Devil’s ivy, also called pothos or golden pothos, is the evergreen climbing vine Epipremnum aureum. Indoors, it is easy to grow as a trailing plant or train up a support. Give it bright, indirect light, let the growing medium dry between waterings, and keep it out of reach of children and pets because its leaves and stems are toxic if chewed.
What is devil’s ivy?
Epipremnum aureum belongs to the arum family, Araceae. In tropical conditions it climbs with aerial roots; as a houseplant, it is commonly grown in a pot or hanging basket, or trained vertically. “Angelic” is a decorative description, not a botanical category or a sign that the plant is harmless. University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension and NC State Extension describe its identity and growth habit.
How to care for pothos indoors
Light
Choose bright, indirect or filtered light for a reliable balance of growth and leaf color. Pothos can persist in lower light, but variegated leaves may lose some of their pattern. Protect it from strong direct sun. Penn State Extension also recommends indirect light for indoor pothos.
Water and growing medium
Allow the surface of the growing medium to dry before watering again. Use an airy, well-drained mix, and avoid leaving the plant in continuously wet soil: overwatering can contribute to root rot, according to Wisconsin and NC State Extension guidance.

Temperature and humidity
Wisconsin Extension describes 70–90°F and higher humidity as favorable conditions while noting that pothos tolerates a wide range. NC State also recommends added humidity. Treat these as source-specific favorable conditions, not strict thresholds required for every home.
Pruning and shaping
Trim individual vines to control their length or encourage new growth. If a plant needs a substantial reset, Wisconsin Extension says it can be cut back to about 2 inches from the soil line. Use a clean cutting tool, and avoid contact with the sap if your skin is sensitive.

Which pothos variety should you choose?
Common cultivars vary in leaf color and variegation. The best choice depends on the look you want and the light available where the plant will sit; no cultivar is guaranteed to keep the same color pattern in every room.

Cultivar names and stock vary by retailer. Wisconsin Extension reports pothos is sold in sizes from starter plants to hanging baskets.

How to propagate devil’s ivy
Stem cuttings are a straightforward way to make new plants; air-layering is another option. For a cutting, include a node, where roots can form, and an attached leaf. Place the cutting in water or vermiculite. Wisconsin Extension reports that roots may develop in about 3 to 4 weeks, with buds beginning in 1 to 2 weeks under warm temperatures. UF/IFAS commercial-production guidance gives a similar 3-to-4-week rooting interval and says buds may break in 2 to 3 weeks. These are reported intervals, not guarantees for a home cutting.

No. Pothos contains calcium oxalate and is toxic if chewed or ingested. Wisconsin Extension notes that chewing can cause a burning sensation in the mouth and that sap may irritate skin. NC State lists medium-severity poison characteristics, and University of Utah Health Poison Control categorizes pothos as a stomach irritant. Keep the plant and fallen leaves out of reach. If a person or pet chews or swallows any part, contact an appropriate poison-control service or veterinarian for advice.
