Custom wood door styles are built from a set of decisions rather than a single catalog label. You choose the visible pattern—such as raised panels, Shaker panels, crossbuck, lites, Craftsman details, or a clean-lined contemporary face—then confirm the wood species, dimensions, glass, shape, finish, and exterior protection available for that specific product line.
The practical starting point is the opening. An interior bedroom door, an entry door exposed to weather, and a patio door may use different collections and construction rules. Treat style names as a design direction, then ask the manufacturer or authorized dealer to verify the exact size, species, glass, finish route, warranty, and lead time for your opening.

What “custom wood door style” actually covers
A style describes the door’s visual organization: the number and shape of panels, the location of glass, the profile around each panel, and decorative elements such as shelves or divided lites. Customization can also change the door’s physical specification. Documented manufacturer options include wood species, dimensions, overall shape, glass, decorative accents, and panel treatments, but the available combination depends on the collection.
Raised-panel doors
Raised panels are a traditional choice in which the center of each panel rises above the surrounding frame. The Craftsman Series interior line describes a rounded molded panel rise and offers two-, four-, five-, and six-panel layouts. This gives you a way to coordinate a single door with a hallway run or vary the panel count by room while keeping the same profile.

Shaker panels
Shaker doors use a flat center panel framed by simple, square-edged stiles and rails. Their restrained geometry works in both transitional and contemporary interiors. Some contemporary exterior models also offer optional Shaker sticking, so confirm whether the sticking option applies to the exact model rather than assuming it is universal.
Crossbuck and lite designs
Crossbuck doors place diagonal members across the face, creating a barn-inspired pattern. Lite doors use one or more glazed openings; the lites can be concentrated near the top, arranged in vertical groups, or combined with solid panels. A made-to-order interior program from Tucker Door & Trim lists Shaker, crossbuck, and lite designs and allows the opening to be specified by species, panel layout, glass, size, and finish.
Craftsman exterior doors
Craftsman entry doors commonly combine a substantial lower panel with a small glass area, divided lites, or a dentil shelf. Simpson’s Craftsman Collection lists 36 standard exterior designs and says designs can be altered. The collection documents options for species, size, glass, sidelights, transoms, and optional dentil shelves.

Contemporary doors
Contemporary exterior designs emphasize clean lines and an uncluttered face. Simpson’s Contemporary Exterior Doors examples show Douglas fir, walnut, cherry, white birch, and combinations of species. Use the examples as a visual starting point, then verify the exact species and construction offered for the model you want.
Choose the right style for the opening
Interior and exterior doors are not interchangeable specifications. Interior collections may focus on panel proportion, thickness, and finish coordination. Exterior collections must identify the exposure, weather-protection package, glazing, and warranty terms for the selected model. Patio doors can have yet another set of options.
| Opening type | Useful style directions | Details to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Interior room or passage | Raised panel, Shaker, crossbuck, or interior lites | Panel layout, thickness, species, glass, finish, and whether the line is made to order |
| Exterior entry | Craftsman, traditional panel, lite, or contemporary | Exact exposure rating, weather-protection option, glazing, sidelights or transom, finish, and warranty |
| Patio opening | Wood patio door with a panel or glazed configuration offered by the line | Interior and exterior finish routes, any aluminum-clad exterior, glass package, dimensions, and installation requirements |
The table is a planning aid, not a promise that every collection offers every combination. Product pages and dealers should confirm the final configuration.

Compare wood species by documented availability
Species availability is collection-specific. The following examples come directly from the cited product lines; they are not a ranking of durability, cost, or suitability.

| Craftsman Series interior doors | Khaya mahogany, hickory, birch, cherry, hard maple, red oak, and tulip poplar | Use the list to narrow a finish sample request; confirm which species is available for your panel layout and size. |
| Simpson contemporary exterior examples | Douglas fir, walnut, cherry, white birch, and combinations of species | Check whether a mixed-species face is offered on the selected model and whether the finish schedule supports it. |
| Tucker Door & Trim interior line | Pine, fir, alder, mahogany, red oak, white oak, walnut, cherry, and maple | Because the line is made to order, ask for a written species and panel-layout confirmation for each opening. |
| Simpson Concept Custom | Wood choice is customizable, subject to the selected design and construction | Request the available species list and any restrictions tied to size, shape, color, or warranty. |
Do not assume that a species shown in one collection can be transferred to another. Ask for a physical or controlled-light finish sample when color matching matters; a stain name alone does not establish the final appearance on every species.
Specify the panel profile, layout, and construction
Panel count and proportion
Panel count changes the visual rhythm of a door. Two large panels read differently from four narrow panels, while five- and six-panel layouts can align with existing trim or a series of adjacent doors. Record the exact layout, rail and stile widths if supplied, and whether the panel is flat, raised, or glazed.

