Bosch lists high-power batteries and PROFACTOR/BITURBO tools, with model-specific restrictions. Compare the tool’s approved battery options, capacity, runtime expectations, and weight. A high-capacity battery may support longer work between charges, but it also changes the weight of the tool-and-battery combination.
Do not select a battery on a single number. Capacity is one part of the decision, but it does not by itself establish how long a particular tool will run under your conditions. No tool-by-tool runtime, weight, or matched performance tests for the two brands are provided here. Check the exact model’s information and decide what matters most for your work: capacity, the weight of the assembled tool, the availability of charging during the day, and the task the tool is expected to perform.

Higher-demand work makes model-level verification especially important. A DeWalt 60V MAX option is not a general replacement for every 20V MAX tool, and Bosch’s high-power battery example is not a universal match for all Bosch 18V products. Confirm the target tool’s platform tier and its approved battery choices before buying. If comparing a saw or rotary hammer across brands, compare models intended for the same task and review each model’s own specifications rather than making a brand-level claim.
If cross-brand options matter
AMPShare may broaden Bosch’s options when your required tool is an eligible product from an alliance brand. Check the exact model’s AMPShare status and battery requirements before purchase. That alliance is separate from DeWalt’s system; it does not make DeWalt and Bosch batteries compatible with one another.

Bosch’s U.S. page describes AMPShare compatibility with 150+ tools, and lists alliance brands including Fein, Rothenberger, and Wagner. Treat that as Bosch’s published ecosystem figure, not as a guarantee that any product bearing one of those brands’ names shares the same battery. Confirm that the product itself is included and available where you shop. If you do not need an alliance-brand tool, the figure alone is not a reason to prefer Bosch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two specific kits
- Match the job first. Compare equivalent tools intended for the same task, rather than comparing a compact drill kit with a higher-demand saw package. The platform comparison is useful only after you have identified the kind of work and tool class you need.
- Check the tool and battery compatibility. Read the product page or manual for the exact tool and battery model. For Bosch, check AMPShare eligibility and any PROFACTOR-specific battery restrictions; for DeWalt, distinguish 20V MAX from compatible 60V MAX tools and FLEXVOLT requirements. Do not assume that two products are compatible merely because they carry the same manufacturer name.
- Record what is included. Note the number and type of batteries, charger, and accessories. A bare tool and a kit are not like-for-like offers. If you already own a compatible battery and charger, that may affect which package makes sense, but first verify the exact compatibility.
- Consider the complete working setup. Account for battery capacity, tool weight with battery attached, runtime needs, and how often you can recharge during the workday. A larger-capacity battery can affect both the time between charges and the weight you carry; the relevant balance depends on the tool and the work.
- Compare current local price and warranty terms. Prices, stock, and kit contents vary by retailer and can change. Check the listing available where you plan to buy rather than relying on a catalog page. No matched price or total-cost comparison for these platforms was established.
- Choose around the work you actually do. If one platform already powers most of your tools, the convenience of staying within it may matter more than a catalog count. If starting fresh, prioritize the tools you need and the supportable battery combinations for those tools. Do not pay for ecosystem breadth you do not expect to use.
For a careful comparison, keep a simple side-by-side note with the two exact tool models and their matching batteries. Record whether each offer is bare tool or kit, what batteries and charger are included, the listed compatibility restrictions, and the local price. Then consider how each assembled tool will be used. This process prevents a broad system label, catalog count, or bundle headline from standing in for the details that affect your project.

As of the official U.S. pages accessed October 8, 2026, DeWalt stated that its 20V MAX line had 250+ products. Bosch’s U.S. cordless category listed 303 products, a category that includes 12V products as well as 18V products. Bosch’s AMPShare page described compatibility with 150+ tools. These are manufacturer-published ecosystem figures, not independent assessments of tool quality or a count of identical product categories.
The published information does not establish matched retail prices, total ownership cost, independent head-to-head performance, or tool-by-tool runtime and weight comparisons. It therefore cannot support a universal claim that one brand lasts longer, performs better, or costs less. Those questions require comparing the exact models, batteries, kits, and local offers relevant to your project.
Similarly, a higher product count does not establish that one platform has better coverage for your particular trade. The Bosch category figure includes more than Bosch 18V tools, while the DeWalt figure refers specifically to the 20V MAX line. AMPShare’s 150+ figure describes eligible tools in an alliance ecosystem, which is a different scope again. Use the counts as context for the ecosystems, not as a scorecard.
Manufacturer platform pages are useful for understanding stated compatibility and the products each company groups into a system. They do not replace an independent comparison of equivalent tools under the same conditions. No such matched test was identified for this comparison. If performance, runtime, durability, or value is the deciding factor, look for model-specific information or separately researched testing rather than treating the platform-level figures as proof.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are DeWalt and Bosch batteries interchangeable?
No. DeWalt FLEXVOLT compatibility is within compatible DeWalt 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. Bosch AMPShare batteries work with Bosch 18V tools and eligible 18V alliance products. Neither system makes DeWalt and Bosch batteries cross-compatible. Check the exact tool and battery models before purchase.

Is DeWalt 20V MAX more powerful than Bosch 18V?
The voltage labels alone do not establish a direct performance comparison. DeWalt explains that 20V MAX is maximum initial voltage and that nominal voltage is lower. No matched independent performance testing is included here. Compare specific tools and their specifications for the work you need to do.
Which platform is cheaper?
Matched current retail prices or total ownership costs for these platforms were not established, so there is no supported basis to claim that either platform is cheaper. Compare the exact tools, battery and charger inclusion, accessories, local prices, and warranty terms for the offers available to you.
Can any Bosch 18V battery power any Bosch tool?
Do not assume that from the Bosch name or an 18V label alone. Bosch’s GBA18V120 page, for example, says that battery works exclusively with PROFACTOR tools featuring BITURBO Brushless technology and is not compatible with non-PROFACTOR tools. Verify the battery and tool pairing on the product page or in the manual.

No. Bosch identifies those brands among AMPShare alliance brands, but eligibility applies to specific products, not automatically to every cordless tool from a participating brand. Check that the exact model is an AMPShare product and confirm its battery requirements.
Which platform should I choose if I already own one brand’s batteries?
Existing batteries and chargers are a practical reason to consider staying with that platform, as long as the tool you need is available and its documentation confirms compatibility. Check your exact battery models, the new tool’s requirements, and whether the complete setup suits the workload before deciding.
The Bottom Line
Choose by project and exact model, not by a universal brand ranking. DeWalt’s 20V MAX/FLEXVOLT system and Bosch’s 18V/AMPShare ecosystem each have distinct compatibility rules; their batteries do not cross-fit. If you already own batteries, verify they suit the tool you need. If you are starting fresh, compare matched tools, approved batteries, kit contents, weight, local price, and warranty terms. The available catalog figures do not prove that one platform performs better or costs less.
