At Greenbuild 2026 in New York City, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) senior policy counsel Elizabeth Beardsley described these measures as opportunities—not proof that sustainability alone can overcome local opposition.
Why is data-center sustainability becoming a community issue?
Data centers bring substantial building and energy demands into communities, but residents may not have enough information to understand how a proposed facility will affect them. In an interview at the 2026 Greenbuild International Conference + Expo, Beardsley said that owners and developers were recognizing a need for greater transparency. She also said that, in some cases, a lack of transparency had hindered engagement and harmed public sentiment.

The report also said USGBC launched the Greening AI Data Centers Coalition with other organizations earlier in 2026. It described the coalition as a global effort to set sector standards. How could clean energy and waste-heat reuse fit?
Beardsley pointed to renewable energy and reuse of waste heat as further opportunities.
