Holly or Paperwhites for December Birth Flowers? A Practical Homeowner’s Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

December birth flowers usually come down to two choices: holly and Paperwhite narcissus. Both fit the season, but they solve very different problems for a homeowner. Paperwhites are the fast indoor option: plant the bulbs in a bowl or pot, give them bright light and controlled water, and you can have fragrant white blooms in about 4 to 6 weeks. Holly is the long-term outdoor option: an evergreen screen, berry display, foundation planting, rain-garden shrub, or winter focal point that may live for decades if the site is right.

For a December birthday gift, paperwhites are usually the easiest answer. For a permanent landscape improvement, holly is the stronger choice. On our job sites, we treat holly less like a “holiday plant” and more like a small construction decision because it can involve soil correction, drainage, grading, irrigation, lighting, bed edging, utilities, sightlines, and future maintenance access.

The practical question is not which December birth flower is more symbolic. It is which one fits the site, budget, timeline, and level of permanence you want.

Quick Answer: Which December Birth Flower Should You Choose?

Choose paperwhites if you want indoor blooms for a December birthday, holiday table, windowsill, office, or gift. They are inexpensive, quick, and low-risk. A small paperwhite project can cost about $15 to $45 for loose bulbs, pebbles, and a container, or about $20 to $50+ for a prepackaged kit depending on container quality, bulb count, shipping, and retailer.

Choose holly if you want outdoor structure, winter berries, privacy, curb appeal, wildlife value, or a more permanent landscape upgrade. A simple DIY holly planting might cost $35 to $150 per shrub for common nursery sizes, plus soil amendments and mulch. A professionally installed holly bed can range from a few hundred dollars for a small planting to several thousand dollars when grading, drainage, irrigation, lighting, edging, or hardscape work is included.

Option Best For Typical Timeline Typical 2026 Cost DIY Difficulty
Paperwhite narcissus Indoor birthday gift, holiday decor, winter blooms Blooms about 4-6 weeks after planting $2-$5 per loose bulb; $20-$50+ for many kits Easy
Holly shrub or tree Outdoor structure, berries, screening, foundation beds Plant in spring or fall in many regions; visual impact grows over years $35-$150+ per shrub retail; installed projects commonly start in the hundreds Moderate to advanced
Designed holly landscape bed Curb appeal, privacy, drainage-sensitive areas, commercial entries Planning and install often take 1-3 days for small projects Often $1,000-$5,000+ depending on access, soil, irrigation, grading, and plant count Best handled by a pro

Paperwhites: The Fast Indoor December Flower

Paperwhite narcissus are one of the most reliable indoor winter bulbs because they do not need the long cold treatment that many spring bulbs require. That matters if you are trying to hit a December birthday, holiday dinner, or winter open house without starting months in advance.

In normal indoor forcing conditions, expect flowers in about 4 to 6 weeks after planting. Some bulbs may bloom closer to 3 to 5 weeks in warm, bright indoor conditions, but 4 to 6 weeks is the safer planning window. If the birthday is December 15, plant the first container in early November. If you want blooms across the whole month, plant a second container about 10 days later and a third container 10 days after that.

How to Plant Paperwhites Indoors

Paperwhites can grow in a shallow watertight bowl with stones, pebbles, glass marbles, or gravel. They can also grow in a container with a soilless potting mix. The simplest method is a 4- to 6-inch-deep bowl with 2 to 3 inches of clean stones in the bottom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the bulbs close together with the pointed tips up. Add water only until it reaches the base of the bulbs. The roots should be able to reach moisture, but the bulb itself should not sit underwater. That small detail prevents a lot of rot. If the bulb base is submerged for days, the display can sour before it ever flowers.

For a fuller display, use 5 to 7 bulbs in a 6-inch bowl or 8 to 12 bulbs in a wider centerpiece container. Place the container in bright indirect light while roots develop. Once the shoots are several inches tall, move it to a cooler bright room to keep the stems stronger.

How to Keep Paperwhites From Flopping

Paperwhites stretch when they are too warm or not getting enough light. The usual result is a tall, fragrant display that leans across the table by week two. We see the same principle in construction staging: temporary work looks best when the support is planned before it starts leaning.

Use these controls:

  • Start bulbs in bright light after roots appear.
  • Keep them out of overheated rooms when possible; cooler rooms extend bloom life.
  • Rotate the container every day or two so stems do not lean hard toward one window.
  • Use a simple bamboo stake, twine ring, or decorative branch support if stems pass 14 to 18 inches.
  • For experienced gardeners, an alcohol-water technique can reduce stem height by roughly one-third to one-half without reducing flower size, fragrance, or bloom life when done correctly.

