Interior glass walls work best when daylight, structure, hardware, safety and maintenance are designed as one system. The practical checklist below adapts guidance published by Building Design + Construction on August 11, 2010, and places it beside the Canadian safety-glazing record issued in March 2026. Use it to brief the architect, interior designer, structural consultant, glazing contractor and manufacturer; it is not a substitute for the codes and specifications governing a particular project.
Start with a coordinated design brief
Before selecting a partition profile or glass finish, define what the wall must do. Record the room boundaries, desired daylight, acoustic and privacy goals, door locations, ceiling and floor build-ups, structural constraints, cleaning regime and completion date. A glass wall is a coordinated assembly: glazing, channels, supports, seals, doors, closers, handles, markings and adjacent finishes must fit together in the built conditions.

The checklist below comes from Marc Gordon, AIA, principal architect with Spacesmith. His warning remains useful for complex work: “Without mock-ups, there is a risk that the glazing and components will not fit properly and will require costly adjustments.” Because the article dates from 2010, confirm every dimensional, hardware and code decision against current manufacturer information and local requirements.

A full-scale or sufficiently representative mock-up can reveal conflicts that drawings hide. Include the actual glass make-up, channel or shoe, gaskets, door hardware, closer, handles, seals, adjacent ceiling and floor finishes. Check sightlines, glass-to-glass joints, door swings, clearances, tolerances and the sequence in which components will be installed.

Use the mock-up as a sign-off point with the design team, contractor and hardware supplier. Measure the opening and compare it with the approved details before releasing fabrication. This is especially valuable where several tolerances accumulate, such as a framed door beside a fixed lite, a recessed closer in a shallow header or a channel meeting an uneven floor.
2. Survey the floor before setting channels
Glazing at the floor exposes level changes. Survey the slab and finished-floor build-up along the entire run, not only at the ends. Identify high spots, depressions, ramps, thresholds and transitions to carpet, tile or resilient flooring.
Resolve the level variation in the design or substrate before installation so channels can be installed level and true. Depending on the project, that may mean correcting the floor, coordinating a recessed track, adjusting a trim condition or documenting a controlled transition. Relying on extensive shimming can leave an inconsistent sightline, reduce support or create problems for doors and seals.
3. Design blocking and support into the framing
Glass partitions need a reliable load path for channels, door hardware and closer components. Coordinate support with the structural and ceiling systems while the framing is still accessible. The 2010 guidance identifies steel or aluminum angles above the ceiling as a typical way to provide blocking, but the appropriate section, attachment and firestopping depend on the project.
Show blocking locations and elevations on coordinated drawings. Verify that the support reaches a suitable structure rather than only a suspended ceiling grid. Confirm fastener types, edge distances, deflection allowances and access for installation. Where the partition meets a slab, beam or bulkhead, resolve the connection before finishes conceal it.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
4. Coordinate door closers with the structure
Choose the closer strategy after reviewing both the slab and the header. Floor closers used with patch or rail hardware require a place for the closer body and its access. Some slabs, including waffle slabs, cannot accept the holes needed for floor closers. An overhead recessed closer can be a viable alternative when a floor installation is impossible, but it introduces its own header depth, clearance and blocking requirements.
Coordinate the door leaf, pivot, closer body, transom or header, ceiling grid, sprinklers, lighting and any structural reinforcement. Confirm the manufacturer’s required pocket dimensions and service access. A reflected ceiling plan alone will not show every conflict; section details and a coordinated hardware schedule are needed.
5. Specify glass thickness for the actual application
There is no universal thickness that suits every interior glass wall. Unnecessarily thick glass adds weight, cost and handling demands, while glass that is too thin for a long span can bend or flex objectionably. Span, panel width, support conditions, wind or impact exposure where relevant, door loads, deflection limits, edge conditions and the selected glass type all affect the decision.
Have the responsible design professional and glass supplier verify the make-up and support detail for the project. The 2010 checklist supplies a principle rather than a sizing table, so do not treat a thickness copied from another partition as an engineering approval. Put the agreed thickness, treatment, tolerances and edge finish in the specification and shop-drawing review.
6. Review the real appearance of “clear” glass
Clear glass is not always visually neutral. An inherent green or blue tint can be visible at edges, in large uninterrupted lites and where glass is viewed against white finishes. The tint varies with manufacturer and glass type, so a small sample may not represent the appearance of a full-height wall.

