The DeWALT D55154 is a wheeled electric compressor with a 4-gallon tank, a 1.1 HP continuous-duty motor, and published output of 3.8 SCFM at 100 PSI. DEWALT also lists 4.6 SCFM at 40 PSI, 4.2 SCFM at 60 PSI, and 4.0 SCFM at 90 PSI. Those pressure-specific figures—not the tank size alone—determine whether it can keep an air tool running. The unit switches on at approximately 95 PSI and off at approximately 125 PSI, requires 120 volts at 14 amps, and is specified for a five-minutes-on/five-minutes-off duty cycle.
This guide explains the D55154’s specifications, how to match it to an air tool, safe operating procedure, maintenance, troubleshooting, revision differences, and the correct route for parts or service.

How much air does the D55154 deliver?
DEWALT’s support information, updated September 29, 2022, gives these airflow ratings for the D55154:
| Pressure | Published airflow |
|---|---|
| 40 PSI | 4.6 SCFM |
| 60 PSI | 4.2 SCFM |
| 90 PSI | 4.0 SCFM |
| 100 PSI | 3.8 SCFM |
Use the rating closest to the pressure your tool actually requires. A tool specified at 90 PSI should be compared with 4.0 SCFM at 90 PSI, not with the 4.6 SCFM figure at 40 PSI. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent laboratory test results.
Why the tank size is not the same as air capacity
The 4-gallon tank stores compressed air for short bursts and gives the pump time to catch up between tool cycles. It does not mean the compressor can continuously supply 4 gallons of air per minute, and it does not change the pump’s SCFM rating. A tool that consumes more air than the pump can deliver will eventually draw the tank down, even if it starts normally with a full tank.

What cut-in and cut-out mean
At approximately 95 PSI, the pressure switch starts the motor; at approximately 125 PSI, it stops the motor. These are tank switching thresholds. They are not a promise that an accessory receives 125 PSI while operating. The regulator, hose, fittings, pressure drop, and the tool’s own demand determine the pressure available at the tool.
Choosing air tools for the D55154
Before connecting an accessory, find the tool manufacturer’s required pressure and SCFM. Compare those requirements with the D55154 output at the same pressure. The D55154 manual states that a larger compressor is needed when an accessory requires more CFM or pressure than the compressor supplies.
- Read the tool’s specification plate or manual and record its required PSI and SCFM.
- Find the D55154 rating at that pressure: 4.6 SCFM at 40 PSI, 4.2 at 60 PSI, 4.0 at 90 PSI, or 3.8 at 100 PSI.
- Confirm that the compressor’s available pressure and airflow meet the tool requirement. Do not substitute the tank’s 4-gallon figure for SCFM.
- Account for the hose, couplers, regulator, and any filter or separator. Restrictions can reduce pressure at the tool even when the tank gauge looks full.
- For a tool that runs continuously, observe the five-minutes-on/five-minutes-off duty cycle and watch whether pressure falls while the tool is operating.
Intermittent use can be workable when the tool’s demand is within the published output and the compressor has recovery time. Continuous high-demand use is limited by the D55154’s airflow and duty cycle. If pressure repeatedly falls below the tool’s required operating pressure, stop and use a larger compressor rather than defeating the pressure controls.

Electrical and installation requirements
The D55154 is specified for a grounded 120-volt, 60-Hz supply drawing 14 amps. The manual calls for a minimum 15-amp branch circuit. Use the correct voltage, adequate fuse protection, and a properly grounded receptacle. A long or undersized extension cord can cause voltage drop and starting trouble; follow the cord and electrical guidance in the manual for your installation rather than improvising a circuit.

The manual says not to operate it indoors or in confined areas. Keep the machine stable, leave guards in place, and remain present while it runs. Wear ANSI Z87.1 eye protection with side shields. Metal surfaces can remain hot after operation, so allow the unit to cool before touching the pump or other hot components.
Safe operating procedure
- Inspect the cord, plug, guards, hoses, fittings, gauges, and tank for damage or leaks. Do not use the compressor if a guard is missing or damaged.
- Set the unit on a stable surface in an open, ventilated location. Keep combustible material away from hot surfaces.
- Verify that the supply voltage and branch circuit match the 120 V, 14 A specification and that the receptacle is grounded.
- Connect the hose and accessory with the compressor switched off. Set the regulator to the pressure required by the accessory; never exceed the accessory’s rating.
- Start the compressor and remain with it while it operates. Watch the gauges, listen for abnormal noise or vibration, and check for air leaks.
- Respect the five-minutes-on/five-minutes-off duty cycle. Stop the unit if it overheats, vibrates unusually, or develops an electrical or pressure-control problem.
- When work is complete, switch off and disconnect power, release pressure from the hose, and drain condensation from the tank.
The manual’s exact instruction is: “Drain air tank daily or after each use.” Retained water can promote corrosion and weaken the tank.