Interior construction details
The Craftsman Series interior documentation lists a 3/4-inch veneered membrane panel and a stable engineered-wood-composite solid core, with natural North American hardwood and veneers. It lists 1-3/8-inch and 1-3/4-inch door thicknesses and standard heights from 6 feet 8 inches to 8 feet. These are collection-specific specifications, not universal properties of all solid-wood doors.
Custom shape and scale
Simpson’s Concept Custom program documents choices in wood, glass, dimensions, shape, decorative accents, and panel treatments for interior and exterior use. Its stated maximum is 8 feet wide and 10 feet tall. A dark-colored Concept Custom door must use Nantucket Collection construction with Accoya wood to meet that program’s warranty requirement. That is a manufacturer rule for this product, not a general rule for wood doors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPlan glass, privacy, and daylight together
Glass placement is one of the most consequential style decisions. A narrow vertical lite, a row of small divided lites, and a broad clear panel produce different views and privacy levels. Put the glass decision in the same specification as the panel layout: identify the number and arrangement of lites, the intended transparency or privacy level, and whether the glass is available in the chosen door size.

For an entry, also identify sidelights or a transom if the opening includes them. The Craftsman Collection lists both as options. Do not infer glass performance, security, fire rating, or energy performance from a style photograph; those characteristics require the exact glazing and product documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a finish route and exterior protection
Factory-finished, primed, or unfinished
Pella’s pages on wood patio door finishes and wood front-door finishes describe factory-finished, primed, and unfinished routes on selected products. Paint or stain customization is available for the applicable unfinished or primed options. Confirm which route applies to your line, who performs the finishing, and what preparation or maintenance the manufacturer requires.
Cladding and weather exposure
On selected wood patio doors, Pella describes aluminum-clad exteriors as helping resist fading and chalking. That feature is line-specific; it should not be generalized to every wood door. For any exterior door, ask for the exact weather-protection construction, approved finish, exposure limitations, and maintenance schedule.

Simpson says Craftsman Collection doors come standard with UltraBlock technology backed by a five-year warranty, while WaterBarrier is available for most, but not all, designs. Confirm model eligibility and the current warranty terms with an authorized dealer before treating either option as part of your order.
A practical specification workflow
- Measure the opening. Record rough-opening dimensions, finished frame size, wall thickness, swing, handing, and the clearance available for trim. Have the dealer verify the field measurements before fabrication.
- Classify the exposure. State whether the door is interior, sheltered exterior, fully exposed entry, or patio. This determines which product lines and protection packages are relevant.
- Select the visual pattern. Choose raised panel, Shaker, crossbuck, lite, Craftsman, contemporary, or a custom combination. Include a sketch or marked-up elevation showing panel and glass locations.
- Choose the species. Select from the species offered by that collection, not from a general wood list. Request samples if the door must coordinate with flooring, cabinetry, or existing trim.
- Set dimensions and shape. Confirm height, width, thickness, radius or other non-rectangular geometry, and whether the collection permits the requested size. For Concept Custom, compare the request with the stated 8-foot width and 10-foot height maximum.
- Define glass and accessories. Specify lite arrangement, privacy intent, sidelights, transom, dentil shelf, and any decorative accents. Obtain the exact glass description rather than relying on a photograph.
- Choose the finish route. Select factory finish, primed, or unfinished where offered. State stain or paint color, sheen, and which surfaces receive the finish.
- Request the written submittal. The final document should show elevation, dimensions, handing, species, panel treatment, glass, finish, protection package, warranty, and any exclusions. Approve it before production.
Comparison checklist for quotes
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the quoted style an interior or exterior product? | Collections, construction, finishing, and protection options differ by application. |
| Which species and panel treatment are included? | A pictured species or profile may not be available on the chosen model. |
| What are the exact dimensions and tolerances? | Custom limits and standard sizes vary by line. |
| What glass, privacy level, and accessories are specified? | Lite layout, sidelights, and transoms change both appearance and the opening configuration. |
| Who finishes the door and what is covered? | Factory, dealer, and site-applied finishes have different responsibilities and warranty conditions. |
| Which protection technology and warranty apply? | Features such as UltraBlock or WaterBarrier are model-specific, and warranty language controls the actual coverage. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Ordering by style name alone: “Craftsman” or “Shaker” does not identify species, glass, thickness, or weather package. Attach an elevation and complete specification.
- Assuming every species is interchangeable: Species lists differ by collection. Obtain written confirmation for the exact model.
- Using an interior specification outside: Interior panel construction and finish choices do not establish exterior suitability. Start with an exterior-rated line for an exposed opening.
- Ignoring dark-finish rules: The Concept Custom requirement for Nantucket Collection construction with Accoya wood applies when its warranty condition for dark-colored doors is invoked. Ask how your selected color is classified.
- Approving from a screen image: Photography does not establish grain, stain color, glass privacy, or final proportions. Review samples and the approved elevation.
- Assuming a listed option is universal: Published pages describe particular collections. Verify availability, warranty, dimensions, and lead time with the manufacturer or dealer for your project.
Build a complete door schedule
For each opening, create one line in a door schedule with the room or elevation, interior or exterior use, handing, rough and finished dimensions, thickness, style and panel count, species, glass arrangement, sidelights or transom, finish route and color, protection package, and approved manufacturer model. Add the dealer’s written confirmation of warranty terms and any collection-specific limits. This schedule prevents a visually correct style from arriving with the wrong size, finish route, or exposure specification.
The best custom wood door is therefore the one whose visible style and written construction agree. Start with the pattern you want, but approve the species, dimensions, glass, finish, and protection as a single, model-specific specification.