Request samples that show the proposed thickness, coating or interlayer and edge condition. View them in the intended lighting and beside adjacent materials. If color consistency matters across multiple rooms or phases, identify the approved manufacturer and glass type rather than specifying “clear” alone.

7. Decide how laminated-glass edges will be seen
Laminated glass contains a plastic interlayer. When an edge is exposed, the interlayer can appear as a visible line. That line may be acceptable, concealed by a channel or deliberately incorporated into the detail; it should not be an accidental result discovered after delivery.
Mark exposed and concealed edges on elevations and sections. Coordinate the edge with butt joints, doors, corner posts, base channels and adjacent finishes. If a visually uninterrupted edge is required, ask the fabricator what edge treatment and tolerances are achievable for the specified make-up.
8. Plan all cutting and drilling before tempering
Do not field cut or drill tempered glazing. The 2010 guidance states that this work requires special tools and must be completed at the factory. Once a pane has been tempered, an attempted alteration can damage it and create a replacement delay.
Freeze the hardware schedule and verify every hole, notch, corner radius, hinge preparation and patch fitting before fabrication. Use coordinated shop drawings that show dimensions from reference edges, not only nominal centerlines. If a site condition changes, stop and obtain a revised fabrication solution; do not ask an installer to modify the tempered lite in place.

9. Match etched or sandblasted finishes to the cleaning plan
Acid-etched and sandblasted surfaces can provide privacy and visual texture, but exposed frit or open-pore areas can absorb grease and oils. Fingerprints and construction residue may therefore be harder to remove than from a smooth surface.
Decide where the textured face will be located and how it will be protected during construction. Specify cleaning products and methods recommended by the glass manufacturer; an unsuitable abrasive or solvent can change the finish. Include the surface in the facilities team’s routine-cleaning instructions, especially at handles, corners and circulation routes where contact is frequent.
10. Allow schedule time for specialty glass
Some standard glass types may be stocked, while specialty colors, patterns, laminates, frits and custom finishes require manufacture. Lead time affects not only the glass itself but also samples, approvals, fabrication, shipping, inspection and replacement of damaged pieces.
Ask the supplier for a dated production and approval sequence at the start of design development. Identify long-lead selections in the procurement schedule and obtain an approved alternate only if its color, performance, thickness, edge appearance and maintenance characteristics are acceptable. Do not promise a completion date based on a nominally “standard” description until availability is confirmed for the required region and quantity.
11. Integrate visibility markings into the design
Large transparent surfaces can be difficult to perceive, particularly at entries, corners and busy circulation paths. The checklist recommends distraction markings to deter people from walking into glass. Treat the markings as graphical elements that support the interior concept rather than as an afterthought applied after the wall is installed.

Coordinate their location with door swings, handles, mullions, artwork, signage, lighting and sightlines. Select a treatment that remains legible against changing backgrounds and can be replaced or cleaned. The 2010 article does not prescribe a pattern, dimensions or jurisdictional standard, so verify the marking and safety-glazing requirements that apply where the project is built.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety glazing: use current, local requirements
The Government of Canada catalogue record for CAN/CGSB-12.1-2026, issued in March 2026, says this edition supersedes the 2022 edition. Its stated scope is minimum performance intended to reduce cutting or piercing injuries when glazing materials in human-impact areas fracture. It is a Canadian standards record, not a worldwide code and not a complete partition specification.
The record expressly does not address strength, durability, fire-rated characteristics, appearance or installation methods. Consequently, compliance with a safety-glazing standard does not by itself determine the glass thickness, support, fire rating, acoustic performance, marking pattern or hardware detail for an interior wall. The project team must identify the governing jurisdiction, occupancy conditions and current adopted standards, then document the selected glass make-up and installation.

