Its practical lesson for construction teams is straightforward: spaces should be planned and delivered with the lived experience of trans, nonbinary, gender-nonconforming and queer people in view, while treating light, sound, crowdedness, operations and social context as connected parts of safety, comfort and belonging.
The project is not a building code, a universal checklist or a claim that one feature makes a place safe. It is an evidence-informed way to ask better questions during briefing, design, construction and post-occupancy review.

What Designing Beyond the Binary is
Mithun describes Designing Beyond the Binary as a study of how people experience gender in everyday environments and how designers can turn those experiences into more equitable places. The stated aim is to assess comfort, safety and belonging across built environments and translate what people say into actionable design principles.

- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
For a construction business, the distinction matters. An inclusive outcome is not created by a late sign, a single restroom change or a decorative gesture. It depends on the brief, the plan, the details, the way a building is operated and whether occupants can move through it without having to explain or defend their identity.
How Mithun gathered its evidence
Mithun combined a national digital survey with semi-structured interviews. Survey questions were written for people without design training, so respondents could describe ordinary experiences rather than translate them into professional terminology. Interviews with trans and nonbinary designers added language about space, design and queer lived experience.
The lead researchers also incorporated their own lived experience as trans and queer people alongside conventional research methods. That combination is important: statistical comparison can show patterns, while interviews can explain what a doorway, corridor, toilet, waiting room or landscape feels like in use.
For analysis, the team grouped respondents into four categories based on perceived proximity to power within a patriarchal culture. Mithun says this aggregation was intended to permit comparison, protect anonymity and support meaningful statistical analysis. It also calls the categories imperfect and non-static. They are an analytical device for this project, not a permanent taxonomy of gender or a substitute for asking people how they identify.
What the project found—and what it did not establish
People do not experience a space’s gender coding in the same way
Mithun states: “The team found that LGBTQ+ respondents were more likely to perceive a space as gendered.” A lobby, restroom route, changing area, classroom, office or public square can therefore communicate assumptions about who belongs even when its drawings contain no explicit gender language.

Safety, comfort and belonging are related outcomes
Mithun reports that perceptions of safety, comfort and belonging aligned across gender groups, while particular spatial qualities had especially significant effects for LGBTQ+ people. The project specifically names light, sound and crowdedness. These are not guarantees: brighter lighting can create glare or exposure, sound masking can also make a person feel unseen, and a busy space can be either sociable or overwhelming depending on its layout and management.
The evidence is directional, not a set of universal thresholds
The project summaries reviewed for this article provide no named percentage, score or dimensional threshold that can be applied to every building. They support a design direction—pay close attention to light, sound and crowdedness and test how occupants interpret them—but they do not establish a single illumination level, reverberation time, occupancy limit or plan type that guarantees inclusion.
Recommended Free Tools
Mithun presents the findings as a starting point. It identifies limited intersectional coverage and calls for more thoughtful inclusion of race, ethnicity, national origin, age and other identities. It also says more work is needed on how environments can respond to acute and long-term violence against trans, nonbinary and queer communities. Construction decisions should therefore support safety without suggesting that architecture alone can prevent harassment or violence.
Turning the findings into construction decisions
The following framework translates the project’s evidence into questions a project team can answer. The responses are practical recommendations, not claims that Mithun tested a particular product or specification.
| Spatial quality | Questions for the brief and design review | Possible construction and fit-out responses | How to verify the result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Can people see faces, routes and exits without feeling exposed? Are there abrupt transitions between bright and dim areas? Do fixtures create glare, deep shadows or an appearance of surveillance? | Coordinate daylight, electric lighting, controls and finishes as one system. Provide even wayfinding light, check thresholds and corners, and give operators the ability to adjust scenes for different uses. | Review the installed space at different times of day and with representative users. Record glare, shadow, visibility and control problems rather than relying only on a drawing review. |
| Sound | Where can conversations be overheard? Do alarms, mechanical noise or crowd noise make a person feel exposed or unable to orient themselves? Are there quieter alternatives? | Coordinate room adjacencies, partitions, doors, ceilings, seals and mechanical equipment. Offer a mix of social and lower-stimulation areas instead of treating acoustic treatment as a single finish package. | Walk the building during both quiet and busy periods. Ask users whether they can find privacy, hear essential information and avoid unwanted attention. |
| Crowdedness | Where do queues, pinch points and uncontrolled crossings occur? Can someone pause or take another route without being trapped in a crowd? | Model arrival, queuing, circulation and peak use. Separate conflicting flows, preserve passing and waiting space, and provide alternative routes or rooms where the program allows. | Use a supervised walkthrough or temporary layout mock-up. Observe peak events and adjust furniture, barriers, scheduling or staffing as well as permanent construction. |
Where the approach applies
Homes and residential projects
The ASLA announcement describing the original survey lists home among the everyday settings under consideration. In housing, inclusion reaches beyond the unit: entrances, mail areas, laundry rooms, lifts, parking, shared gardens and management practices all shape whether a resident can arrive and use amenities without unwanted scrutiny. Construction teams can review sightlines, lighting transitions, acoustic privacy and the location of waiting or meeting areas with residents and operators before fixing the plan.

Workplaces
At work, a gendered experience may arise in reception, open offices, changing facilities, toilets, break rooms or a route that forces everyone through a busy security point. The project supports asking how different people read those spaces, then coordinating partitions, doors, lighting, acoustics, circulation and facilities policy. A contractor should document operational assumptions—such as who controls access, when cleaning occurs and how temporary closures are communicated—because a well-detailed room can still become exclusionary through its management.

