Accurate chisel work starts with a sharp edge, a clearly scored cut line, and a workpiece that cannot shift. Choose the technique to match the job: chop to remove waste, pare to refine a surface, slice a projection flush, or scrape glue and tight spots clean.
Prepare the chisel, cut line, and workpiece
A chisel with a sharp cutting edge and flat back is easier to control. The WOOD Magazine guide recommends flattening and honing chisels before use. To check sharpness, it suggests cutting into softwood end grain: a sharp edge should shave the wood and leave a smooth surface; a dull one tends to push and tear it. This is an instructional check, not a laboratory test.
Before cutting to a layout line, score it with a marking knife or gauge. A scored line helps define the edge of the cut. If you put the chisel directly into the line with its bevel toward the waste and strike down, the flat back can be driven across the line. First remove most of the waste, then approach the line with less wood resisting the bevel.
Think about grain direction before applying force. A chisel can follow the grain and split beyond the intended cut. Choose an approach that reduces the chance of a stray cut or tear-out; for a risky cross-grain cut, the guide advises finishing from the opposite direction.

Secure the workpiece before using a chisel, and keep both hands behind the cutting edge. For chopping, use solid support: a piece held only between vise jaws may shift when struck. Choose the technique for the job

Chopping: remove waste with mallet strikes
Use chopping when you need to remove more than a fine shaving, including when forming mortises or dovetails. Grip the handle securely, set the chisel to the cut, and strike with a mallet. Support the workpiece firmly over a stable bench area so it does not move under the blows.

Jeff Miller notes a preference for a plastic dead-blow mallet because it will not mar the chisel handle and can deliver plenty of force. That is his stated preference, not a comparative test of mallets.
Paring: refine a surface by hand
Paring is for controlled trimming, such as cleaning mortise walls, refining tenon shoulders or dovetails, and fitting small miters. Clamp the work rather than holding it by hand. Take light passes and remove no more than 1/32 inch at a time, as the WOOD Magazine guide recommends.

For control, align the chisel with your forearm and nest the butt of the handle in your palm. When you need more downward pressure, use a modified chopping grip, but keep the cut light and deliberate.
Slicing: trim a peg or projection flush
For a peg, dowel, or similar projection, use a paring grip and let your other hand guide a pivoting motion. Remove a small amount at a time rather than trying to take the full projection in one pass. Keep the work secured and your guiding hand clear of the edge’s path.

Scraping: clean glue and tight surfaces
Use the chisel as a scraper to clean glue or even a surface in a confined spot. Hold the blade at a low angle and apply light downward pressure; a heavy or steep cut can make the blade chatter rather than skim smoothly.