Paperwhites also have a strong scent. Some people love it. Some do not. For a gift, that matters. A paperwhite bowl is better near an entry, kitchen window, or bright side table than in a small bedroom or closed office.

What to Do After Paperwhites Bloom

In cold-winter regions, paperwhite bulbs forced indoors should usually be treated as finished after flowering. They are short-term decor, not a reliable outdoor perennial in most northern climates. Once the flowers fade, compost the spent foliage and bulbs if your local system accepts them, or dispose of them with yard waste according to local rules.

If you live in a warm region where paperwhites are adapted outdoors, you may be able to plant them outside after bloom, but forced bulbs are already depleted. They may take time to recover, and results are not guaranteed.

Holly: The Long-Term December Birth Flower for the Landscape

Holly is the December birth flower that belongs in a construction-minded landscape plan. It can define an entry walk, screen a neighbor, anchor a foundation bed, mark a property edge, add winter berries, and give structure when perennials have disappeared for the season.

The biggest mistake is buying a holly by the nursery pot instead of by the mature plant size. A 3-gallon shrub might look small at installation, but depending on species and cultivar it can become a 6-foot, 10-foot, or 15-foot plant. Some tree-form hollies grow much larger. We lay out holly beds from mature dimensions first, then work backward to container size and budget.

Not All Hollies Are the Same

The word “holly” covers a wide group of plants. For residential landscapes, these are the types homeowners most often compare:

  • American holly: A native evergreen holly used for structure, screening, and winter character in suitable Eastern U.S. sites. It can become a substantial tree, so it needs room.
  • Inkberry holly: A native evergreen shrub often used for smaller massing, foundation beds, and naturalistic designs. It has a softer look than many spiny hollies.
  • Winterberry holly: A native deciduous holly grown for bright winter berries. It drops its leaves, so it is not an evergreen screen, but the berry display can be excellent.
  • Yaupon holly: A durable holly for warmer regions, useful in hedges, small tree forms, and tough urban conditions when regionally appropriate.
  • Japanese and hybrid hollies: Common nursery options for formal hedges and foundation plantings, but suitability varies by climate, drainage, and maintenance expectations.

Winterberry is especially useful in wet or compacted areas. It can tolerate moist to wet soil, poorly drained soil, and compacted soil better than many common shrubs. It is hardy across a wide range, commonly listed for USDA Zones 3 to 9, and can grow roughly 3 to 15 feet tall and wide depending on cultivar. It prefers acidic soil, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.5.

Plan Male and Female Hollies if You Want Berries

Most hollies are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are on separate plants. The female plant produces berries, but it usually needs a compatible male plant nearby for pollination. This is where many attractive nursery purchases disappoint people.

If berries are part of the goal, the planting plan should name both the female cultivar and the compatible male cultivar. Bloom timing matters. A male holly that flowers at the wrong time may not pollinate the female plants well. As a design rule, we confirm the cultivar pairing before ordering plants, not after the bed is excavated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For many residential projects, one male plant can pollinate multiple female plants if it is close enough and blooms at the same time. The exact ratio depends on cultivar and site conditions, but a common practical layout is one compatible male for several females within the same landscape area.

Cost: Paperwhites vs Holly in 2026

Paperwhites are a low-cost seasonal project. Loose bulbs commonly run about $2 to $5 per bulb depending on size, variety, quantity, and shipping. Small kits often land around $20 to $30, while nicer kits with decorative planters can run $30 to $50+. If you already own a bowl, the budget is mostly bulbs and stones.

Holly has a wider cost range because the plant is only one part of the work. Retail holly shrubs commonly start around $35 to $75 for smaller nursery containers and can reach $100 to $150+ for larger, more developed plants. Larger specimen hollies, tree-form plants, delivery, and professional installation raise the total quickly.