Maintenance the manual expects
After every use
- Drain the tank completely after each use.
- Check for new leaks, unusual noise, vibration, or visible damage.
- Clean the exterior and keep ventilation openings clear.
Routine checks
- Test or inspect the safety valve according to the manual.
- Inspect and clean or replace the air filter as specified.
- Check the tank drain and fittings for leaks or blockage.
- Check the pump-oil level and change oil at the interval in your applicable manual.
- Look for corrosion, especially around the tank and drain area.
Pump oil and revision differences
The retrieved N629001 maintenance section specifies SAE 5W-40 full-synthetic pump oil and lists a 12-ounce pump-oil capacity. Because DEWALT manuals can vary by revision, verify the oil grade and procedure in the manual that matches your unit before adding oil. Do not choose an oil solely from a generic parts listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Never repair a damaged pressure tank
A leaking, bulging, deeply corroded, or otherwise damaged tank is a safety-critical failure. The manual states: “Never drill into, weld, or make any modifications to the air tank or its attachments. Never attempt to repair a damaged or leaking air tank.” Replace the tank or compressor as directed; do not patch, weld, drill, braze, or modify it. Corrosion caused by retained water can reduce the tank’s strength even when the outside damage looks minor.

Troubleshooting common D55154 symptoms
| Symptom | Checks and appropriate action |
|---|---|
| Air leaks | Stop the compressor, release pressure, and inspect hoses, fittings, drain hardware, and connections. A leaking or damaged tank must be replaced, not repaired. |
| Low delivered air | Compare the accessory’s SCFM and PSI requirement with the D55154 rating at the same pressure. Check for hose or fitting restrictions, an open drain, leaks, or a dirty air filter. A demand above the published output requires a larger compressor. |
| Regulator problem | Verify the regulator setting and gauge behavior. If the regulator or pressure-control system does not operate correctly, disconnect power and use authorized service. |
| Moisture in pump oil | Drain the tank after use, inspect for operating conditions that allow condensation, and follow the applicable manual’s oil-change procedure. Persistent contamination requires service. |
| Motor will not start | Confirm the 120 V supply, grounded connection, fuse or breaker, and that tank pressure is not creating an abnormal restart condition. Do not bypass electrical or pressure controls; have unresolved faults examined by authorized service. |
If the compressor trips a breaker, overheats, emits burning odor, or shows damaged wiring, disconnect it and arrange qualified service instead of repeatedly resetting the circuit.
Parts, manuals, and service support
DEWALT’s ServiceNet portal provides a manufacturer route to view, print, and email schematics and manuals, order replacement parts, and locate authorized service agents. That establishes a support channel, but it does not guarantee that a particular D55154 part remains available. Confirm the model number, serial information, and manual revision before ordering.
An entry in DEWALT’s recall index dated June 21, 2005 concerns the D55143 three-gallon hand-carry oil-free compressor, a different model. It should not be described as a D55154 recall. If you need a current recall check, use the manufacturer’s current recall page and search the exact model and identifying information on your unit.
What to verify on a used D55154
Because the D55154 is an older model, inspect the individual machine rather than relying only on a listing or a generic specification sheet.
- Read the model label and compare it with the manual revision you intend to use.
- Check the tank for corrosion, dents, bulges, or leaks; reject any tank that appears compromised.
- Confirm that the safety valve, gauges, drain, guards, cord, and wheels are present and intact.
- Ask whether the tank has been drained after use and whether the specified pump oil has been maintained.
- Run the compressor only in a safe, ventilated location and observe whether it reaches its approximate cut-out pressure without abnormal noise, vibration, or overheating.
- Verify that replacement parts and authorized service are practical for your location before depending on the unit for production work.
Bottom line for tool and job-site planning
The D55154 is a compact, wheeled 4-gallon compressor whose useful published output ranges from 4.6 SCFM at 40 PSI to 3.8 SCFM at 100 PSI. Match the pressure-specific SCFM figure to the tool, allow for delivery losses, and respect the five-minutes-on/five-minutes-off duty cycle. Its 120-volt, 14-amp electrical requirement can fit a suitable 15-amp branch circuit, but safe operation still depends on grounding, ventilation, supervision, eye protection, and daily tank draining. A damaged tank is not repairable by patching or welding; replace it or the compressor and use authorized service for problems outside the manual’s user-maintenance procedures.
