Use denatured alcohol for tasks such as thinning shellac or cleaning shellac brushes; acetone may suit certain adhesive-residue, resin and fiberglass jobs. Before using either, check the exact product’s label and safety data sheet (SDS), along with the surface or coating manufacturer’s instructions. Both solvents are flammable.
Are denatured alcohol and acetone the same?
No. Acetone is a specific chemical compound. Denatured alcohol is a category of alcohol products—typically ethanol made unsuitable for drinking by adding denaturants. Those ingredients vary by product, so the name alone does not tell you the complete formulation.
For example, Greenfield Global’s SDS for its SDAG-10, 95% VOL product lists 84.2% ethanol and 8.8% acetone by weight. That describes this named product only; it is not a general recipe for denatured alcohol. Check the label and SDS for the solvent you have. (Greenfield Global SDAG-10 SDS, revised December 14, 2023.)
Which solvent is suited to the job?
Choose by task and substrate rather than assuming one solvent is universally stronger or more effective. The cited sources describe uses for particular jobs, but do not establish a controlled, universal performance ranking.
#1 Best Overall
- Use as a fuel for marine stoves
- Use in appliances designed to burn liquid alcohol
- Not intended for use in kerosene or oil burning devices
- Follow all manufacturer's directions
| Job | Supported direction | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Thin shellac or clean shellac brushes | Denatured alcohol | Milwaukee lists these uses; follow the finish product’s instructions for the appropriate thinner. (Milwaukee guidance.) |
| Remove selected adhesive residue, polyester resin or fiberglass residue | Acetone may be suitable | Milwaukee identifies these uses, but warns acetone can damage some plastics and vinyl. Check the substrate and product directions first. (Milwaukee guidance.) |
| Prepare Durasein solid surface during fabrication | Durasein prefers denatured alcohol; it recommends acetone where denatured alcohol cannot be used | This is specific to Durasein solid surface, not a general countertop-cleaning rule. Apply the solvent to a white cloth or paper towel, not directly to the surface. (Durasein technical bulletin, April 14, 2023.) |
| Clean inks, resins, adhesives or contact cement | A specialty supplier describes acetone as a fast-acting option | Supplier product information is not a guarantee that acetone will work on every adhesive or be safe for every substrate. (Supplier product information.) |
| Clean glass or metal | Denatured alcohol is among supplier-listed uses | Check the item’s finish and cleaning instructions. (Supplier product information.) |
What surfaces can they damage?
Use particular care with acetone around plastics and vinyl
Milwaukee warns that acetone can melt plastic vinyl and soften or dissolve many plastics, including Plexiglas. Do not treat it as a general-purpose plastic cleaner. (Milwaukee guidance.)
Check denatured alcohol’s color and formulation
For its solid surface, Durasein warns that purple dye in purple denatured alcohol can stain fabrics and sometimes plastics; its bulletin recommends white denatured alcohol for that application. This is material-specific advice, not a universal rule for other surfaces. (Durasein technical bulletin.)

- Recommended As A Solvent, Thinner And Cleaner. Dissolves Ink And Various Other Stains. Denatured Alcohol Cleans Glass.
- Many Industrial And Technical Uses, Can Be Used As A Cleaner, Solvent, Additive, Etc.
- Use only as directed

Follow the instructions for the exact material and product
For other materials or finishes, compatibility is not established here. Consult both the surface or coating manufacturer and the solvent’s current label and SDS. Test only if their instructions allow it; suitability on one surface does not establish suitability on another.

Both solvents are flammable. Keep them away from heat, sparks and open flames, and follow the exact product’s instructions for ventilation, protective equipment, first aid and disposal.

- Close the container after dispensing. Durasein’s fabrication bulletin directs users to close the container after use.
- Apply solvent to a cloth for Durasein wipe-cleaning. Durasein specifies a white cloth or paper towel rather than applying solvent directly to the solid surface.
- Dispose of contaminated cloths as directed. Follow the solvent manufacturer’s disposal instructions and applicable local requirements.
- Use the SDS for the product in hand. Greenfield classifies its specific SDAG-10 formulation as a highly flammable liquid and vapor that causes serious eye irritation; those classifications should not be generalized to every denatured-alcohol product. (Greenfield Global SDAG-10 SDS, revised December 14, 2023.)
The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water lists acetone’s flash point as -18°C and its boiling point as 56.5°C in a profile last updated May 19, 2026. These are properties of acetone, not a comparative measure of cleaning effectiveness. (Australian government acetone profile.)

A quick decision checklist
- Identify the material, coating and residue you need to clean—or the finish you need to thin.
- Check the finish, surface and solvent product instructions for compatibility.
- Use denatured alcohol for shellac-related work when the finish maker’s directions call for it; consider acetone only for a compatible task such as selected adhesive or resin cleanup.
- Review the exact product’s SDS, then follow its handling, ventilation and disposal directions.