Winterberry Seeds for Planting | 100 Seeds | Red Berry Native Holly Shrub
  • Bright Red Winter Berries: 100 Winterberry seeds for planting grow Ilex verticillata, a native deciduous holly famous for clusters of brilliant red berries on bare winter branches. Deep green summer foliage, creamy white flowers and vivid fruit provide changing seasonal color in native gardens and landscapes
  • Native Deciduous Holly: Winterberry produces small greenish white to creamy white flowers followed by brilliant red fruit on pollinated female plants. Unlike evergreen hollies, the green leaves drop in fall to reveal clusters of colorful berries that can remain prominently displayed throughout the winter
  • Male and Female Plants: Winterberry is dioecious, so separate male and female plants are required for berry production. A compatible male must flower nearby at the same time to pollinate female flowers, and plants grown from seed cannot reliably be identified as male or female until they mature
  • 6 to 12 Foot Shrub: Mature Winterberry shrubs commonly grow approximately 6 to 12 feet tall and wide, depending on genetics and growing conditions. Their upright to rounded branching habit creates a substantial native shrub for landscape borders, wildlife gardens and naturalized plantings
  • Moist Soil Native: Winterberry naturally grows in moist environments and performs well in consistently moist, acidic soil. Plant in full sun to partial shade, with stronger sunlight generally supporting heavier flowering and fruiting when compatible male and female plants are present

Item Typical 2026 Range Notes
Loose paperwhite bulbs $2-$5 per bulb Best value for DIY bowls and staggered plantings
Paperwhite kit $20-$50+ Price depends on planter, bulb count, and shipping
Small holly shrub $35-$75 each Often 2- to 3-gallon nursery stock
Larger holly shrub $100-$150+ each Better instant impact, heavier handling
Mulch and soil amendments $50-$250 for small beds Depends on bed size, soil test, and amendment needs
Professional shrub installation Often several hundred dollars and up Access, plant size, soil, hauling, and layout drive labor
Designed bed with grading, edging, irrigation, or lighting $1,000-$5,000+ Common when the work ties into hardscape or drainage

National landscaping cost data varies because projects vary. A homeowner planting three small hollies in an open bed is not buying the same service as a client rebuilding a front entry with irrigation, low-voltage lighting, drainage correction, and a 40-foot evergreen screen. The site conditions drive the real number.

Where Holly Works Best Around a House

Holly performs best when the site is matched to the plant. Before we install it, we look at sun exposure, roof runoff, soil compaction, utility locations, mature width, window height, walkway clearance, and how the bed will be maintained five years from now.

Foundation Plantings

Holly can work well near foundations, but spacing matters. Do not plant a holly that matures at 8 feet wide only 18 inches off the wall. That creates moisture problems, pruning problems, and blocked windows. As a general working rule, keep the center of the plant at least half the mature width away from the structure, then add room for air movement and maintenance access.

For a holly expected to mature 6 feet wide, the center should usually be at least 3 feet from the wall, and often more. For a larger holly, increase that distance. Keep shrubs below sill height where security, visibility, and natural light matter.

Privacy Screens and Property Edges

Evergreen hollies can make strong privacy screens, but they are not instant fences. A young 3-gallon plant may need several seasons to knit into a hedge. For screening, we lay out plants based on mature spread and desired density. Planting too close gives fast coverage but leads to crowding, disease pressure, and heavy pruning later.

Also check property lines, easements, and sightlines. Corner lots, driveways, sidewalks, and commercial entries need clear visibility. A hedge that looks harmless at 30 inches tall can become a traffic hazard at 6 feet.

Wet Areas, Rain Gardens, and Drainage Edges

Winterberry holly is often the better December-birth-flower choice for damp areas. It can handle moist soil and seasonal wetness better than many evergreen hollies. That makes it useful near rain gardens, drainage swales, pond edges, and low spots where the owner wants winter color.

Still, “wet tolerant” does not mean “plant it in a construction problem and walk away.” If water is collecting against the foundation, the answer is grading and drainage first. Plants can soften the result, but they should not be used to hide a water-management defect.

Safety, Pets, Utilities, and Permits

Paperwhites and hollies both deserve a safety check. Narcissus bulbs should be kept away from pets and children. Holly berries can be poisonous to people and pets, and holly ingestion may cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and depression in pets. If you have a dog that eats yard debris or a toddler who samples berries, place holly carefully or choose another shrub.

For outdoor holly planting, call 811 before digging. That applies even when the hole seems small. Utility depth is not something to guess from the surface. We photograph the marks and the intended planting layout before digging, then hand-dig carefully near marked utilities. Standard 811 locating generally covers public utilities, not every private line. Irrigation, landscape lighting, propane lines, private drainage, invisible dog fences, and detached-garage feeds may require private locating or careful owner documentation.