Visibility markings and safety glazing solve different problems. Markings help people perceive a transparent obstacle; the glazing make-up addresses how the material behaves if it breaks. Coordinate both, and have the responsible design professionals verify the final assembly.
Useful option comparisons during design development
| Decision | Option A | Option B | Primary coordination issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door closer location | Floor closer with patch or rail hardware | Overhead recessed closer | Floor closers need suitable slab conditions; overhead units need header depth, clearances and blocking. |
| Glass surface | Clear glass | Acid-etched or sandblasted glass | Clear glass may show green or blue tint; textured surfaces can require more demanding cleaning. |
| Procurement route | Potentially stocked standard glass | Custom specialty glass | Custom manufacture can add approval and production time. |
| Laminated edge | Concealed in a channel or trim | Exposed at a joint or termination | An exposed edge can show a line from the plastic interlayer. |
A practical coordination sequence
- Establish performance goals. Record daylight, privacy, acoustic, durability, fire and accessibility requirements with the room uses and circulation paths.
- Survey existing conditions. Measure floors, ceilings, slabs, beams, columns, openings and services before fixing partition dimensions.
- Choose a preliminary system. Select the glass type, thickness range, channel strategy, door hardware and surface treatment, subject to professional verification.
- Coordinate structure and support. Resolve blocking, header conditions, floor-closer feasibility, deflection and attachment details.
- Review samples and mock-ups. Approve appearance, edge treatment, hardware clearances, markings and cleaning expectations under representative lighting.
- Release complete shop drawings. Include every hole, notch, edge, joint, tolerance, reference dimension and finish before tempering or specialty fabrication.
- Protect and inspect installation. Keep textured surfaces protected, check channels and supports before concealment, and record defects or damage before handover.
- Hand over maintenance information. Provide manufacturer-approved cleaners, replacement-glass identification, hardware access instructions and the location of visibility markings.
Common failure modes and corrective actions
- Door hardware collides with the ceiling or structure: stop installation, reopen the coordinated section and verify the closer pocket, blocking and service access before ordering a replacement component.
- Channels are visibly out of level: document the floor survey and correct the substrate or approved transition detail rather than hiding excessive shims under trim.
- Glass arrives with an unexpected tint or edge line: compare it with the approved sample and specified make-up; resolve acceptance with the design team before installation spreads the mismatch.
- A required hole is missing: do not drill tempered glass in the field. Obtain a revised factory-fabricated lite or an engineered hardware change.
- Etched or sandblasted panels show persistent grease: follow the glass manufacturer’s cleaning recommendation and review whether handling protection and the cleaning frequency were adequate.
- Specialty glass threatens the programme: confirm manufacturing status immediately, assess an approved alternative, and adjust sequencing without silently substituting a different appearance or performance.
- People do not perceive a transparent door: review the visibility-marking design, contrast and location with the project’s applicable requirements and circulation pattern.
What to put in the specification and submittal review
A useful specification identifies the glass type and treatment, thickness or engineered make-up, safety classification required by the jurisdiction, edge exposure, finish, hardware preparations, channels, supports, tolerances, markings, cleaning instructions and sample or mock-up requirements. Shop drawings should tie those requirements to elevations, sections and reference dimensions.
Require the glazing contractor to identify proposed manufacturers, fabrication limitations, lead times and installation access. Require the design team to review the complete assembly rather than approving glass in isolation. This process turns the eleven tips into decisions that can be checked before materials become difficult or impossible to change.
Final decision rule
Proceed only when the transparent wall has a verified support path, a feasible door and closer arrangement, an application-appropriate glass make-up, an approved appearance, a fabrication-ready hardware schedule, a realistic specialty-glass programme and a visibility and maintenance plan. Local code officials and the responsible design professionals must confirm the final requirements for the project’s jurisdiction.
