Roger de Meester’s custom-built dobby loom compresses an unusually complete textile-production workflow into a machine with a reed width of approximately 26 centimetres. It does more than motorize shuttle movement: the system selects warp threads, transports and changes shuttles, manages thread ends, checks weft tension, rejects empty bobbins, and uses a laser to detect broken warp threads.
That makes it an impressive research and prototyping machine—not a small consumer appliance or a documented industrial replacement. Its purpose is to explore specialized medical and industrial textiles, including fabrics incorporating conductive thread.

What kind of loom is it?
The machine is a dobby loom, a type of loom that controls groups of vertical warp threads to create different weave patterns. De Meester, identified by Hackaday as the builder, combines traditional shuttle weaving with robotic handling and electronic control.

The basic weaving vocabulary
- Warp: Lengthwise threads held under tension.
- Weft: The crosswise thread woven through the warp.
- Shed: The temporary opening between raised and lowered warp threads.
- Shuttle: The carrier that takes the weft across the shed.
- Bobbin: The spool of weft thread inside the shuttle.
- Reed: A comb-like component that spaces the warp and presses each new weft thread into the fabric.
- Dobby mechanism: The pattern-selection system that controls groups of warp threads.
A dobby loom should not automatically be called a Jacquard loom. Both can make patterned textiles, but they use different pattern-control approaches.
What “fully automatic” means here
In this project, automation extends well beyond adding a motor to a shuttle. The machine reportedly automates or monitors:
- Selection of warp-thread groups
- Shuttle movement through the shed
- Weft insertion
- Shuttle exchange
- Thread-end clamping
- Thread cutting
- Empty-bobbin rejection
- Weft-tension checking
- Broken-warp detection
- Coordination of the motors, actuators, sensors, and switches
That distinction matters. A powered loom still may require an operator to stop, rethread, change shuttles, or correct a fault. By automating those support operations, this design moves closer to a self-running textile cell.

How one weaving cycle works
The general cycle follows the logic of shuttle weaving. The selected warp groups rise and fall to form a shed. A shuttle carries the weft through that opening, and the reed beats the new thread into the developing cloth. The machine then checks its state before beginning the next cycle or changing shuttles.
The source describes the machine’s mechanisms but does not publish a complete timing diagram or control algorithm. The following sequence therefore combines the reported features with standard loom operation:
- Select the pattern: The dobby mechanism positions the required warp groups.
- Open the shed: The selected warp threads create a passage for the shuttle.
- Insert the weft: A belt-driven shuttle travels across the opening.
- Beat the pick: The reed presses the inserted weft into place.
- Check the condition: The system monitors tension and other machine states.
- Continue or change shuttles: The machine repeats the sequence or prepares a different colour or bobbin.
The shuttle-changing system is the mechanical centrepiece
The shuttles are 3D-printed and include magnetic ends. A belt-driven mechanism grabs the magnetic end and carries each shuttle across the warp. This avoids requiring a conventional operator to throw or retrieve the shuttle on every pick.
Different thread colours are stored in revolving drums. When another colour or a fresh bobbin is required, a robotic arm selects and places the appropriate shuttle on the track. A clamp secures the thread as the shuttle begins its run, while a wire cutter separates the outgoing thread when the shuttle is replaced.

