A veneer covers the visible front of a tooth to change its appearance. An inlay restores damage within a tooth when a routine filling may not be enough but a crown may be more coverage than needed. They are not alternatives for the same problem: the right choice depends on where the tooth is damaged, how much healthy structure remains, and your oral health.
What is the difference between a veneer and an inlay?
| Feature | Veneer | Inlay |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Improve a tooth’s appearance by covering its front surface. | Restore damage within a prepared tooth. |
| Where it goes | On the facial, or front, surface of the tooth. | Inside the tooth’s prepared biting surface, without covering its cusps. |
| Typical reason to consider it | To mask issues such as chips, stains, gaps, or an irregular shape. | When damage is too extensive for a simple filling but does not call for a crown. |
| How it is made | Porcelain veneers are custom-made; composite may be built up directly on the tooth. | Made outside the mouth and fitted to the prepared tooth; a lab or in-office CAD/CAM workflow may be used. |
| What to weigh | Appearance, enamel removal, material, bite, and whether the tooth and gums are healthy. | Extent and location of damage, remaining tooth structure, material, and whether an inlay, onlay, or crown is appropriate. |
These are different treatments, not interchangeable labels. A dentist needs to examine the tooth and your oral health before recommending one. The American Dental Association’s veneer guidance explains veneer options and care; Cleveland Clinic’s overview of inlays and onlays describes their restorative use.

What are veneers, and what do they treat?
A veneer is a thin, custom covering bonded to the front of a tooth. Veneers may be used to change the appearance of chipped, stained, spaced, or misshapen teeth. They are primarily cosmetic: they do not necessarily strengthen or repair a tooth, and they do not prevent decay from developing around or beneath the restoration. See Cleveland Clinic’s dental veneer overview.

- Porcelain: Custom-made and tooth-colored, porcelain can provide a natural-looking result and is generally strong and long-lasting. It tends to cost more. Treatment commonly involves removing a small amount of enamel, taking an impression or digital scan, fabricating the veneer, checking its fit and shape, and bonding it in place.
- Composite: Composite resin can be bonded and shaped directly on the tooth, then light-cured, smoothed, and polished. It may require less enamel removal and fewer visits than porcelain, and repairs can be easier. It is less resistant to staining and wear.
When enamel is removed, veneer treatment is not reversible. The amount of preparation and the best material depend on the tooth and the treatment plan.

When to address other oral-health issues first
Tooth decay and gum disease should be treated before veneer placement. Tell your dentist about grinding, clenching, bite discomfort, or habits such as biting hard objects; these can affect whether veneers are suitable and how they should be cared for. Veneers may chip, crack, loosen, or wear, and can require repair or replacement.
What is an inlay, and when might a dentist recommend one?
An inlay is an indirect restoration: it is made outside the mouth and fitted into a prepared area within the tooth. It is generally considered when decay or damage is too extensive for a routine filling, but the tooth does not need a crown. An inlay restores the tooth’s interior without covering its cusps.

How an inlay differs from an onlay or crown
- Inlay: Fits within the tooth and does not cover a cusp.
- Onlay: Extends over one or more cusps.
- Crown: Covers the entire tooth.
The choice depends on the pattern and extent of damage and the amount of sound tooth structure. These restorations are not simply different names for the same treatment. The ADA defines these terms in its glossary of dental clinical and administrative terms.
Materials and appointment flow
Inlays may be made from gold or tooth-colored porcelain or ceramic. Material choice is case-specific: appearance, strength, location, cost, and the dentist’s technique all matter. The ADA’s overview of dental filling materials describes broad tradeoffs among restorative materials; no single material is best for every tooth.

A common indirect workflow uses an impression and laboratory fabrication, often requiring two visits. Some practices use CAD/CAM equipment to design and make an inlay for placement in one appointment. Availability and timing vary by practice and case. The ADA says gold fillings, also called inlays or onlays, usually last “20 years or more”; this is general guidance, not a lifespan guarantee for an individual restoration. See the ADA’s gold fillings guidance.

- Where is the problem? A front-surface appearance concern may prompt a veneer discussion; structural damage within a tooth may call for a filling, inlay, onlay, or crown.
- How much tooth structure is affected? Ask how much sound enamel or tooth would need to be removed and how much coverage the proposed restoration provides.
- What material fits the case? Compare appearance, durability, staining or wear, repairability, and cost for the specific tooth and restoration.
- What could affect the outcome? Discuss grinding, bite issues, decay, gum health, and any other treatment needed first.
- What will the process involve? Ask how many visits are expected, how the restoration is made, and what insurance may cover. Costs and coverage vary by location and individual plan.
For any dental treatment, seek care from a licensed dentist who can diagnose the tooth and discuss risks and options. The ADA warns that services that remove the dentist from veneer treatment can expose patients to complications, including infection and nerve damage. Avoid DIY veneer products as a substitute for professional care.

What care is needed after a veneer or inlay?
Follow the dentist’s instructions for the specific restoration. For veneers, the ADA recommends brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth, avoiding hard-biting habits, and using a sports mouthguard when appropriate. If your bite feels uncomfortable after placement, contact the dentist rather than trying to adjust the restoration yourself.
