The DALI Alliance defines two separate Wireless to DALI Gateway specifications: Part 341 for Bluetooth mesh (listed as the Bluetooth NLC Gateway) and Part 342 for Zigbee. Each gateway joins one wireless ecosystem to wired DALI control gear, so an ecosystem controller can operate compatible luminaires and retrieve supported status or diagnostic data.
These are not Bluetooth-to-Zigbee bridges, and they do not turn wireless devices into DALI devices. The current Alliance catalog lists both specifications as version 1.04, dated September 2025. The documents are member-only, and the catalog records Q4 2025 for certification availability; those dates do not prove that any particular gateway is certified, stocked or suitable for a project.

What a Wireless to DALI Gateway is
A Wireless to DALI Gateway is an interface between a wireless building-control ecosystem and a wired DALI lighting installation. Devices on the wireless side communicate using their ecosystem protocol. On the DALI side, the gateway contains a DALI application controller connected to DALI control gear such as drivers and luminaires.

Depending on the specification and the product, a wireless controller can request light-output changes, fading and status information. DALI equipment can also expose information about lamp failures, luminaire state, energy and diagnostics through the gateway. The Alliance identifies DALI Parts 251–253 as the source of the luminaire, energy and diagnostics data that compatible equipment may report.

The relationship is deliberately one-way in architectural terms: the gateway exposes DALI equipment to the wireless ecosystem. It does not make wireless sensors, switches or other ecosystem devices appear as DALI devices. A DALI-side controller therefore cannot automatically discover and control every device in the wireless network.
Part 341 and Part 342: two ecosystem-specific specifications
| Specification | Wireless ecosystem | DALI side | Current catalog entry | What it is not |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Part 341 – Bluetooth NLC Gateway | Bluetooth mesh, identified in the listing as Bluetooth NLC | Wired DALI control gear | Version 1.04, September 2025; certification availability shown as Q4 2025 | A Zigbee bridge or a general-purpose Bluetooth-to-DALI product category with identical capabilities across vendors |
| Part 342 – Zigbee Gateway | Zigbee | Wired DALI control gear | Version 1.04, September 2025; certification availability shown as Q4 2025 | A Bluetooth mesh bridge or a replacement for DALI wiring |
The wireless protocol is the first selection decision. A project using a Bluetooth mesh ecosystem needs a Part 341 type of gateway; a project using Zigbee needs a Part 342 type. The Alliance FAQ states that there is no crossover between the wireless ecosystems. Installing one category does not provide interoperability with the other.
How the gateway handles control and data
Commands from the wireless system
Wireless controllers send supported lighting commands to the gateway. The gateway’s DALI application controller then issues the corresponding commands on the wired DALI side. Light-output control and fading are explicitly within the Alliance’s description of gateway functions. The exact command set, addressing behavior and user-interface features remain product and specification details that must be checked for the selected device.
Status and queries back to the wireless system
The same interface can carry selected information in the opposite direction: a wireless application may query DALI equipment and receive supported results. Lamp-failure information is one example identified by the Alliance. DALI control gear may also report luminaire, energy and diagnostic information associated with Parts 251–253.

Addressing and broadcast caveat
An Alliance technical blog published on 15 April 2021 described broadcast commands as the available mode at that time and mentioned individual addressing as a possible future specification change. That statement is historical. Do not use it to infer the behavior of a current Part 341 or Part 342 product; confirm addressing and grouping functions in the current specification and the manufacturer’s certification documentation.
Compatibility with DALI equipment
DALI-2 and D4i equipment
The Alliance FAQ indicates that DALI-2 and D4i control gear can be used with either gateway type. This describes the DALI equipment family, not a promise that every gateway exposes every feature. Check the gateway’s supported commands, query handling and reporting claims against the control gear selected for the project.
Legacy DALI version-1 drivers
Support for DALI version-1 drivers is optional. A gateway category alone is therefore insufficient evidence that older drivers will work. During design, record the exact driver model and determine whether the gateway supports it, which functions are available, and whether any status or diagnostic data is limited.

Wireless to DALI Gateways versus DALI+
Wireless to DALI Gateways and DALI+ solve different architectural problems. A Wireless to DALI Gateway preserves a wired DALI installation and attaches it to a separate wireless ecosystem. The wireless network remains the ecosystem on one side of the interface, while DALI control gear remains on the other.