That mixture suits a machine containing several distinct types of motion. Steppers can provide repeatable indexed positioning; DC motors can drive continuous or geared mechanisms; and servos are useful for compact angular movements such as clamps, cutters, or selectors. The microcontrollers coordinate those actions and use feedback from switches and sensors to determine whether a stage has completed.
There is no published wiring diagram or verified architecture identifying the exact board count, firmware, motor drivers, power-supply voltage, sensor part numbers, inter-board communication, emergency-stop design, or closed-loop position feedback. Those details should not be inferred from the Arduino branding alone.
Fault detection protects both cloth and machinery
Textile threads are flexible, inconsistent materials. A machine can complete a mechanically correct motion while producing defective fabric if a thread has broken, run out, or lost the correct tension. This loom addresses several of those problems.
Weft-tension checking
The system checks weft tension after each cycle. Abnormally low tension can leave slack, loops, or loose picks. Excessive tension can distort the fabric, stress the thread, or interfere with shuttle travel. The source does not identify the sensor or the threshold used to decide whether tension is acceptable.
Empty-bobbin rejection
An empty bobbin can allow the shuttle to travel without inserting usable weft. Automatically discarding such a shuttle is therefore a quality-control function, not just a convenience. It prevents the loom from continuing through apparently normal motion while silently producing missing sections.
Laser monitoring of the warp
A laser system monitors the warp to detect broken threads. A broken warp can create a longitudinal defect, disrupt the shed, or lead to tangling if operation continues. Laser detection is a compact way to watch many thread positions, although the available article does not describe its optical layout, calibration, or false-trigger handling.
Other potential problems include a misplaced shuttle, a thread-end clamp that fails to capture its thread, an incomplete cutter operation, or timing drift between the warp, shuttle, and reed. The reported sensors address selected faults; they do not establish that the machine has a complete industrial safety system or that every failure is automatically recovered.
A hybrid construction strategy
The loom combines 3D-printed parts, CNC-machined components, and parts recovered from discarded machinery. It is therefore inaccurate to describe it simply as a 3D-printed loom.
For a one-off machine, 3D printing is well suited to custom shuttles, brackets, guides, and other geometrically unusual parts. CNC machining can provide more consistent surfaces and stronger components where alignment, bearing loads, or repeated contact matter. Salvaged machinery parts may contribute robust shafts, drives, or mechanisms without requiring every component to be fabricated from scratch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis approach also introduces trade-offs. Reused components can have unknown wear, backlash, and tolerances. Printed parts can be vulnerable to abrasion, impact, heat, or repeated loading, depending on their material and design. The article does not provide a durability test, service-life estimate, printed polymer specification, or maintenance schedule.

Why build a loom this small?
A narrow, automated loom is not intended to compete with a high-throughput industrial weaving line. Its value is flexibility. Researchers and makers can experiment with unusual structures, colours, and conductive threads without committing to a large production machine.
Conductive-thread fabrics could form the basis of textile sensors or other smart-fabric experiments. The project description also points toward specialized medical and industrial textiles. Those are intended applications, not evidence that the machine has produced a clinically approved product, a certified medical device, or a commercially deployed sensor textile.
The 26-centimetre reed width limits the width of a single woven piece, but that limitation can be acceptable when the goal is prototyping. A compact machine can make small samples and demonstrate a material or weave concept before a larger manufacturing process is considered.
How it compares with simpler alternatives
A manually operated dobby loom offers greater direct control and substantially less automation. A conventional powered loom can provide mechanical assistance without necessarily managing shuttle changes, thread ends, and fault detection. A simpler computer-controlled DIY loom may automate warp selection or motion while leaving bobbin changes and recovery to the operator.
Directly 3D-printed textile structures are another category entirely: they can create fabric-like forms without reproducing the interdependent process of tensioning warp, opening a shed, inserting weft, and beating the cloth. The de Meester machine is notable because it automates that full sequence and its supporting material-handling tasks.
These are qualitative distinctions rather than standardized performance comparisons. The source does not publish comparable speed, cost, reliability, energy, or output data for competing machines.
What is not documented
Readers considering this as a DIY build should note that the available feature does not provide a commercial model number, price, downloadable design package, complete parts list, verified production channel, or detailed construction plans. It also does not establish:

“Desktop-sized” describes the scale of the loom, not its ease of use, affordability, portability, or suitability for an ordinary home workspace. Setup would still be expected to involve tasks such as warping and threading the machine, loading bobbins, setting tension, configuring a pattern, clearing jams, and inspecting the resulting cloth. The source does not claim that every one of those tasks is automated.
The real achievement is system integration
The remarkable feature is not merely that a loom fits on a desk. It is that a single custom electromechanical system coordinates flexible threads, pattern selection, shuttle transport, colour changes, thread capture, cutting, tension monitoring, bobbin handling, and broken-thread detection.
That coordination is difficult because textile materials do not behave like rigid machine components. Threads stretch, slip, fray, break, and vary from one bobbin to the next, while belts, motors, clamps, and sensors demand repeatable positions and timings. De Meester’s loom addresses that mismatch with a combination of robotics, microcontrollers, sensors, printed parts, machined components, and salvaged mechanisms.
For makers, its lesson is broader than loom design: compact automation becomes genuinely useful when it handles the secondary operations and failure cases surrounding the headline motion. In this machine, that means not simply moving a shuttle, but managing the entire small-scale weaving workflow.