Schools and public buildings
Schools, libraries, civic buildings and cultural venues combine scheduled activity with unpredictable public use. Design reviews should include arrival, dismissal, assemblies, waiting, emergency movement and quieter alternatives. Do not treat one “inclusive” room as the answer if the route to it is conspicuous, distant or unavailable during ordinary hours.
Public space and recreation
Parks, trails, sports facilities and event venues expose the interaction between physical form and operations. Check lighting continuity, acoustically legible information, crowd surges, staff visibility and the availability of places to pause. Programming, stewarding and opening hours belong in the same conversation as paving, planting, seating and enclosures.
Campus housing, restrooms and gathering spaces
A March 19, 2024 session listed by the Society for College and University Planning applied the topic to campus housing, restrooms and gathering spaces. Presenters Melissa Falkenstien and Jennifer Nelson Martinez of UC Irvine, with Elizabeth MacPherson Hearn and K Kaczmarek of Mithun, described programming, operations and renovation strategies alongside physical design. This is an application to higher education, not evidence that the original project was limited to campuses.
For a campus project, review residence-hall entries, shared kitchens, study rooms, toilet and shower arrangements, event spaces, signage, maintenance response and the way room assignments are administered. Include student life, housing, custodial, security and accessibility staff in the same process as the design and construction team.

A project process that keeps inclusion from becoming a late change
- Write an experience-based brief. Ask who may feel watched, misread, rushed or unable to retreat. Include home, work, school, public and recreation scenarios where relevant, not only the most visible room.
- Invite people with relevant lived experience early. Pay participants for their time where possible, explain how comments will affect decisions and offer anonymous channels for sensitive feedback. Do not require anyone to speak for every trans, nonbinary, gender-nonconforming or queer person.
- Map light, sound and crowdedness. Mark bright-dark transitions, noisy plant rooms, echoing surfaces, queue locations, pinch points and places where a person must choose between exposure and isolation. Compare normal, peak and after-hours conditions.
- Develop more than one workable option. Present alternatives for routes, waiting, privacy, acoustic refuge and lighting control. Explain cost, program, maintenance and code implications without implying that the cheapest option is neutral.
- Test at full scale where risk is high. Use temporary partitions, furniture, sample doors, lighting scenes or acoustic mock-ups. Invite users to move through the sequence and describe what they notice.
- Coordinate the details and the operating plan. Put responsibilities for controls, cleaning, access, signage, room booking, incident response and temporary closures into the project documents. A construction handover should include settings and procedures, not only equipment schedules.
- Review after occupancy. Collect voluntary, privacy-protective feedback at different times and during different events. Log recurring concerns, identify whether the cause is physical or operational, and assign a person and date for corrective action.
Design and construction checks by building element
Entrances and thresholds
Check whether the main entrance offers a clear, dignified route for every user and whether security, reception or turnstiles create a conspicuous secondary route. Use lighting and acoustics to support orientation without making the arrival sequence feel like a stage. Confirm that temporary construction barriers do not force occupants into unsafe or highly exposed paths.
Toilets, showers and changing areas
Review the whole journey: finding the facility, entering, storing belongings, changing, washing, exiting and reaching a private place afterward. Coordinate privacy, ventilation, cleaning access, emergency communication and signage. Avoid treating a single room as a complete solution if its location or opening hours mark users as different.
Circulation, queues and gathering
Draw the routes people actually take, including informal shortcuts and event-day lines. Provide places to pause without blocking movement and avoid layouts in which a person must cross a dense group to reach a basic service. Furniture, ropes, temporary barriers and staffing can change crowdedness as much as the permanent plan.
Controls, maintenance and handover
Give facilities staff usable controls for lighting and ventilation, clear acoustic maintenance requirements and a way to report failures without exposing a complainant. Include commissioning checks for doors, seals, fixtures, alarms and wayfinding. Record who can change settings and how users will be told when a space is temporarily unavailable.
How to evaluate an outcome without pretending to have a universal score
Use a small set of repeatable questions tied to the project’s goals: Can occupants find their way? Can they choose between social contact and lower stimulation? Can they hear essential information and obtain reasonable privacy? Do they report safety, comfort and belonging in their own words? Compare responses across times, spaces and user groups, while protecting anonymity.

Combine conversations, observation and maintenance records. A complaint about a crowded corridor may point to scheduling, furniture or staffing rather than a wall that must be rebuilt. Conversely, repeated reports of glare, echo or unwanted exposure may justify a physical change. Keep demographic information optional and secure, and never publish a small subgroup’s comments in a way that could identify individuals.
Limits, ethics and responsible claims
Mithun’s project does not provide a permanent classification of people, a universal specification or proof that one intervention guarantees safety. Its four analytical groups are explicitly imperfect and capable of change. Its summaries also call for deeper intersectional work and further study of responses to violence.
Use the findings to broaden participation and improve decisions, not to replace building regulations, accessibility requirements, safeguarding policies or direct consultation. Explain what has been heard, what changed, what could not change and who owns the next decision. That transparency helps prevent inclusion from becoming a branding exercise.

What construction leaders should carry into the next project
Start with lived experience, then make it buildable. Ask how light, sound and crowdedness will be perceived by different occupants; test those conditions before the walls are closed; coordinate the physical details with programming and operations; and keep listening after handover. That sequence turns Designing Beyond the Binary from an abstract principle into a practical discipline for delivering places where more people can feel safe, comfortable and that they belong.
