Designing for Climate Change and Inclusion: What CBT Architects’ Leaders Put in Context

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Designing for climate change and inclusion is an urban-design problem, not only an energy-efficiency exercise. A Building Design + Construction interview published July 14, 2022, examined how climate change is affecting urban design through planning, materials, occupant use, location and the long-term effects buildings have on the environment. The guests were Kishore Varanasi, identified at publication as a Principal and director of urban design at CBT Architects, and Devanshi Purohit, identified as an Associate Principal.

The article page does not include a written transcript or a detailed list of the speakers’ recommendations. That distinction matters: the verified record establishes the interview’s subject, date and participants, but it does not support attributing a particular material, site strategy or resilience standard to the video. The most useful way to read it is as a prompt to connect climate performance with who can use, reach, afford and remain in a place.

What the July 2022 interview establishes

Building Design + Construction frames the conversation broadly. Climate change is presented as something that changes urban-design decisions at several scales:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Planning: the arrangement of land uses, streets, open space, housing and services.
  • Materials: what is specified, how it performs over time and what its production and replacement mean environmentally.
  • Occupant use: how people actually move through, operate and adapt buildings and public spaces.
  • Location: where development is placed in relation to hazards, infrastructure, transportation and daily needs.
  • Long-term environmental effects: consequences that continue after a project is completed, including maintenance, adaptation and eventual replacement.

Those categories make the interview relevant to urban designers, architects, developers, public agencies and construction teams. They also prevent a common narrowing of the subject to a single building system. A highly efficient building can still contribute to exclusion if its location makes essential trips inaccessible, its public realm is unusable for many residents, or rising costs force existing households out.

Why climate resilience and inclusion belong in one brief

Climate hazards and design decisions are experienced by people, not abstract diagrams. A shaded route, a cool interior, a nearby service or a building that remains usable during an interruption can change a person’s ability to work, travel, care for family or remain safely housed. Conversely, a project can shift heat, flooding, construction disruption or operating costs toward people with the least ability to absorb them.

Inclusion therefore asks more than whether a project has consulted a community. It asks who receives protection, who bears disruption, whose routines define “normal” use and who has authority to change the design. Climate work asks what conditions may become more difficult over the project’s life. Put together, the questions become practical: which users are most exposed, what does a proposed intervention cost them, and can they use it without special permission, money, mobility or technical knowledge?

This is a design and delivery issue as much as a social-policy issue. A plan that reserves resilience features for a private enclave, for example, addresses one site while leaving surrounding routes and services vulnerable. A construction sequence that blocks a bus stop or accessible entrance may create avoidable exclusion even if the finished building performs well. The combined brief keeps those effects visible.

Five lenses for turning the topic into project decisions

1. Planning: arrange protection and access together

Start with the plan rather than the façade. Map homes, workplaces, schools, health services, transit, parks, emergency routes and utility infrastructure before choosing individual interventions. Then ask whether the proposed network still works when a route is uncomfortable, flooded, smoky, excessively hot or temporarily closed.

Planning decisions should identify who is expected to maintain shared spaces and who can enter them. A resilient landscape that requires a fee, reservation or long trip is not equivalent to a freely accessible place near where people live. Record these conditions in the brief, not only in a later community-engagement report.

2. Materials: evaluate the whole service life

“Materials” includes more than embodied-carbon accounting. The team needs to consider durability, repair, replacement cycles, cleaning, heat gain, moisture, availability of replacement parts and the skills required to maintain the assembly. A specification that performs only when a specialist is available can create operational inequality.

For each major assembly, document the intended service life, inspection points, failure modes and a realistic repair path. Include the effects of construction waste, transport, temporary protection and future renovation. The goal is not to choose a universally “green” material; it is to make the environmental and social consequences of the choice legible over time.

3. Occupant use: design for real routines

Draw the day as users experience it. Consider arrival, waiting, deliveries, caregiving, work, rest, cleaning, refuge and departure. Test the scheme with people who have different mobility, sensory, financial and cultural needs. Ask what happens when a lift is out of service, a room overheats, a digital control fails or a household cannot afford an added operating cost.

Controls and instructions should be understandable without specialist training. Spaces should offer more than one way to enter, move, orient and regulate comfort where the programme permits. These are not decorative additions; they determine whether a climate response can be used by the people it is meant to protect.

4. Location: place development in a functioning network

Site selection affects exposure and opportunity simultaneously. Review hazard conditions, existing drainage, shade, air quality, transit, pedestrian routes, critical services and the capacity of surrounding infrastructure. A building may be robust on its parcel yet difficult to reach during a disruption.

Location analysis should include the surrounding community, not just the property line. Identify which routes are public, which spaces are shared and which improvements could raise rents or displace existing users. If a project depends on a future infrastructure upgrade, label that dependency and assign an owner rather than treating it as an assumption.

5. Long-term effects: design for change and accountability

Climate conditions, household needs and regulations will change during a building’s life. A useful brief states what can be adapted, who will decide, what must remain accessible during work and how costs will be funded. Commissioning should include a handover of operating knowledge, not merely equipment manuals.

Set review dates for performance, user experience and unintended effects. The review should be able to trigger a design or management change. Without that feedback loop, an inclusive intention can disappear when ownership, staffing or occupants change.