Permits are not usually required for planting a shrub bed, but related work can trigger rules. Irrigation systems may require permits or inspections in some jurisdictions. Retaining walls can require permits once they reach certain heights, and local thresholds vary. Some cities review walls around 3 to 4 feet, and some require engineering depending on surcharge, slope, drainage, or location. HOAs may also regulate front-yard plantings, hedge heights, exterior lighting, and changes near common areas.

For commercial properties, holly layout should also consider sign visibility, pedestrian clearance, snow storage, access routes, and CPTED visibility. A dense evergreen shrub can be attractive and still be wrong if it blocks a storefront sign or creates a hidden corner near an entry.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

Paperwhites are almost always a DIY project. If you can manage a watertight bowl, stones, bulbs, and a sunny window, you can grow them. The main decisions are timing, water level, scent placement, and whether to stagger plantings.

Holly can be DIY when the project is small, the site is clear, and the plant size is manageable. A homeowner can reasonably plant one to three small shrubs in an existing bed after calling 811, checking mature dimensions, and improving the soil as needed. Use a planting hole about two to three times the width of the root ball and no deeper than the root ball height. The root flare should not be buried. Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep, but keep mulch pulled back from the stem.

Hire a pro when the holly planting ties into drainage, grading, irrigation, lighting, retaining edges, hardscape, large specimens, steep slopes, compacted builder-grade soil, or a formal hedge that must line up cleanly. Also hire help if the planting area is near utilities, a driveway sight triangle, a commercial entrance, or a foundation drainage issue.

On our projects, the most common holly corrections are not exotic. They are basic construction coordination problems: plants set too deep, shrubs placed too close to walls, buried downspout outlets, irrigation heads blocked by new plantings, mulch piled against stems, and hedges installed without room for mature width. Fixing those later costs more than laying the bed out correctly the first time.

A Simple December Birth Flower Plan

If you want the best of both December birth flowers, use paperwhites for the immediate indoor moment and holly for the long-term landscape. They do not compete; they work on different timelines.

For a December birthday, plant paperwhite bulbs 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Use a 6-inch bowl with 5 to 7 bulbs for a compact gift or centerpiece. Keep the water at the bulb base, not over it. Start additional containers every 10 days if you want blooms into January.

For holly, start with site selection, not shopping. Decide whether you need evergreen screening, winter berries, native habitat value, wet-soil tolerance, deer resistance, or compact foundation structure. Then choose the species and cultivar. Confirm mature size, sun needs, soil pH, male-female pairing for berries, and utility constraints before buying plants.

If the holly is part of a larger curb-appeal project, sequence it with the built work. Rough grading, drainage, conduit, irrigation sleeves, retaining edges, and hardscape should be settled before final planting. Plants should be the finish layer, not an obstacle the crew has to work around.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final Recommendation

For most homeowners, paperwhites are the right December birth flower for a gift, table, windowsill, or short-term winter bloom. They are affordable, fast, and easy to schedule. The main cautions are fragrance, pets, water level, and floppy stems.

Holly is the better choice when the goal is a lasting outdoor improvement. It can add winter structure, berries, privacy, wildlife value, and curb appeal, but only when the right holly is matched to the right site. Budget for the whole installation, not just the shrub. That means soil, mulch, spacing, water, drainage, utilities, access, and future maintenance.

Handled that way, December’s birth flowers become more than a seasonal symbol. Paperwhites bring the winter bloom indoors now. Holly builds the landscape value outside for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do paperwhites take to bloom indoors?

Paperwhites typically bloom about 4 to 6 weeks after planting indoors. For a December birthday, plant bulbs in early to mid-November, then stagger additional containers every 10 days for a longer winter bloom season.

Do you need male and female holly plants for berries?

Usually, yes. Most hollies are dioecious, so female plants generally need a compatible male plant nearby to produce berries. Cultivar compatibility and bloom timing should be confirmed before planting.

Are holly berries safe for pets?

No. Holly berries can be poisonous to people and pets, and ingestion may cause vomiting, diarrhea, or depression in pets. Avoid berrying hollies in areas where pets or small children are likely to eat fallen fruit.

Do I need to call 811 before planting holly shrubs?

Yes. Call 811 before digging for outdoor shrub installation. Photograph utility markings and planting locations, hand-dig near marked utilities, and remember that private lines such as irrigation, lighting, and drainage may need separate locating.

When should I hire a pro for holly planting?

Hire a pro when holly planting involves grading, drainage, irrigation, lighting, retaining walls, large shrubs, utility conflicts, commercial visibility, or formal screening. Small shrubs in an existing clear bed are more reasonable for DIY.