DALI+ transports DALI commands over wireless or IP-based networks instead of using this gateway pattern. The Alliance identifies Thread as the initial DALI+ carrier. Therefore, a project choosing DALI+ is evaluating a different connectivity architecture, not selecting a Bluetooth or Zigbee gateway. Both approaches are described by the Alliance as connectivity options, but they should not be treated as interchangeable product labels.
Current specification and certification context
The Alliance specification catalog lists Part 341 and Part 342 at version 1.04 with a September 2025 date. The documents are marked as available to Alliance members. The catalog’s certification-availability field states Q4 2025 for both parts, while the Alliance status page includes both in its certification table.
Those entries establish the revision and program context, not the live status of an individual model. They do not provide a verified count of certified gateway products, retail inventory or regional availability. Before procurement, check the current Alliance status information and the product’s own certification record. A model advertised as a Bluetooth mesh or Zigbee gateway is not automatically a certified Part 341 or Part 342 implementation.
How to specify a gateway for a construction project
- Document the wireless ecosystem. Identify whether the controls, sensors and supervisory software use Bluetooth mesh or Zigbee. If the ecosystem is undecided, resolve that choice before selecting the gateway category.
- Inventory the DALI equipment. List each driver and luminaire family, including whether it is DALI-2, D4i or legacy DALI version 1. Do not assume that a mixed installation has uniform support.
- Define required functions. Write down the required light-output commands, fading, failure queries, energy data, diagnostics and any other reporting needed by the building-management or lighting-control application.
- Check the gateway’s conformance information. Match the model to Part 341 or Part 342, confirm the specification revision, and verify certification status rather than relying on a generic product description.
- Confirm addressing and grouping. Determine whether the product uses broadcast, individual addressing or another supported method. Historical statements about broadcast operation cannot substitute for current documentation.
- Check physical and electrical requirements. Confirm how the gateway is powered, how it connects to the DALI bus, where it can be installed, and what network topology the wireless ecosystem requires. These details are product-specific.
- Plan commissioning ownership. Establish who will create wireless groups, assign DALI control gear, test scenes and verify feedback. The wireless and DALI sides may use different tools or credentials.
- Test the complete data path. Commission a representative circuit and verify commands, fading, failure reporting and any Parts 251–253 data that the project depends on. Record results for handover.
Choosing between Bluetooth mesh and Zigbee gateway types
There is no universal performance winner established by the Alliance material. The practical choice follows the ecosystem already selected for the project, the control software that must integrate with it, and the gateway’s certified feature set.

| Decision question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which wireless network is already specified? | The gateway is ecosystem-specific; Bluetooth mesh and Zigbee variants are not crossover bridges. |
| Are the drivers DALI-2, D4i or version 1? | DALI-2 and D4i are compatible equipment categories, while version-1 support is optional and must be verified. |
| Which feedback is required? | Lamp failure, energy, luminaire and diagnostics reporting may depend on both the DALI gear and gateway implementation. |
| What addressing model is required? | Current product documentation is needed; a 2021 historical description of broadcast behavior is not a current guarantee. |
| What certification and supply evidence exists? | Catalog dates and planned certification availability do not prove that a particular model is certified or available in your region. |
Common specification and commissioning mistakes
Buying the wrong ecosystem variant
A Zigbee gateway cannot be substituted for a Bluetooth mesh gateway simply because both connect to DALI. Confirm the wireless protocol used by the controls and supervisory platform before ordering.
Assuming the gateway is a two-way universal bridge
The gateway exposes DALI equipment to the wireless ecosystem. It does not expose wireless devices as DALI devices. If a design requires DALI-side control of wireless sensors or switches, that requirement needs a different architecture.
Assuming every DALI driver is supported
Support for legacy DALI version-1 drivers is optional, and even compatible DALI-2 or D4i equipment may not expose every function through every product. Validate the actual driver and gateway combination.
Confusing specification status with product availability
A September 2025 version listing and a Q4 2025 certification-availability entry are not evidence that a model is currently stocked, certified in a particular market or appropriate for the project. Check live product-level records before approval.

Overpromising diagnostics or energy data
Parts 251–253 define data that DALI control gear can report, but the gateway must support passing the required data to the wireless application. Treat each data point as a commissioning requirement, not an automatic feature.
Practical answer for designers and contractors
Specify Part 341 when the building uses Bluetooth mesh and Part 342 when it uses Zigbee, keeping the DALI side wired in both cases. Use DALI-2 or D4i equipment where the gateway and project requirements support it, and separately verify any legacy version-1 drivers. Then confirm the exact model’s certification, power and topology requirements, command and query support, and reporting behavior.
If the project instead needs DALI commands to travel natively over a wireless or IP network, evaluate DALI+ and its stated Thread starting point rather than treating a Wireless to DALI Gateway as the same solution. The key procurement decision is not the gateway label alone; it is the complete combination of wireless ecosystem, DALI equipment, certified functions and current product availability.