A practical workflow for an inclusive, climate-aware project

  1. Define the people and the risks. List user groups, neighbors, workers, visitors and people who may be excluded by cost, distance, language, disability or schedule. List the climate-related conditions that could affect them over the project’s life. Avoid a generic “community” label that hides different exposures.
  2. Map dependencies. Show connections to transit, utilities, public space, health and emergency services. Mark what the project controls, what another agency controls and what remains uncertain.
  3. Set measurable requirements. Convert goals into brief items such as accessible routes that remain open during construction, maintainable landscape systems, clear thermal-comfort responsibilities and a funded inspection schedule. If a requirement cannot be checked, rewrite it.
  4. Generate more than one response. Develop alternatives that address the same risk at different scales: site planning, public realm, envelope, systems, operations and management. Compare who benefits, who pays, how the intervention affects daily use and what happens at replacement.
  5. Test with users before commitment. Use walk-throughs, mock-ups, operational scenarios and plain-language drawings. Invite people who are often represented only indirectly, and compensate participation where appropriate. Record objections and the design response rather than counting attendance as proof of inclusion.
  6. Assign delivery and maintenance ownership. Put each action in the contract, operations plan or governance agreement with a responsible party, trigger and budget. A feature without an owner is a future failure point.
  7. Revisit after occupation. Check whether spaces are reachable, affordable to operate, comfortable and understood. Compare intended use with actual use and correct problems before they become permanent.

Questions that make alternatives comparable

When a team is choosing between strategies, use the same questions for each option. The interview page does not publish competing options or numerical results, so these are a decision framework rather than claims about what the speakers recommended.

Decision dimension Questions to ask Evidence to record
Climate risk Which condition does the option address, for how long and under what operating assumptions? Hazard scenario, design condition, trigger for action and residual risk.
Who benefits Which users gain protection or access, and who may be left out? User groups, locations, time periods and barriers.
Daily use Does the intervention change arrival, movement, comfort, privacy, work or care routines? Walk-through findings, mock-up results and operating instructions.
Cost and responsibility Who pays for installation, energy, cleaning, repair and replacement? Capital and operating allowances, owner and funding source.
Long-term effect What happens when the component fails, is replaced or must be adapted? Service-life assumption, repair route, waste plan and adaptation capacity.
Place and displacement Could the improvement alter access, rents, traffic or the use of nearby public space? Neighborhood effects, mitigation commitments and monitoring plan.

What later CBT material adds—and what it does not

CBT published later context that helps explain the firm’s broader climate and equity vocabulary, but it should not be presented as a transcript of the 2022 interview.

At a 2023 Climate Beacon conference, CBT’s account quoted Kishore Varanasi saying: “There hasn’t been a playbook or toolkit to deal with [climate change.] We’re all writing this together right now. That’s why this conference is so important. We are writing the playbook together.” The statement supports a view of climate practice as an evolving, collaborative process. It does not identify a specific recommendation from the Building Design + Construction video.

The same 2023 recap quoted Devanshi Purohit on a panel about Massachusetts’ future and human adaptability: “We can’t work in silos. We have to go across the table and hear ideas from wherever they can come from. We have to have an open mind and be open to new ideas, irrespective of the source.” That is a separately dated statement about collaboration, not a verified line from the 2022 interview.

CBT’s current leadership page lists Varanasi as Senior Principal and Director of Urban Design and Purohit as Principal. The firm describes Varanasi’s work in terms of equitable, resilient and human-centered futures, and Purohit’s in relation to climate strategies, placemaking, community-centered design, urban heat and resilience. Those are firm biography descriptions, not independent performance evaluations.

A 2023 CBT profile associates Purohit with climate resilience, community connections and social equity, and names the Suffolk Downs and Cambridge Crossing master plans, planning for the Mary Ellen McCormack housing community and the Abu Dhabi Climate Resilience Initiative among her projects. The profile supplies professional context; it does not establish that any one of those projects was discussed in the Building Design + Construction video.

How to use the interview without overclaiming

If you are citing the video in a briefing, article or project discussion, state the date, publication and participants, then describe its verified framing. Do not attach an unverified specification, case-study result or quotation to the speakers. If the exact design advice is essential, obtain and review the video itself before presenting it as their position.

For project teams, the durable value is the set of questions raised by the framing: where climate risk enters a plan, how material and operational choices affect people, who can use the result, and what happens over decades. Those questions can be applied immediately while preserving a clear boundary between documented remarks and a team’s own design judgment.

Common failure modes and practical corrections

  • Reducing climate design to a product list. Correct it by beginning with site, users, operations and service life before selecting assemblies or equipment.
  • Counting consultation as inclusion. Correct it by documenting who could not participate, what changed and who controls later decisions.
  • Solving the parcel while ignoring the network. Correct it by mapping public routes, utilities, services and neighboring effects.
  • Writing maintenance out of the brief. Correct it by naming an owner, budget, inspection interval and replacement path.
  • Presenting later comments as earlier interview content. Correct it by labeling the 2022 Building Design + Construction interview and the 2023 Climate Beacon statements separately.
  • Promising certainty where the source is incomplete. Correct it by saying exactly what the published page establishes and seeking the video when a detailed attribution is required.
