DB Cargo, ACTS and their Swiss operating partners have launched regular construction-material trains between Luterbach and Lugano. The service, reported as starting in mid-August 2026, sends gravel and sand south to an asphalt producer in Ticino and returns with excavation material for the Vigier landfill in Flumenthal. Trucks cover collection and delivery, while ACTS roll-off containers make horizontal transfers possible at sites without a rail siding.
What do the new Swiss construction trains carry?
The operation is designed as a two-way flow rather than a one-direction delivery service. Southbound trains carry gravel and sand components from Luterbach to an asphalt producer in Ticino. On the northbound leg, excavation material collected from construction sites around Ticino travels to the Vigier landfill in Flumenthal.

| Leg | Material | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Luterbach to Lugano | Gravel and sand | Supply for an asphalt producer in Ticino |
| Lugano and wider Ticino to Flumenthal | Excavation material | Disposal at the Vigier landfill |
Using a return load is intended to improve wagon and train utilisation and avoid an empty northbound movement. The companies have not published verified tonnage, truck-equivalent volumes, operating costs or carbon savings for this specific service.
How does the rail-and-truck operation work?
Rail handles the long central section, while trucks perform the first and last mile. ACTS supplies the roll-off-container system and coordinates customer service and road feeders with GB Green Bizzozero and Fratelli Bizzozero.

Collection at construction sites
A truck places or collects an ACTS roll-off container at a construction site, quarry or production facility. Because the container can be transferred horizontally, the site does not need a dedicated rail siding or lifting crane.
Transfer to the rail leg
The loaded container is moved by road to the rail terminal, transferred horizontally onto the train and hauled between the Swiss locations by DB Cargo. The same process is reversed at the destination.

Delivery and return movement
At the receiving facility, a road vehicle takes the container to its final point. Empty or newly loaded containers can then support the return flow, allowing excavation material from Ticino to move north for disposal.
How often will the trains run?
The initial plan calls for at least one round trip each week. A second weekly round trip may be added when demand requires it. That frequency is a planning commitment reported by ACTS and DB Cargo, not a guarantee that every future week will operate at the higher level.

The flexible schedule is significant for construction logistics, where demand can vary with excavation schedules, asphalt production and project phases. It also limits the service’s usefulness for sites that need daily departures or tightly timed, just-in-time deliveries.
Which company is responsible for each part?
| Organisation | Reported role |
|---|---|
| ACTS AG | Roll-off-container system, customer service and road-feeder coordination |
| DB Cargo Full Load Solutions Switzerland | Traffic concept, planning, coordination and forwarding |
| DB Cargo Switzerland | Rail traction and Swiss production operations |
| GB Green Bizzozero and Fratelli Bizzozero | ACTS partners for customer service and Ticino road legs |
Roman Bock, site manager of DB Cargo Full Load Solutions Switzerland, said the partners were combining rail’s strengths with the reliability and flexibility required for large construction-material flows. Oliver Schwob of ACTS described the project as an example of combined transport for construction and disposal logistics and said the model could support further traffic in construction, waste and raw-material markets.
Why is horizontal container transfer important?
Traditional rail freight often requires a customer-owned siding, terminal access or lifting equipment. ACTS containers are designed to be moved horizontally between compatible road and rail equipment. That broadens the potential customer base to construction sites and production locations that are connected to the road network but not directly to rail.
- Access: sites without a rail siding can still use the rail line haul.
- Handling: horizontal transfer reduces dependence on a fixed crane at the job site.
- Routing: trucks remain responsible for short local movements, while rail covers the longer distance.
- Coordination: one forwarding concept must align containers, road vehicles, terminals and train paths.
What does the service mean for Swiss construction logistics?
The route creates a practical link between supply and disposal: mineral material moves toward Ticino, while excavated material returns toward a landfill in the north. That structure can make a combined-transport service more viable than a one-way train, although the companies have not disclosed the volume threshold or utilisation level needed to sustain it.

For comparison with an all-truck option, the relevant questions are how much of the line haul can shift to rail, whether the project site can be served by road feeders, whether a return load is available, and whether weekly departures match the construction programme. Responsibility is also split among forwarding, traction, container handling and local trucking providers, so customers need clarity on who books each element.
Is this connected to Switzerland’s wider rail-freight trend?
DB Cargo’s Swiss overview reports that rail carried 68.6% of trans-Alpine freight in 2025, down from 70.3% in 2024. That is a national trans-Alpine figure, not a measurement of the Luterbach–Lugano service and not evidence of its carbon performance.
The partners say they are examining additional Swiss routes and customer projects in construction, waste and raw-material logistics. No timetable, route list or confirmed customers for those possible expansions has been announced.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When did the service start?
Contemporaneous 2026 company reports place the start in mid-August 2026. One secondary page describes the start as mid-August 2023, but that date conflicts with the 2026 announcements and appears to be an error. The 2026 date is therefore the reliable one for this launch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a construction site use the service without its own rail siding?
Yes. ACTS roll-off containers are transferred horizontally, so a truck can serve a road-accessible site and connect it to the rail leg. The site still needs suitable space and access for the container and road vehicle.
Does the service publish a guaranteed carbon saving?
No. The launch information does not provide a verified CO2 reduction, tonnage or truck-equivalent figure for this operation. National trans-Alpine rail-share statistics should not be treated as a result for this route.
What happens if demand exceeds one weekly round trip?
The operating plan allows a second round trip when demand is higher. Actual additions depend on available cargo, train paths and coordination among the forwarding, traction and road-feeder partners.
Where does the excavation material go?
Material collected from construction sites in Ticino is hauled north and delivered to the Vigier landfill in Flumenthal. Local trucks connect individual sites with the rail-connected handling points.
